Basically, the importance of this gas law is that increasing the temperature of a
gas causes its pressure to rise proportionally (assuming the volume doesn't
change. Similarly, decreasing the temperature causes pressure to fall
proportionally.
Simplified, this means that if you increase the temperature of a gas, the pressure rises
proportionally. Pressure and temperature will both increase or decrease simultaneously as long
as the volume is held constant.

This law holds true because temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of a
substance; when the kinetic energy of a gas increases, its particles collide with the container
walls more rapidly and exert more pressure.

What makes them true? We can make brief reference to the ideas of kinetic-molecular
theory (KMT), which Gay-Lussac did not have access to in the early 1800's. KMT
was developed in its modern form about 50 years later.

1) Suppose the temperature is increased. This means gas molecules will move faster
and they will impact the container walls more often. This means the gas pressure
inside the container will increase, since the container has rigid walls (volume stays
constant).

2) Suppose the temperature is decreased. This means gas molecules will move slower
and they will impact the container walls less often. This means the gas pressure inside
the container will decrease, since the container has rigid walls (volume stays
constant).
Gay Lussac’s Law in Real Life:
Gay Lussac’s law has a wide range of applications in our daily life. Some of the common
examples are given below:

 A burning automobile tire: Burning rubber will cause the increase in the air pressure in the
tire due to increased temperature. This may lead to explosion of tire wall.
 Firing a bullet: Gay Lussac’s law can be applied in firing a bullet. Here, the ignition of
gunpowder generates a superheated gas which in turn increases the pressure so that the
bullet travels longer with high speed.

 Heating a closed aerosol can: When you burn aerosol cans like spray paint and
deodorants, the increased temperature can increase the pressure which may cause the
explosion of the container. This is why there is warning on the deodorant bottles ‘not to put
even empty bottles in fire’.

 Heating food in an oven: When you keep food in an oven for heating, the air inside the
oven is heated, thus pressurized.
