Beginning of the Lesson:

Present a video clip from the movie James and the Giant Peach that covers the first chapter
to the class.
Middle of the Lesson:
After watching the video clip, ask the students to identify the main idea of the scene that
they just watched. Address the class and ask the students the above questions. Call on two
different individuals per question because no two answers should be exactly the same. Ask
the rest of the class if there is anything else that the other students miss and give them an
opportunity to add any additional details or key points. After each question, go over
additional information that the students did not identify if applicable. Divide the class into
groups of three and assign each group a chapter to act out. The students need to include the
main idea and supporting details during their performance. The students should express the
feelings of the characters through their body language and tone of voice. Oversee and go
around the room to each group as they are working in order to see the progress they are
making on the task and provide additional support and feedback.
End of the Lesson:
Students will act out the main idea of their chapter to the rest of the class to demonstrate
their understanding of main ideas and character development. As the students perform their scene,
go over the checklist attached to the end of the lesson plan in order to access their knowledge and
understanding of the concepts.

Accommodation/Modification for ESOL:

For students who do not speak English, audio books will be provided so the students can
hear the correct pronunciation of the words. Closed captioning will be provided on the
video clip for Spanish speaking students.
Accommodation/Modification for ASD/SLD:
For students with ADD, set a timer to remind the child it is time to end the activity and
begin another. The timer will provide a warning before time expires. Students that need it
will be given a tablet with headphones and access to the video clip that was shown to refer
back to the content that was shown on the projector.
