Various types of organization structures

1. FUNCTIONAL structure
Members with similar skills are grouped together into functional departments.
in business, government agencies, banks, hospitals, NGO.
2. DIVISIONAL structure
Members who are grouped together work on the same product, service, process, or serve
similar customers. Ex. Corporations
3. MATRIX structure
Combines the functional and divisional structures.
Specialist from specific functional departments are assigned to work on one or more
interdisciplinary teams.
4. TEAM structure
Created to complete special projects, to solve problems, or to accomplish daily tasks.
“special task forces”
Ex: Creation of Quality Improvement Team
5. NETWORK structure
Formed by having a core of full-time employees working together with outside partners who
provide support or supply services.
*3 Forms of Network Structure
Task force – formed on temporary basis to accomplish a complex task.
Committee – composed of selected members from different backgrounds. Ex. LGU
Collegial form – composed of members from professional backgrounds. Ex. Universities
6. VIRTUAL structure
Eliminates the boundaries among units that compose the organization by using IT and the
internet to communicate with members.
