INTRODUCTION
Film industry in world was first developed in United States around 90 years ago. From
the good old days of Black & White silent era the glitter and glamour of the silver screen
have attracted youths into films and later on into television industry as well. Film &
Television industry both are getting organized day by day. Many Film Institutes and
school have been opened in different cities of world. India is one of the largest film
producing countries in the world. During 1950, government of India set up a file enquiry
committee to survey the film scene in the country and submit a report. The committee
stated that the Indian film industry has achieved remarkable growth since its early
beginning in 1913 and some of its films compared most favorably with the best in the
world.
The Indian Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry has been one of the fastest
growing in recent times; it stood at INR 584 billion in 2008, a growth of 12.4% over the
previous year. By 2013, the industry is projected to reach the size of INR 1052 billion.
Moreover, by expanding into new geographies and embracing multiple platforms, Indian
promoters are now attracting foreign media companies and investors too.
Film has emerged as one of the most influential art form of our age. As there are great
books, now there are great film. Film making is a complete team effort which involve
many aspects.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT
Film & Television industry both are getting organized day by day. Many Film Institutes and
school have been opened in different cities of world. “FILM INSTITUTE” as described by its
name is a multi functional complex. It comprises of number of activities like acting studios,
sound recording and music studios, indoor and outdoor sets, etc. which makes it an elegant
example of self contained and self-sufficient complex. Chandigarh is one of the fastest growing
cities of India and because of its beautiful scenic background of Shivalik hills. Film institute
would be a great hub for youth and the upcoming industry and would provide more career
options to the people.
The ambience components such as location, zoning, acoustics, lighting and ventilation,
etc., are to be properly understood for each and every function.
LIMITATIONS
The thesis will cover only the designing and planning of institutional area which includes
different departments, computer labs, acting halls, auditorium, conference hall, film and
text library, cafeteria, indoor and outdoor sets, etc. The thesis will offer the architectural
details only and not the technical engineering details.
REQUIREMENTS
Academic block.

2. Department of cinematography.

4. Department of sound recording and design.
5. Department of producing for film and television.
6. Department of animation cinema.

SITE
The proposed site of film institute is located in the film city proposed at sarangpur
Village which lies at the middle of the Chandigarh city and recently proposed
Chandigarh extension. The site is approximately 7kms from the main city sector 17.
Immediate neighborhood of film city and the city Chandigarh, nearness to the
amusement park and education park and the location on the main road, makes it
coherent setting, for the subject.
LAND USE
The site shall be developed and buildings constructed therein should be as
follows:
Film city - 20acres
Film Institute - 10.22 acres
Entertainment Center - 6.06acres
Multimedia Park - 8acres
