Jessica Soho, perhaps the most popular broadcaster in the Philippine news media today, was the first Filipino
to win in the New York Film Festival for Coverage of a Breaking Story. The coverage which made her win was
her account of a hostage crisis in Cagayan Valley. She got her start in broadcasting as a voice-over news
reporter in GMA Network when she was just fresh from college. Jessica never dreamed of becoming a
broadcast journalist. Her ambition was to become a lawyer. When she entered the University of the Philippines
in 1981, she enrolled in Political Science but it was the fear of math that led Jessica Soho astray. At the U.P.
College of Mass Communications, Jessica met the late journalist Luis Beltran who regaled students with tales
of adventures. Beltran inspired Jessica to finish Mass Communications. Jessica has also received the much-
coveted George Foster Peabody Award for her documentaries on the underground "kidney-for-sale" business
and death sport "kamao". Noted for her quick wit and trenchant commentary, her name became synonymous
with shows in GMA Network such Brigada and State of the Nation. During a keynote speech at the University
of the Philippines Cebu last year, Jessica was quoted saying, “My personal theory, although this may not be
original—I think the universe is not without walls. Whatever you bounce off it will always come back to you.
Karma for Buddhists and Hindus; the Golden Rule for Catholics.”

8. What is the purpose of this announcement?
