Introduction
This document outlines the proposed training for the X-Rite i1 Process Control solution which is provided with the
imagePRESS Colour range of devices.
The aim of this document is to provide the user with a step-by-step process to using the i1 Process Control
software and all of it’s features.
The i1 Process Control system provides colour management and verification for Canon imagePRESS devices, using
LAB and spectral formats. This system allows you to:
• Profile Canon imagePRESS Devices to ensure that the product prints colour reliably and to the expectations of
the customer
• Evaluate imagePRESS print device performance over time ensuring that it prints to customer expectations
• Create libraries of spot colours, and generate simulation recipes for use in DTP applications and your Canon
RIP.
The process control solution is based on both X-Rite/GretagMacbeth software and hardware components, with the
newest printer generation from Canon called ‘imagePRESS’.
Although the software part of the solution needs to include very advanced profiling features, verification and
optimisation algorithms, the main goal for the solution is to provide an easy and intuitive application that the user
will want to work with on a daily basis without any causing any frustration or problems.
This solution shall emphasize the important role of Canon’s new printer generation in the Pre-Press markets to
deliver consistent colour and extremely reliable digital proofs. In order to meet this goal, the solution will provide
the following important fundamental areas:
• Monitor
• Printer (CMYK)
The software is navigated by using the menu items at the top of the window:
NOTE: All of the settings outlined in this document are correct at the time of writing. Please note that the settings may
change if there are system or firmware updates on the devices and controllers.

31
When all of the patches have been measured you will be shown
the 'Save Profile' window to select the desired Seperation settings
for your profile and then click 'Save' to create your profile
32
Re-building an ICC Profile
If you would like to create a new profile with different seperation settings for media you have already created a profile
for, you do not have to print another set of patch charts and measure them.
You can open a previously created profile and use the measurement data contained within, all you will have to do is
change the seperation settings as you require. *It is important that the profile you open is based on the same media
and output device as the new one you wish to create.
i.e. if you have a profile for the Canon 100 GSM paper and it is using a CMYK limit of 250 and you want to create
another one with a CMYK limit of 270
1
In the Process Control software go to ‘File -> Rebuild Profile’
You will be prompted to browse for the profile you would like
2
to open, select the profile and click ‘OK’
You will then be shown the ‘Save Profile’ window where you
3
can change the seperation settings for use in the new profile.
When you have set the seperation setting you should then
4 click the ‘Neutralize’ button. This will neutralize the CMYK
grey and then click ‘Save’
33
Choose the location to save the ICC Profile, the default
location is: PC: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
5
Mac: Library\Colorsync\Profiles
name the profile and click 'Save'
34
Uploading the Profile to Command workstation
When you have created your Media profile you will need to upload it to the EFi controller so it can be used in your
workflow.
This is done via Profile Manager in Colorwise tools which you can access via Command Workstation
Here you can set the name of how the profile will appear in
the list of output profiles
5
It Is very Important to assign the Media setting for the profile
i.e. 1 sided coated, etc
35
6 The profile is then listed in the 'Output' profile list
The profile can now be set as the 'Output' Profile in the Color

36
ImagePRESS Server Color Setup for FOGRA Verification
The Process Control software will allow a user to check if their device is able to simulate printing of the FOGRA standards.
Please Note:
If you work in a colour critical environment and want to simulate and compare the output against FOGRA Standards,
there are certain elements you need to consider that will affect the Verification Checks and results:
• Media must match the FOGRA Standards. If the media white point or specification is not within the FOGRA
Standard, the validation check will measure this and is likely to show failures on certain patches. This is the
most critical part of validation when trying to achieve a close comparison with the standard. For media that
does not match FOGRA standards, if the white point is brighter, Absolute Colorimetric rendering can be set in
the RIP. Make sure to turn on “paper simulation”.
• The correct simulation profiles need to be installed on the EFI Controller (Europe ISO Coated FOGRA 27, ISO
(Un) Coated and GCR set to source).
• An output profile that is within the FOGRA Tolerance needs to be created on the print device.
• Once the Simulation and Output profiles are set, the Advanced Printer Settings (Expert) need to be configured
so that it matches the requirements of the End User workflow.
In addition to the above, there are also considerations for the Print Engine that will impact the verification checks:
The i1 Process Control tool is designed to allow measurement and comparison against the FOGRA Standard or to create
output profiles. There are no guarantees the FOGRA Verification will pass every time, but following the guidelines above
should allow close comparisons with positive results.
Fogra27 – using EuropeISOCoatedFOGRA27.Icc as the CMYK simulation (please note Fogra27 has been replaced as a
standard with Fogra39)
Fogra39 – Using ISOCoated_v2_eci.icc as the CMYK simulation
This Verification has to be carried out on specific media that uses a white point that conforms to the relevant Fogra
standard, or use the Paper Simulation option in Color Setup which is outlined in next section of this document.
Before Carrying out this process you must create an output profile on the media required for this Verification
Also please note that if the verification is successful it does not mean the device you are working on is Fogra
Certified, it just means that you can simulate the Fogra standard you have selected.
37
Printing the wedge for FOGRA Verification
1 For a default install of i1 Process Control the wedge can be found in the following location:
PC: C:\Program Files\i1 Process Control v2.0\Targets\Fogra Media Wedge

Correct Profile Function - New Feature!!
Profile Correction can be used in the proofing (FOGRA) workflow. Over time, the output of any printing device can
drift for a number of reasons, including calibration or variation in paper or environmental conditions. When the
measured output of the printer stops verifying successfully in a simulation workflow, i1 Process Control can update
the output profile to correct for normal drift and update the profile to the new output conditions. This workflow can
reduce the time required to maintain accurate profiles in your daily workflow.
Before carrying out the 'Correct Profile' process you must print the media wedge using the CMYK simulation
1 settings you are trying to verify against (please refer to the relevant section of this document for information on
printing the media wedge)
If you are correcting a profile due to drift, you need to print the media wedge using the same custom output
2
profile and print settings you used when you previously had a successful verification
5 Output Profile - the custom profile you are using for output
Source - your simulation profile you have selected on the
controller.
6 Click 'Save'
8 You should use the new profile as your output on the controller and re-print the wedge and measure again.
42
Alternative Color Setup for FOGRA Verification using 'Paper Simulation'
If the user wants to verify if their device can simulate the FOGRA 27 or FOGRA 39 standard but they do not have the
correct media they can 'Simulate' the paper white. This process can be carried out on any type of paper as long as the
user has created an output profile for it and uploaded it into Command Workstation via 'Profile Manager'.
The user would print the Fogra Media Wedge to the 'Hold' queue in the same way out outlined in the above section but
the main change in this test is the Color Setup workflow in 'Command Workstation'.
With the job in the Command Workstation 'Hold' queue the user would right-click the job and select 'Properties'.
In the Color Workflow set-up make sure the option for ‘Paper Simulation’ is ticked
3
*The paper simulation option is only available when the color set-up is accessed via the print job properties
43
In the job properties you need to make sure you have the
correct settings under the Media tab.

The library will build and show the original color (top)
and the color based on the output profile you have
selected (bottom)
After building the library you can also see the CMYK
make up of the updated color.
46
Editing colours In your Palettes
You are then presented with the 'Edit Patch' window. you can
2 edit the colour by adding or removing CMYK, when you have
made any changes you would like click 'OK'
47
Creating Custom color libraries
You can create custom palettes for use within Adobe Photoshop and Spot-On.
48
6
Then the 'Library Manager' window will open
1 - Click the 'Add' button (use this if you know the Lab values
7 of the colours you would like to use)
2 - Measure the color with your Eye-One
Input the information for the Name of the colour and then
8
input the Lab information as required.
