Hello Everyone!
The Watson’s Go to
Birmingham - 1963 Thank you so much to all of you who were able to make it to the
poetry café last Friday! The students had so much fun sharing their poetry
with you. They did an incredible job! This week in writing we are
transitioning to our next unit: “Writing for Justice”. In this persuasive writing
Writing unit, students will select a social or environmental justice issue they are
- Writing for Justice: passionate about. The students will take a position on their topic and will
Persuasive Writing support their claim with evidence from a variety of credible sources. This
unit allows students the opportunity to conduct research on their topics
o Pre-write activities and to share ideas with one another in order to come up with local and
o Topic Selection global solutions to their selected issue.
Last week in science the students continued to work with their
team to use the engineering/design process to construct their own
Math windmills. Each team has created their first prototype and is beginning the
- Module 4: Geometry Unit testing process. We are learning that often times it takes many failures and
adjustments before you are successful. The teams have done a fabulous
job learning from their mistakes and making changes to their prototypes to
Social Studies better their design. This week we will continue the testing process for
prototype #1 and the groups will begin the construction and testing of
- Black History Month their second prototype. Last year the class record for the number of cubes
- Class businesses lifted by a windmill was 36. This year’s groups are working hard to break
the record!
On Wednesday the class will take the mid-module assessment for
Science our geometry unit. This assessment will determine the students’ ability to
- Engineering and Design identify different types of lines, measure angles, and use addition and
subtraction to determine missing angles. This week we will be learning how
o Windmill Lab to classify different types of triangles using vocabulary such as: right,
acute, obtuse, equilateral, isosceles, and scalene.
So far about 2/3 of the class has signed up for a parent/teacher
conference on March 7th or 8th. If you have not already done so, please
sign up for a conference time slot. The sign up link is on the Jacob Wismer
website. I hope to get a chance to meet with everyone!
