Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S1L1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals.
a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and flower. b. Ask questions to compare
the basic needs of plants (air, water, light, and nutrients) and animals (air, water, food, and shelter). c. Design
a solution to ensure that a plant or animal has all its needs met.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Knowledge Constructor
Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:
Kids Gardening.org Helping Young Children Grow
URL(s) to support the lesson: https://kidsgardening.org/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
This project would be incorporated into the classroom during the student or plants and animals. Students will
label parts of a plant. Students could make observations about how plants grow and what they need to grow.
They could also create a small garden outside, on school grounds. By creating a hands-on activity, this could
take the learning process to a high level of thinking.
During this time, the students could keep a journal and antinodes about the process. This activity is
something that we can made into a year long class project. During the winter, students could examine why
plants died, and what they are missing to stay alive and grow. Kids gardens a great opportunity for learning
about plants and growing food.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students can use camera to photography progress of plants. Kids garden website to gather information on
gardening.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high Loti Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be collaborating with peer in classroom and well as other students from different
school through a blog on website.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products because of engaging in a project): Student will create school garden and journal about
experience. Each student will keep a log of the entire process throughout the year.

c. Higher-order thinking: Provide books, gardening news, and webinars on gardening. Student will design
and create garden area.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: This site
spotlight different programs and their achievement is gardening.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Audio tapes and books will be provided. Students in wheelchairs will be
able to plant and garden with rest of students.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: I would address Internet Safety by providing
students will internet names, getting permission from parents and school. Photos only if parents agree.

Reflective Practice:
This activity will get students to think about what living things around us need to grow and survive. Also,
teach students about growing and planting food. How we depend on other things in the world to survive.
Students will use other site, like Discover Education for research and for creating Boards to share to family
and friends. This project can be a year long learning lesson for the students.
