Opening Statement

When I was in elementary school, physical education class was the best since we had a

chance to find out who was the faster or slower runner. I was an overly hyperactive kid so I

looked forward to Physical education most out of all my classes. I hated to stay seated in my

classes and as a result, my arithmetic and literature teachers would yell at me to stay at my desk.

When I started the fifth grade, Coach Deeds noticed my excessive energy and he would have me

do jumping jacks to help bring my energy level down. I learned in time that physical activity

helps keep me balanced. Physical education is essential for social and motor training for most

students. I feel a properly run physical education program would help lead students into a healthy

lifestyle through childhood and into older age.

The Physical Education Chair is a person whom has to make sure everything is running

smoothly within their department. They schedule courses, hire and supervise instructors, ensure

the availability of equipment, supplies, and space for academic courses, manage the PE academic

budget, and attend meetings of academic departments chairs. And they would be committed to

the highest level of excellence, the integration of the academic and athletic experience of

students (College, 2018).

I feel the purpose of organization an administration guide is to set a proper plan to

improve the organization, staffing, leadership, and appropriate monitoring of our physical

education programs. I would make random class observation so my faculty members would

realize how important it is to ensure that my programs run like clockwork, and that students are

learning what they need to, according to state standards. When holding observations, I would

make sure to provide employees with constructive feedback that will help to improve
CAREER GUIDE 4

performance, as well as teacher-student relationships. I feel one of the main objectives, as

department chair is to ensure that the physical education programs within our schools are

providing a safe learning environment. According to Tellus4 survey, 21% of pupils (in ages 6-

10) had said, they did something active everyday during class time, 74% active some or most

days, and 5% were not active during lesson time (Chamberlain, Golden, Walker, & Benton,

2010).

Leading Organizations

Becoming a leader requires that you actually understand your fellow co-workers. You

must be ready to practice the qualities of the best leader and promote equality within your

department. 44% of department chairs primarily identify with faculty roles, 52% see themselves

as both faculty members and administrators, and only 4% see themselves primarily as

administrators. I feel to be a good instructor you must be ready to promote the Golden rule

within your classroom with your students and instructors. I would be the type of leader whom

everyone would look up too and wants to be like from my action. I think having an open door

policy would help my constituents come talk to me freely about any concerns with their jobs.

One the responsibilities of a chair would be to develop and manage the annual operating

budget for the department of physical education (Sawyer, 2012). Many schools will come under

some type of financial issues so you will need to be ready to step up to the plate for your peers. I

would make sure I try to keep my employees on staff so I could help allocate the funds keep

from cutting any staffs or programs. Every department would have some input in the everyday

problems that may or may not arise on a given semester. Three professional organizations for

Kinesiology: SHAPE America, Wisconsin Health and Physical Education and National Strength

& Conditioning Association (America, 2012).

Management is an organizational function like sales, marketing, or finance. It's the act of

getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives efficiently and effectively

(Sawyer, 2012). The sad thing about Physical education teachers is that they are evaluated based

on how students behave in their classes. When a class is well managed and the students work in

sync with one another therefore, bringing credibility to the program.

Management functions include:

CAREER GUIDE 6

 Planning includes both the broadest view of the organization (mission) and the narrowest

(tactic for accomplishing a specific goal). To be a prepared as a P.E. instructor you would

learn its best to be prepared for a class in which, you are well prepared for anything that

may or may not come up as conflicts within the class. You must always make sure that

you have more than enough extras in equipment for an activity.

o Vision is a nonspecific directional and motivational guidance for the entire

organization. It gives you a purpose for each lesson plan

o Mission is an organization’s reason for being and it reflects the culture and values

of top management.

o Goals are specific statements of anticipated results that further define the

organization’s objectives. (SMART-Specific, Measureable, Attainable,

Rewarding, and Time)

o Objectives are the mission and address key issues within the organization.

o Development of action strategies describes who, what, when, where, and how

activities will take place to accomplish a goal (Sawyer, 2012).

 Organizing is defined as establishing the internal organizational structure of the business.

It is when a manager distributes responsibility and authority to jobholders in this function

of management (Sawyer, 2012). A quality physical education program would be

organized around the content standards that would offer direction and continuity to help

instruct and evaluate the students. We want help all students become competence in their

desired activity in the class (Sawyer, 2012).

 Staffing is filling and keeping filled with qualified people all positions in the business.

Recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and compensating are specific activities (Sawyer,
CAREER GUIDE 7

2012). A Physical education teacher’s main objectives are to help make sure students are

performing the activity with proper technique, and as a result prevent any injuries from

the activity in class.

 Directing and Leading are influencing people’s behavior through motivation,

communication, group dynamics, leaderships, and discipline (Sawyer, 2012). Physical

education could help non-athletic students become better and more social people by

incorporating a buddy system with the gifted athletic students. Students skilled and

blessed with innate ability have many opportunities to learn. P.E. is the last opportunity

students would have to learn skills in caring and positive environment (Sawyer, 2012).

 Controlling and Monitoring is a four-step process of establishing performance standards

based on the firm’s objectives, measuring and reporting actual performance, comparing

the two, and taking corrective or preventive action as necessary (Sawyer, 2012). In

physical education and other teaching classes, you are taught the process of collecting

and interpreting information about the acquired knowledge, experiences, skills, attitudes

and behavior of learners as they interact in a class/gym (Sawyer, 2012).

The management theory that best describes my style would be Decision theory. It is the

act of choosing between two or more alternatives and involves identifying alternatives and

selecting the one judged best. I usually try to weigh all my options when dealing with issues

with my subordinates at work. I always try to be certain that I’m making the right decision by

asking my peers what their sentiments are on the issues at hand. And I want to be able to show

my employees that I lead with a certain degree of consistency and stability over time within my

organization. And three kinesiology/career professional organizations that I would recommend

to my students to help on their journey in a kinesiology career are: CSKLS (Christian Society for

Ethics and Biblical Principles

Ethics is defined as something that promotes good behaviors and morals. It also addresses

what to do about unethical and bad behavior (Sawyer, 2012). To teach well in ethics, it is

required that teachers have a good character, are familiar with ethical concepts, and have an

interest in moral reflection (Fain, 1990). I believe if you walk with honesty within your

organization it will help keep staff motivated and keep them around for a full tenure. The ethics

and values of a good chairperson will help guide the way they hire and fire people within their

department. You want to keep children and co-worker safe from mental and emotional harm

from the heartaches of day-to-day issues at the school. I remember reading in the Maxwell

leadership Bible, “Good leaders motivate others by their listening skills. We are to: avoid

prejudicial first impressions; become less self-centered; withhold initial criticism; stay calm;

listen with empathy; be active listeners; clarify what we hear; and recognize the healing power of

listening. Then we are to act on what we hear” (Maxwell, 2014).

When it comes to ethics the bible talks a lot about how one should live. The base

scripture is 2 Timothy 3: 10-15:

10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith,

long suffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at

Antioch, at I conium, at Lustra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the

Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer

persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and

being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been

assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you
CAREER GUIDE 10

have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through

faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (BibleGateway, 1990)

You learn in life that when you follow the word of God it holds you close in your bad

times, in your greatest achievements, and even when no one else is around to accept you. The

scripture states that we learn from a young age how to deal with all types of personalities, both

positive and negative. We each personally have to choose right from wrong in our journey. A

good leader would be open-mind about all beliefs, whether religious or cultural, and so the moral

fiber of their team would always be in harmony. I would have my applicants have an assessment

of a personality test so I can make sure that I’m forming the perfect team together for my

students.

Planning

Accordingly to Sawyer, planning is the process of making plans for something. Having a

good plan in place requires setting a realistic and attainable goal and knowing what you want to

accomplish with time, money, and staff (Sawyer, 2012). When you are thinking of planning, you

need to consider several different areas. The department needs to plan for things such as policy,

procedure, rules, budget, and staffing. These are key concepts that will be needed to help have a

smoothly running department. Policies, procedures, and rules help keep your employees on task

and in order. I believe an effective lesson will get the students thinking and it will allow them to

interact, ask questions, tap into their background knowledge, and build new skills (Ullman,

2011). I found the SWOT analysis to be a great guide for implementing a program to assist with

each person’s strengths and increasing opportunities for team building. We could learn from each

other’s weaknesses to make us stronger as a team, and having an action plan will help when

anything negative happens unexpectedly in our future.

I would set my standards to promote teaching physical skills and lifetime activities that

would encourage social interaction and physical and mental well being through intramural games

and physical education. Standards 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of

physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/ or social interaction.

(America, 2012). And the goal of my program would be to encourage students to develop a

healthy lifestyle in/out the classroom. Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates

competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns (America, 2012). My school

would try to bring the community together by providing diverse educational and recreational

activities and after school programs. I would implement a new budgeting and expense tracking

mechanism that would permit accurate and multi-dimensional analysis of all accounts across our

department.
CAREER GUIDE 13

Organizing (programming)

To set proper goals for your class you must plan at least a day ahead of time to keep

yourself well organized. You must make sure that you improve instructional delivery and

management because you want to be sure the material taught to the classes is conductive to the

long-term learning of the children. I would start a program were the students could walk on

treadmills during class or have exercise breaks during class. It would create a fun and effective

learning environment for the teachers and students (Stolzfus, 2016).

I would also make sure my instructors are current with the latest trends in the health and

fitness industry. When I was working at LA fitness as a personal trainer we were required to

attend at least one ASAHPERD conference. ASAHPERD is an organization that promotes

healthy lifestyles. It will ensure that our students will leave our schools with an appreciation for

health and wellness.

Programming by external requirements or standards. The standards of Health and

Education are what give us the blueprint for what our students should be learning in a physical

education class. The standards generally represent minimum: therefore, to exceed the standards

would indicate higher quality in the program experience. My earlier experience with physical

education was zany, since my coach would make us wrestle each other to pass class time. He

would not watch us but he would bark criticism at us all the time. My goal would be to model

my classes from Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) and National Alliance for

Youth Sports (NAYS). I would set up my program by desire of participants in which, my staff

would be able to understand which activities would help my students better. And this type of

diversity would help embrace a variety of skills levels relating to both noncompetitive to highly

competitive activities (Sawyer, 2012). I want my students with learning disabilities to feel
CAREER GUIDE 14

comfortable in my different physical education class in my district. Standard 3: Education

through the effective use of resources, accommodations and/or modifications, technology and

metacognitive strategies to address the diverse needs of all students (America, 2012).

My goal is to have inclusion within the classroom by ensuring that all learners reach

common standards by integrating students with disabilities into a general education classroom.

The lesson plan would be adjusted for my all non-English speakers, visually impaired, and ADD

students, and students with disabilities. I would start an international fitness seminar for my

students with different cultures since physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth leading

risk factor for global mortality causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally. It would give

the diverse students a chance to be sociable with their peers. We would learn about the different

types of recreational activities from the many different countries. Soccer (or football) commands

the passion for most Latin American people in Mexico. It's a game in which two teams of eleven

players, using any parts of the bodies except their hands and arms, to maneuver the ball into the

opposing team’s goal (Palern, et al., 2018). Cricket is a popular sport that is played throughout

the world including in Australia, India, Pakistan, and the West Indies, and British Isles. It is

played with a bat and ball and involved two competing sides teams of 11 players (Alston,

Williams, & Longmore, 2017). And these are just a couple the games we would have on display

at the international fitness seminar. We will make informational videos on the current health

trends and resources available to people in the community. For example, we could use something

similar to the obesity prevention video I produced at https://youtu.be/UV96-CoQO9w in order to

help our community to grow beyond this issue, especially in our lower economic neighborhoods.

Controlling

It would require many factors to help keep the departments to run smoothly as one.

Controlling leads to identification of new problems that in turn need to be addressed through

establishing performance standards (Sawyer, 2012). We would have maintenance checklist for

the equipment, and as a result, we would reduce the number of accidental injuries in class. A

coach providing exercise services needs to understand the legal risks attendant to facilities and

equipment as well as to the operating policies and procedures utilized for various clienteles

(Sawyer, 2012). I would have the legal liability as a department chair to make sure all my

teachers and students are monitored with the utmost safety in mind. Negligence and problems

are a major concern in any field that has to do with physical activity with our children. Injuries

can often occur from negligent behavior and can result in legal actions being taken (Sawyer,

2012). I would make sure that each parent and students knows the risks of participating in any

physical activity through a power point presentation on the day of orientation of first day class.

Fiscal management is a career field that handles finances. You have to effectively

manage funds in such a manner as to accomplish the objectives of the organization for your

school (Sawyer, 2012). We had gotten a sponsorship from our community bank to help with our

funds for better equipment for our football team. I have a schedule draw up for car washes,

candy sales, and lawnmower service for extra money. The math clubs have decided to charge for

tutoring outside school district students to help with our fundraiser for new equipment. We are a

new school starting out with the bare minimal of equipment for our Physical education

department. And I wanted to try to get my staff some clipboards so; they would not be walking

around with falling papers everywhere during their presentation to the class. Our high school has

three obese and malnourish students from broken homes and homeless shelters. And the sad
CAREER GUIDE 18

thing is that a couple of these students have a high blood pressure, heart murmurs, and

hypertrophic cardiomyopathy issues. As a result, I wanted to have multiple AED units

throughout the school so, if any of my students need resuscitation from any complications during

class. I feel new uniforms would help with moral within the classes. Since most of the less

financial able students usually get ridicule by the other students for wearing the same cloths

everyday for class. I feel the new uniforms would help with cohesion within the class. In

additionally, we are in the process of putting a track & field team together for the incoming

season. Since most of our equipment is rusty and falling apart at the moment. I want to keep any

risk management low for the students. (see Appendix D)

CAREER GUIDE 19

Concluding Thoughts

My department would be organized in hiring the best candidates for the positions in our

district. We would have each new hire take a personality test and be an honest person. We would

look for many characteristics in potential new employees, but most importantly we would look

for someone with a proficient knowledge of material that will be taught, the ability to take

initiative when appropriate, strong leadership qualities, a passion for education, and morals and

values that are similar to that of our own instructors. Our goal as instructors would be to inspire

the best person possible within the hearts of our students. And lead by example with harmony

interactions with co-workers and students. (See Appendix E)
