POSTTEST-ONLY CONTROL GROUP DESIGN

This type of study:

 uses existing groups who have and have not received treatment or who have
received two different kinds of treatment.
 is done when only posttest measures are available. (A posttest is any measure done
after treatment.)
 is most successful when number of subjects is large.
The investigator must identify the presence of confounding factors in the experimental
and control groups, such as weight and age.

Strengths
 Control group provides some means of comparison
 This type of study can be used to refine hypotheses for further testing.
 If subjects are randomly assigned to groups (i.e., groups are truly equivalent), this
kind of study can provide strong evidence for cause-and-effect relationships.

Weakness
 provides no evidence of equivalence of groups before treatment.
