Chapter I
Beginning
A. Background
We want to speak English. It is a connect with intonation. What is the definition of intonation? If
we’re talking about the definition of intonation in English, what we’re talking about really is
pitch and the use of rhythm in speech. And the pitch and the rhythm start to add feeling and
intention, because the meaning is really revealed in the language that we’re using and the
construction of our sentences.
We should have known about this because every we want to speak we need to sound, it’s a good
soun. So the audience can understand what we say and we want to show the important what of
we saying tpo them.
Sound like a rising and falling intonation. A rising intonatin pattern would simply be a rise in the
human voice; it would be a change in pitch; a glide in the pitch of our voice upwards. And a
falling intonation or downward intonation patten, would simple mean that pitch of the voice
drops down.

Chapter II
Discussion
Use punctuation to help your pronounciation skills by adding a pause after each periode, comma,
semi-colon or colon. By using punctuation to guide when you pause while reading, you will
begin to speak in a more natural manner. Make sure to read the example sentences on this page
out load using the pronounciation tips provided. Example :
I’m going to visit my friends in Chicago. They have a beautiful house, so I’m staying with them
for two weeks.
In this example, pause after ‘Chicago’ and ‘house’. This will help anyone who’s listening to you
follow you more easily. On the other hand, if you rush through the periods and commas (and
other punctuation marks) your pronounciation will sound unnatural and it will be difficult for
listener to follow your thoughts.
Punctuation that marks the end of a sentence also has specific intonation. Intonation means the
rising and the lowering of the voice when speaking. In other words, intonation refers to the voice
rising and falling. Let’s take a look at the different types of intonation used with pronounciation.
Rising Voice
Rising intonation is how your voice rises at the end of the sentences.
If the question is a yes/no question, the voice rises at the end of a question.
5
Have you seen my father?
Am I pretty?
Am I to be blamed?
Falling Voice
Falling intonation describes how the voice falls on the final stress syllable of a phrase or group of
words. It is very common in question word question. Example :
On the sentences :
Hello.
What’s that?
Yes, I am.
Question tags to confirm : If you think you know something, but would like to confirm it, let the
voice fall in the question tag. Example : you live in Stabat, don’t you?, This is easy, isn’t it?
6
Question tags to ask for clarification : When using a question tag to clarify, let the voice rise to
let the listener know that you expect more information. Example : Nada isn’t going to be at the
party, is he?, You know my name, don’t you?

Chapter III
Conclusion
A rising intonation pattern would be used typically for questions or for lists.
Falling intonation, this downward intonation tends to be used for exclamation, statements and
commands and at the end of our sentences.
But there is this extra circumflex inflection: rise, fall, rise. And we typically use it when we’re in
the middle of our conversations and at then end of each phrase, at the end of each segment.
We use this circumflex inflection to say that we haven’t finish yet but when we do finish we use
a falling intonation and it falls.
