BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

Name: Chenia Brown

Grade Level: 6th Grade
Content Area: Earth Science
Basic Productivity Tool Used: Sway
Standards Addressed: S6E5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to show how
Earth’s surface is formed.

a. Ask questions to compare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, inner and outer core, including
temperature, density, thickness, and composition.

Description of how to implement in the class:
Students will create a Sway that compares each layer of the Earth and identify important
characteristics about each. In order to do this, students will be given a list of prompts that describe
the characteristics without using the name of the layer. For example, one prompt may say, “I am the
densest layer out of all the layers and have the highest temperatures.” So, the students will have to
research in order to match the layer with its characteristics. With this information, students will be
able to create a Sway that correctly captures the characteristics of Earth’s layers.
When students are done creating their Sway, they will find a partner to collaborate with and
review their Sway. Students will make sure each other’s products are a correct representation of each
layer. At the end of this lesson, we will come together as a class and discuss which layer corresponds
to each prompt. By the end of this lesson, students should be able to compare and contrast the Earth’s
crust, mantle, inner and outer core.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): LoTi level 4- Integration best describes this lesson
because the students are engaging in higher order thinking such as creating and applying.

Description of the sample Sway activity used with your students: The sample of the Sway I have
created is an example of a product that a student would create for this lesson.
