Question 1 (20 Marks)

An angle in tension is connected by one leg. A 100 mm x 65 mm x7 mm single angle tie is

connected through the smaller leg by two 20 mm diameter bolts in line with a pitch of 2.5do

as shown in Figure Ql. Assuming S275 steel and material factors of safety ofyM2=1.25 and

YMo= 1, determine the following:

a) Net area of the cross section

Question 2 (30 Marks)

A simply supported laterally unrestrained steel beam is to span 6 m and support a factored
design load of 70 kN/m. S~lf-weight of the beam has also been considered as part of the
design load.

a) Determine maximum design bending moment (MEd) and design shear force (VEd)

[05 Marks]

b) Propose an appropriate Universal Beam (UBIUKB) to carry design bending moment

and design shear force and classify the proposed beam using classification criteria
given in Section 5.5 for EN 1993-1-1.

[10 Marks]

c) Verify the proposed section usmg design bending resistance (Mc,Rd) and shear
resistance (Vc,Rd) of the beam.

d) The design buckling resistance moment of a laterally unrestrained beam can be
estimated using the following equation.

I) Determine reduction factor XLT for lateral torsional buckling and

appropriate section modulus Wy.
[10 Marks]

e) Verify the suitability of the proposed section by validating the design bending
moment (MEd) with design buckling resistance moment (Mb,Rd).
[03 Marks]

Question 3 (25 Marks)

The first floor of a 3-storey classroom building in a school is to be constructed in timber. It

has been proposed to use 16 mm thick, 200 mm wide, tongue and groove timber planks of
strength class C 16 for this purpose. The planks are to be supported on cross-beams having a
uniform cross-section of dimensions 63 mm x 200 mm placed at a centre to centre spacing of
0.8 m. The cross-beams are of strength class C24. These cross-beams are supported on
200 ~thick walls 5 m apart. (See Figure Q3).

a) What is the value of the imposed load you would use for the design of this floor?
What would be its load duration class? [4 marks]

b) Find the uniformly distributed load that would be acting on a cross-beam under the
ultimate limit state (ULS). [4 marks]

c) Check whether the cross-beams would perform satisfactorily under the ultimate limit
state (ULS). (Consider bending stresses, shear stresses, and bearing stresses).
[10 marks]

d) Determine the initial and final deflections in the cross-beams. [5 marks]

e) Check whether the deflections are satisfactory according to the guidelines provided in
the UK National Annex to EC5. [2 marks]

Question 4 (25 Marks)

A part of the upper floor of a two-storey building is to be used as a storage area. This part of
the floor is supported by a set of timber columns between it and the ground floor. These
columns may be considered to be restrained in position and in direction at the ground floor
level and in position only at the upper floor level. The height of a column is 3.5 m. It has
been proposed to use a square section of dimensions 125 mm x 125 mm in C 14 timber for
these columns.

(Note: In answering the following questions it is NOT necessary to check for lateral torsional
buckling of the columns).

a) Assume that the axial compressive load on a column is acting along the axis of the
column. (i.e. there is Nq eccentricity). Determine the largest load each column would be
able to carry safely under the ultimate limit state (ULS). [10 Marks]
b) Assume that the variable and permanent actions on the upper floor causes each of these
columns to be subjected to an ultimate axial compressive load of 25 kN and an ultimate
moment of 1.0 kNm about the y-axis. Check whether each column would be able to
carry these loads safely. [10 Marks]
c) Assume that each column is subjected to an ultimate axial compressive load of 25 kN
together with an ultimate moment of 1.0 kNm about the y-axis and an ultimate moment
of 1.0 kN about the z-axis as well. Check whether each column would be able to carry
these loads safely. (5 Marks]
