Learning Plan
Activating: Timeline
1) The teacher will pull up English Media Lab on the smart board (ICT use) and do 2 of the
business language quizzes with students coming up to connect the matches on the smart 10 minutes
board as an introduction to the unit and lesson. Ask the questions: What types of careers/
businesses do you think this language is most suited to? (to activate what kinds of words and
phrases they will look for in the acquire & apply stages)
2) Then on the kids devices get them to do the 6 second resume quiz on
https://resumegenius.com/6-second-resume-challenge. (ICT use) (to get them thinking about
format, language and visual appeal)
These fun activities may activate some prior knowledge
Acquiring:
Carousel: 25 minutes
1) The students will be put into groups of 3-4, and given 5 minutes at each of the 4 stations
that will have a resume and cover letter sample at each. The students will be told that at each
station they will write a few words on the chart paper that stick out to them on the resume,
and anything about the formatting that stands out, and will discuss what career field they
think that it may come from and why. The next group can put check marks by ones they also
noticed and add others.
2) As a class discuss those phrases and words and the formats, and find out what they mean,
and what fields those resumes are from.

Applying: 25 minutes
Students will then get a chance to pick a career of interest to them, and find an example of a
resume online/ on Microsoft 360 programs (ie Word has a bank of resume styles), and they
will highlight words and phrases that seem to be specific to that career. Then they will
compare it to other resumes to confirm their thinking or challenge it. Students will then
discuss with a partner what they noticed and found out.

Assessment FOR: have students submit a list of 5 words/ skills/ phrases/ formatting details
that seem to be indicators for their chosen career.
