light and ecology

Webster's Seventh New Collegiale Diclionary delines ecology
as "the lotality or paltern ol relations belween organisms and
lheir environment."
Man (the organism) has been lhe viclim ol considerable abuse
from water pollution, air pollution and other lorms ol pollution
which directly alfect the biologic process. ln addition, man
has been adversely affecled, lrom a sociological viewpoint,
by such factors as excessive population density, high noise
levels and visual pollulion.
Outdoor lighling has become a maior source of visual pollu-
lion by reason ol ugliness and glare. During lhe day, mosl
lighting equipment has no aeslhelic relalionship lo its sur-
rounding architecture or landscape, which tends to deslroy
the ellect that the designer tries to achieve. At night, most

concept/teatures
The elliciency of a lighting fixture is
scale versus directly proportional to the size of ils
fast
efficiency relleclor. As lhe relleclor gels smaller, insti
lhe elliciency decreases sharply. This is
why Kim designers have carelully scaled low
this fixture lo look properly proporlioned mair
at its lowesl mounting height ol l2 feet,
while retaining optimum elliciency by nol
sacrilicing relleclor design. ll is lhe most
ellicient luminaire of its type on the
markel loday.

glare control Glare is the principle cause of light

pollution and resulls from imprecise
reflector design, lhe use of prismatic
Ienses, and poor shieldinq oI the lighl
soutce above normal viewing angles.
Kim EKG Iuminaires have solved lhis
problem by recessing lhe lamp in a
precision hydrof ormed relleclor. The wall
result is a highly elficient luminaire lhal
produces high levels ol illuminalion on
the ground while keeping a "low key"
profile lhrough the elimination ol
high-angle glare.

due lo a unique geomelry belween lamp

long lerm period. A clear Lexan@ shield
can provide lhis proleclion as Ionq as lhe

CAUTION: The usefullile ol Lexan@ is
severely limited due lo yellowing caused
by UV from sunlight and mercury vapor
lamps.
Fixlure and arm are self aligning and
fast can be inslalled on the pole wilh only a
installation sockel wtench.
Relleclor is hinged downward by
low cost releasing two quarler-lurn Ialches

assembly and wiring.
Ballasl and related components are
mounted as a self-conlained

Allcomponenls are pre-wired with quick
disconneci plugs. Ballast assembly can
be quickly disconnecied and completely
removed from lhe lixture lor servicing in
the shop. A replacemenl assembly can
be inslantly inserled and connected for
minimum interruption in service and
reduced mainlenance iime.

wall mounting Wall mounling is an excellent way lo
