Experimental design - Phase one

The experiments with mortar specimens will be: Mechanical

characterization, permeability and hydraulic fracture.

50 cylindrical mortar specimens with a dimension of 10.50 cm

height by 5.30 cm base will be manufactured.

10 rectangular mortar specimens will be manufactured for Bending

test, bearing in mind that the maximum size of a particule in an
andesite rock is up to 0.20 mm[1], so the dimensions of each beam
will be 5x5x30 cm.

Experimentation

Mechanical characterization

10 Specimen of Uniaxial compression test:

a) Estimation of elastic properties (Young modulus E, Poisson’s ratio ϑ).
b) Estimation of fracture properties (Maximum compressive strength 𝛔c).

10 rectangular Specimen for Bending test:

a) Estimation of fracture toughness
b) Evolution of fracture toughness with temperature ( Ambient temperature test)
c) Monitoring acoustic emission during test (eventually)

10 Specimen of Indirect tensile test:

a)Estimation of fracture toughness, b) Evolution of fracture toughness with temperature

(eventually), c) Monitoring acoustic emission during test (eventually).
Permeabilidad

10 Specimens for Permeability test (The specimens will also be used for Hydraulic
fracture)
a) Pororsity analysis using 3D tomography
b) Estimation of porosity using ultrasonic waves
c) Estimation of permeability of intact samples

Hydraulic fracture

Hydraulic fracture (using oil )

a) Evolution of hydro-mechanical properties with confinement pressure
b) Evolution of hydro-mechanical properties with confinement pressure and
temperature (Test up to 200 º C temperature )
c) Porosity analysis using 3D tomography:
-study of the fracture networks created by hydraulic fracture
-roughness analysis of created fractures
d) Permeability test on fractured samples

In the hydraulic fracture test, Mobil DTE 20 oil, which is a fluid whose
viscosity can be considered constant over time, will be used as a fracture
fluid and is therefore considered NEWTONIAN FLUID. The one-
dimensional flow of this fluid can be represented as:

Txy: Tangential tension exerted at a point of the fluid

on a surface, u: viscosity of the fluid, dvx/dy: velocity
gradient perpendicular to the direction of the plane.

Temperature test: The tests will be carried out with a tentative temperature of
120 to 150º C, since the temperatures reported in a geothermal field are
approximately up to 170º C.
Proportion of mortar mixtures supply for 4,239.5 cm3 of mortar with an A/C
ratio of 0.4 with a CPC 40RS cement and SikaCem additive for cylindrical
specimens.
