Dear Student

BACKGROUND: DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT FUNDAMENTAL COMPETENCIES

CTU found that most students in the past couple of years struggled with the basic understanding and
application of Computer, Mathematics and English Literacy competencies. The lack of these
competencies has a negative impact on the students’ learning and results in a low pass rate.

In order to support students with these challenges, CTU will assess the Computer, Mathematics and
English Literacy of all students after registration and before the commencement of the Academic year.

Students identified as possible “at risk students” based on the results will have to improve those
competencies. CTU will provide support to them through the process below.

PROCESS

Step 1

Once a student has registered and paid all the required fees, they will receive a student login to the
Student Portal. Also, please click on the link to navigate to the Diagnostic assessments.

Step 2

On the CTU website, a link will be available to the Diagnostic assessment. The student must login and
complete the assessment within a week of registration.

Step 3

Students will complete an online assessment of Computer, Mathematics and English Literacy. The
assessment will be 30 minutes each. In order to pass these assessments, a pass rate of 50% will be
required. Results will be given to students immediately after completion. Results will also be
communicated to the campus Academic Principal.

Step 4

Students who passed the assessment can decide if they would like to attend the Fundamental
Competency Programme or not. Should they decide to attend, they have to inform the Academic
Principal at their campus. Students who failed the Computer assessment will be required to attend
the Fundamental Competency Programme/s from 29 to 31 January 2018 at the campus of enrolment.

Step 5

CTU will have the following options in regards to a fundamental competencies programme:

COMPUTER LITERACY:

Computer typing fundamentals: Students will have the option of either enrolling for a basic computer
typing programme or an MS Office fundamental programme. The computer typing programme called
Typing Pal will develop the computer typing skills of the learners. This programme will be offered free
of charge to all students. Typing Pal will be available on the student portal and students can complete
the programme in their own time during class breaks or after hours. The Academic Principal will
monitor the progress of all students. Students will be given a due date by when the programme must
be completed.

Fundamental competencies in MS Office: The same programme used for the Teachers Training
programme will be utilised. i.e. One day Word, One day Excel and one day PowerPoint. These
programmes will be offered free of charge to our students. This programme must be completed from
29 to 31 January 2018. With regards to the second semester intake, the programme should be
completed during the first two weeks of the second semester. Students must complete all the
activities of the programme.

COMMUNICATION LITERACY:

Fundamental English Literacy programme: Reading is an important skill to develop in order to sustain
a productive life. Reading is not limited to simply enjoying a novel or gathering information and
knowledge but also effects communication skills through developing and enhancing language and
perception skills. As a result, improved comprehension, understanding and interpretation of ideas and
concepts is improved with developed reading and literacy skills. Some students will have to complete
a basic English reading and writing programme as the Language Policy of CTU requires that all teaching
and learning will be done in English.

Students will be advised to register with the nearest KUMON Centre from the campus. This training
will not be compulsory but highly recommended, as it will support the student throughout the year.
It will be the responsibility of the student to enrol with the centre and pay the required fees to the
KUMON Centre. A student who decides to enrol with another similar centre may do so. Students will
be requested to provide progress feedback from the Centre.
MATHEMATICAL LITERACY:

Fundamental Maths and Maths Literacy Programme: Students really battle with basic mathematic
calculations and understanding. It is therefore required to provide extra support to them if they failed
the diagnostic assessment.

Students will be advised to register with the nearest KUMON Centre from the campus. This training
will not be compulsory but highly recommended, as it will support the student throughout the year.
It will be the responsibility of the student to enrol with the centre and pay the required fees to the
KUMON Centre. A student who decides to enrol with another similar centre may do so. Students will
be requested to provide progress feedback from the Centre.
