Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For students hard of hearing we could put captions on. Students can use headphones to listen to the video.
The video also comes in different languages if needed.
Lesson idea implementation: The standard states, “The student will read about and describe the
lives of historical figures in Georgia History.” The historical figure that we will be focusing on is
Martin Luther King. The lesson will start out with watch the BrainPop video on Martin Luther King.
After, watching the video as a class we will discuss and listen to his “I Have a Dream” speech. The
students then will write their own “I Have a Dream” speech.
The students will use a fill-in-the-blanks worksheet to write their speeches and imitate the
form and content of Dr. King’s speech. Once the students finish writing their speech, they will peer
edit their work with a partner. Once their speeches have been edited, the students will use

technology to share their speech with the class. The can record it, make a video, or use a
PowerPoint. The students will be able to choose what type of technology they want to use to
present. Their product will be the student presenting their own speech. I will provide feedback as
the students work by walking around and observing the students. I will have a chart with the entire
student on it and will make sure they are hitting all of the key points. I will also provide feedback
after the students present their speech.
Reflective Practice: I think this lesson would impact students learning by giving them an opportunity to truly
understand what Dr. King’s speech meant and how it changed the lives of many. I could extend this lesson by
posting the students work to the class blog or by having the students present their speech to other classes in
the school.
