2.1. Define displacement [2]

2.2 A person going for a walk follows the path shown in the figure below. The total trip consists of
four straight line paths. At the end of the walk, what is the magnitude and direction of the
resultant displacement measured from the starting point? [6]

2.3 The left ventricle of the heart accelerates blood from rest to a velocity of +26 cm/s.

a. If the displacement travelled by the blood is +2.0 cm, determine its acceleration. [3]
b. Find the time it takes the blood to reach its final velocity of 26 cm/s2? [3]

2.4. A box is hanging at rest from a wire when suddenly the wire breaks. The time it takes for the ball
to fall halfway to the ground is 1.2 s. Find the time it takes for the box to fall from rest all the
way to the ground. [4]

3.1. Define or state the following:
a. Newton’s second law in words, [2]
b. A non-conservative force. [2]

3.2. A roller-coaster car starts from rest at the top of an 18 m hill as shown in the diagram below.
The car travels to the bottom of the hill and continues up the next hill that is 10.0 m high. How
fast is the car moving at the top of the 10.0 m hill, if friction is ignored? [4]

3.3. A cord passing over a massless and frictionless pulley has a 10 kg mass hanging from one end
and a 6 kg mass hanging from the other, as shown in the figure below. Find the acceleration of
the masses. [4]

3.4. A 70 kg skier is coasting down a 25 o slope as shown in the figure below. Near the top of the
slope, the skier has an initial speed of 3.6 m/s. She accelerates down the slope and the
magnitude of the kinetic friction which opposes her motion is 60 N. Ignoring the air resistance,
determine her final speed at the bottom of 30 m downhill. [5]

3.5. In the drawing, the weight of the block on the table is 185 N and that of the hanging block is
422 N. The friction coefficient between the 185 N and the table is 0.125. Assuming the pulley to
be massless and frictionless, calculate the acceleration of the two blocks, and the tension in the
cord. [6]

3.6. A 1.50 kg hammer strikes a nail with a speed of 4.50 m/s and bounces back with the same
speed after an elastic collision lasting 0.075 s. What is the magnitude of the average force the
hammer exerts on the nail? [3]

3.7. The ballistic pendulum shown in the figure below consists of a stationery 2.50 kg block of wood
suspended by a wire of negligible mass. A bullet of mass 0.030 kg is fired into the block. The
block and bullet swings to a maximum height of 0.650 m above the initial position. Assume that
air resistance is negligible; determine the speed with which the bullet is fired. [6]
