Title: Paraplegic Rehabilitation Center

Thesis Statement:

A healthy design space for disabled where they can re-consolidate themselves, it provide
rehabilitation to the needed ones so that they are reinvigorated with a new outlook towards
life, family and surrounding environment.
Objective:
 To design a center for disabled to treat, educate and train a disability.
 To design built and un-built spaces such that their aura can bind to create a calm,
peaceful and recuperative atmosphere.
 To design and integrate special spaces like:
- Therapeutic Gardens
- Aroma Gardens
- Infrastructure for leisure activities.
 To enhance the Environment Quality of the complex which will stimulate and
facilitate his psychological treatment.
Designing for Disabled require special design considerations as they need subtle and sensory
responsive environment.
 Studying the Disabled behaviour will bring in the participation and inspirational
design features in to the design.
 Some constraints area ls to be kept in mind as initial stages of are covering disabled`s
are harshly depressive and in some cases, could generate suicidal tendencies.
Methodology:
Study: Disability, Rehabilitation, Behavioural Patterns
 Identification of aims and objectives of the thesis with reasons for selection and
potential for architectural design.
 Understanding the different types of addiction, their symptoms, withdrawals and other
treatment methods.
Analysis: Functional Spaces, Site, Prototypes
 The study of the different therapeutic approaches in this field. Identify a set of design
philosophies based on above study taking in to consideration both the physical and
psychological need of these people. Set out the spaces required in center with their
areas and user capacity
 To analyse and understand the environmental, functional, special and perceptual
aspects of a Paraplegic Rehabilitation Center along with a complete study and
analysis of the site by surveying all existing features associated with it including site,
bye-laws, services, topography, access, vegetation and climatology.
 Understanding the effects of various forms, light and colour on the behavioural
pattern of the disabled.
CONCEPTUALIZATION>DESIGN>SOLUTION
 Formulation of a site-specific program based on the earlier study. The next stage
would be the design concept taking into consideration all the design guidelines. The
concept would include zoning of various areas, and activities taking into
consideration the circulation pattern, spatial concept, and visual concept.
 Arrive at a built environment and incorporate various services required in the center.
Site:
Site is located in south – western zone of sector-9. site is easily accessible by the road 201.
Besides roadways the site also easily accessible from metro station of sector – 9 (500m) and
sector – 8 bus stand, both are in close vicinity to the site’s location.
