Domesticating the form, taming the structure

La arquitectura de Graça Correia y Roberto Ragazzi tiene muchas virtudes, en el
sentido de su origen latino, virtutem como valor físico y vires como fuerzas. Es una
arquitectura con fuerte presencia de lo material llevado a lo extremo de su depuración
física y estética. De entre todas las virtudes de su arquitectura nos vamos a centrar
precisamente en esa que pone elegantemente en relación fuerza y forma a través de
la estructura.
En su origen latino, la estructura (structus-ura, struere) es el resultado de lo
construido, vinculado con la idea de reunir ordenadamente las partes de un todo.
Precisamente la noción de orden resulta clave para entender la concepción clásica de
la estructura, porque todo es uno de manera indisoluble. La modernidad, en cambio,
posibilitó la independencia de las partes y por lo tanto también el carácter singular
de la estructura, su independencia de la forma, del espacio y del lenguaje. Desde
entonces, la estructura es capaz de convertirse en tema principal de la arquitectura
y mostrarse como un valor supremo tanto de lo físico como de lo estético. Pero esta
independencia también ha llevado a la estructura a sufrir el destierro de lo oculto en
dos versiones extremas: el destierro absoluto de lo aparentemente superfluo y el
destierro de lo contingente, de lo mágico. La primera versión relega la estructura a un
papel necesario pero invisible de gestión de la gravedad, y por lo tanto su mayor virtud
aparente es no ser necesaria. La segunda posibilidad supone una tensión implícita, ya
que la magia necesita obligatoriamente ocultar a los ojos del espectador aquello que
la hace posible, o como lo describe Cecil Balmond:
“Pedir a una masa que levite no es una cuestión nueva; siempre existe la demanda
arquitectónica por la ligereza, visiones de tabula rasa con ningún interés en la
gravedad. La estructura en estas situaciones simplemente se interpone en el camino,
convirtiéndose en enemiga de la promesa”1.
En estos dos extremos, según sea el caso, la estructura independiente bien domina o
bien está al servicio de la forma.
Pero existen lugares intermedios, en los que la estructura sigue teniendo un
papel fundamental en la definición del objeto construido. En la arquitectura de
Correia+Ragazzi, la estructura ocupa precisamente esos lugares intermedios. En su
trabajo resulta evidente el protagonismo que tiene la estructura desde la concepción
misma, pero aunque no se trabaja de manera autónoma ni se impone al resultado
formal, tampoco se esconde buscando obtener ese efecto mágico de sorpresa tan
contemporáneo. Su manera de entender la función y la relación de la estructura con
la arquitectura se encuentra muy alejada de la separación de ambos en dos sistemas
autónomos, el puramente estructural y el puramente estético2.
En realidad, podemos verlo desde los inicios, en sus bocetos, la estructura ni se
oculta ni se impone a la forma, el mismo trazo las contiene a ambas. Recuerda en
muchas ocasiones a una bailarín extendido en equilibrio con la sutil elegancia de hacer
parecer fácil lo difícil, de minimizar un gran esfuerzo. No hay renuncia a la gravedad,
al peso, pero sin imponerse a la forma. Predomina la noción de equilibrio, no de un
equilibrio visualmente inestable sino, precisamente por la indivisibilidad entre forma
y estructura, de un equilibrio en el que ambas pesan por igual.
En la casa de Gerês, la estructura es la arquitectura, no la sustituye ni la representa,
es el objeto formal que se implanta en el paisaje. La estructura es el motivo
último y el sistema de relación con el territorio. Las decisiones de implantación
The architecture of Graça Correia and Roberto Ragazzi has many virtues, in
the sense of its Latin origin, virtutem as physical value and vires as forces. It is
an architecture with a strong presence of material taken to the extreme of its
physical and aesthetic debugging. Of all the virtues of their architecture, we are
going to focus precisely on that which elegantly puts in relation force and form
through the structure.
In its Latin origin, the structure (structus-ura, struere) is the result of the
constructed, linked with the idea of orderly gathering the parts of a whole.
Precisely the notion of order is key to understanding the classical conception
of structure, because everything is one in an indissoluble way. Modernity, on
the other hand, enabled the independence of the parties and therefore also the
unique character of the structure, its independence of form, space and language.
Since then, the structure is able to become the main theme of architecture and
show itself as a supreme value of both the physical and the aesthetic. But this
independence has also led the structure to suffer the exile of the occult in two
extreme versions: the absolute banishment of the seemingly superfluous and the
exile of the contingent, the magical. The first version relegates the structure to a
necessary but invisible role of management of gravity, and therefore its greatest
apparent virtue is not to be necessary. The second possibility involves an implicit
tension, since magic necessarily needs to hide from the eyes of the beholder what
makes it possible, or as described by Cecil Balmond:
“To ask a mass to levitate is not a new question; there is always an architectural
demand for lightness of being, tabula rasa visions with nothing to account for
gravity. Structure in these situations simply gets in the way, becoming an enemy
of promise”.1
In these two extremes, as the case may be, the independent structure either
dominates or is at the service of form.
But there are intermediate places, in which the structure still plays a fundamental
role in the definition of the constructed object. In the architecture of Correia
+ Ragazzi, the structure occupies precisely these intermediate places. In their
work, the protagonism of the structure is obvious from the very conception, but
although it does not work autonomously or impose itself on the formal result,
neither hides looking to get that magical effect of surprise so contemporary. Their
way of understanding the function and relation of structure to architecture is far
removed from the separation of the two into two autonomous systems, the purely
structural and the purely aesthetic2.
In fact, we can see it from the beginning, in their sketches, the structure is neither
hidden nor imposed on the form, the same line contains both. Many times it
remembers a dancer stretched out in balance with the subtle elegance of making
the difficult seem easy, of minimizing a great effort. No waiver of gravity, of
weight, but not imposed on the form. The notion of equilibrium prevails, not of a
visually unstable equilibrium but, precisely because of the indivisibility between
form and structure, an equilibrium in which both weigh equally.
In the house of Gerês, the structure is the architecture, it does not replace it
nor represent it, it is the formal object implanted in the landscape. Structure is
the ultimate motive and the system of relation with the territory. The decisions

se concretan en una formalización volumétrica y estructural del objeto unitaria e
indisoluble. Esta relación nos recuerda a las palabras que A. G. Komendant pone en
boca de L. I. Kahn con respecto a los laboratorios Richards: “Los elementos y sus
formas, así como la estructura que componen, se derivan con tanta lógica de las
necesidades arquitectónicas que estructura y edificación no se pueden separar, la
una deriva de la otra”3.
En la casa de Lousado la estructura trabaja igualmente para la concreción de la
imagen y del carácter representativo del objeto. En este caso, a diferencia del
anterior, aunque indisoluble de la arquitectura, la estructura no se representa a si
misma sino que se concreta en la representación de objetivos formales, espaciales y
simbólicos externos a ella.
En Guimaraes reaparece el equilibrio como uno de los hilos conductores de la obra.
En este caso el volumen nuevo parece reproducir la tensión entre lo pesado y lo ligero
que se establece entre el volumen conformado por muros de granito atados al suelo,
y que surge de la tierra, y el pequeño volumen del hórreo, más ligero, levantado, y que
parece flotar por encima de los graníticos muros de piedra. En este nuevo volumen
la solución estructural para resolver el frágil equilibrio entre las piezas a su vez
caracteriza el espacio interior. Por lo tanto, no sólo se muestra como representación
de la solución estructural a un problema determinado sino que resulta inseparable de
la propia configuración espacial interior a la pieza.
Esta relación entre la arquitectura y su estructura continúa fuertemente presente
en su obra actualmente en elaboración o de futura ejecución. Podemos leerlo en la
configuración estructural-espacial-formal del claustro de la iglesia de Meinedo, o en la
potente estructura-volumen de madera del recientemente finalizado restaurante en
Lapas. También está presente en las elegantes estructuras pautadas de hormigón de
la casa en Valadares o de la casa Wiesner. Pero también en la propuesta para la casa
Aufmont o en el conjunto de viviendas de Marechal, podemos encontrar esa relación
unitaria e indisoluble entre estructura y solución formal-representativa.
Para todos estos proyectos, podemos buscar referencias, entre otras, en la arquitectura
de Paulo Mendes da Rocha, en las propuestas domésticas de Marcel Breuer, o en las
esbeltas y elegantes seriaciones de láminas de hormigón de Sverre Fehn.
Volviendo a la etimología de las palabras, domar y domesticar comparten la misma
raíz latina de la casa, domus. Palabras sinónimas, los matices son importantes en este
caso, puesto que lo doméstico ya forma parte de la casa mientras que lo domado,
aunque sometido, sigue siendo conservando su esencia salvaje. Graça y Roberto
consiguen domar la estructura para que sea parte indisoluble de la forma. O lo que es
lo mismo, es a través de la estructura domada que la forma se domestica.

are concretized in a volumetric and structural formalization of the unitary and
indissoluble object. This relationship reminds us of the words A. G. Komendant
puts into the mouth of L. I. Kahn regarding Richards laboratories: “The elements
and their forms, as well as the structure that they compose, derive so logically
from the architectural needs that structure and edification cannot be separated,
the one derives from the other”3.
In Lousado house the structure works equally for the concretion of the image and
the representative character of the object. In this case, unlike the previous, although
indissoluble of architecture, the structure does not represent itself but is concretized
in the representation of formal, spatial and symbolic external objectives.
In Guimaraes equilibrium reappears as one of the conducting threads of the
work. In this case the new volume seems to reproduce the tension between the
heavy and the light that is established between the volume formed by granite
walls tied to the ground and growing from the earth and the small volume of the
granary, lighter, raised, and which seems to float above the granite stone walls. In
this new volume, the structural solution to solve the fragile balance between the
pieces, in turn, characterizes the interior space. Therefore, it is not only shown as
a representation of the structural solution to a given problem but is inseparable
from the interior’s own spatial configuration of the volume.
This relationship between the architecture and its structure continues strongly
present in their work in progress. We can read it in the structural-spatial-formal
configuration of the cloister of the church of Meinedo, or in the powerful structure-
volume wood of the recently completed restaurant in Lapas. It is also present
in the elegant patterned concrete structures of the house in Valadares or the
Wiesner house. But also in the proposal for the Aufmont house or in the Marechal
housing group, we can find that unitary and indissoluble relationship between
structure and formal-representative solution.
For all these projects, we can look for references, among others, in the
architecture of Paulo Mendes da Rocha, in the domestic proposals of Marcel
Breuer, or in the slender and elegant seriations of concrete slabs by Sverre Fehn.
Returning to the etymology of words, taming comes from the proto-germanic
tamaz (brought into the home), while domesticating share the Latin root of the
domus. Synonymous words, the nuances are important in this case, since the
domestic is already part of the house while the tamed, although subdued, is
brought into the house and keeps a wild essence. Graça and Roberto manage to
tame the structure so it becomes an indissoluble part of the form. In other words,
it is through the tamed structure that the form is domesticated.
