PART 1

1
The CPS response system consists
of response pads and a coordinating
receiver unit. Each uniquely
General Content numbered response pad transmits

1 responses that the receiver unit

records, and the CPS software
automatically attributes the
responses to the corresponding
1.1 What Does CPS Do?
response pad number assigned to
each student. The CPS response
system uses either infrared or radio
frequency technology.
The Classroom Performance System (CPS), also known as "clickers" or
"remotes" are handheld devices that allow students to respond to
surveys or selected response questions anonymously. Teachers get
immediate results without having to grade assessments. With the CPS software,
teachers are able to make their own questions within the software, use PowerPoint
presentations, use ExamView banks or tests, or even create a Fast Grade lesson in which students use an
assessment that is on paper and enter their answers with the remotes.

How Can the CPS System Benefit You?

Curriculum Connections
 Pre-assess before a lesson to differentiate students into learning groups based on their previous
knowledge.
 Assess students to see if they understand the content that is being taught. This will help you
know if you need to reteach.
 Provide instant feedback to students and enables timely discussion about questions and content.
 Instantly receive detailed analysis of content linked to objectives or state standards

Equipment Needed
 Computer to run software
 CPS Software – Installed by IT department
 CPS IR, CPS RF, CPS Pulse, or CPS Spark remotes
 CPS receiver

2 Overview
Contexts and Settings

A survey was given to teachers of the Combs High School Science department for professional
development training in the 2016-2017 school year. They were given a list of possible subjects
to be trained. Unanimously they selected to be trained on the Classroom Performance System
software and clickers. The software was purchased three years ago but are not being used.
There has never been training on the use of the CPS clickers in the JO Combs district.

Intended Users

This program was developed for the science teachers of Combs High School. The teachers who
will be attending are:

Melanie Weinstein: Melanie is a teacher who is regularly using the CPS in her classroom
and is interested in how to connect standards and objectives to classroom exams and
quizzes.

Richard Surls: Rick is a veteran teacher of 30+ years. He is interested in the CPS
clickers, but does not know how to set them up or how to instruct students on how to
use them. He can use a laptop comfortably and basic programs such as Microsoft Power
Point or Microsoft Word. He needs training on all aspects of CPS.

Kirk Rundle: Kirk is in his 5th year as a science teacher at Combs high school. He
retired from his career at Intel and made a second career out of teaching. He is very
comfortable using technology and is looking forward to using the CPS clickers in his
classroom. He needs training on all aspects of CPS.

Ashely Kellogg: Ashely is in her 3rd year of teaching and is in her 1st year at Combs high
school. She has never used the clickers and needs training on all aspects CPS.

Michelle Guest: Michelle is a 1st year teacher. She has been a substitute teacher for the
Combs School District for 20 years and was a student teacher in my classroom last
school year. She is familiar with how to instruct students on how to use the clickers due
to being in my classroom for a semester. However, she did not set up the system and is
a little worried she does not remember how to troubleshoot common user issues.

Length of Training Program

The training will consists of one - one hour course and will take place on Monday September
26, 2016. District Professional development Certificates will be awarded to teachers after
completion of the training program.
Instructional Goal

3
All participants will be able to incorporate the use of CPS remotes to teach in a science/math
classroom.

Instructional Objectives

Objective 1: All participants will be able to create their own class rosters and an example assessment in
the Classroom Performance System software as demonstrated by a completed class roster and sample
assessment by the teacher at the end of the CPS one hour training program.

Objective 2: All participants will be able to use the CPS clickers for regular classroom assessment and
data analysis by demonstrating knowledge and ability to use the clickers by “engaging” a sample exam
participants created in the training program and demonstrate to the instructor they can generate reports
in the CPS system.

Introduction:

I am so glad that you want to learn how to use the Classroom Performance System. This is a
great program that can help you analyze student achievement and also make your grading
considerably easier and take less time.

We are going to start with a pre-test and see what you already know about CPS.

1) Give a brief demonstration on how to use the clickers.

2) Pass out the Pre-test.
3) Have them enter their responses in the clickers.
4) Display the report analysis on the SmartBoard. Talk about how fast the report was
generated and the information you can learn from the summary report.
a. Example: We have a class average of 23% on this pre-test. I see that most of
you understood question #1, but we need to cover in detail the information from
questions #2-5.

Procedures

1.0 What is the CPS (Classroom Performance System)?

1.1 What does it do?
1.2 How is it useful to you as a teacher?

1) Using the Learner’s manual go over information presented on page 2.

Objective 1: All participants will be able to create their own class rosters and an
example assessment in the Classroom Performance System software as
demonstrated by a completed class roster and sample assessment by the teacher at
the end of the CPS one hour training program.

2.0 Getting Started with the Software (Installed by IT before training program)
2.1 Create a new database / class rosters
2.1.1 Direct input into CPS
2.1.2 Import from CVS file
2.1.3 Edit student information after entered

1) Using the Learner’s manual state learning objective #1 on page 3

2) Using the Learner’s manual go over information presented on pages
3-5
3) As you go over the material have your version of CPS open on your
computer and displayed on the SmartBoard
4) Create a sample class for the teachers to view

6
5) Create a sample roster for the teachers to view
6) Allow teachers to use their own classroom rosters and create a new
class and roster in the CPS system installed on their computers
7) Walk around and answer any questions teachers may have
as they practice creating a new class and new rosters
8) Congratulate the teachers on their good work

3.0 Creating FastGrade Exams and Lessons

3.1 Enter directly into CPS software
3.2 How to import from Test Generator
3.3 Linking questions to objectives and state standards

1) Have a short hard copy exam as an example ready before the training
2) Using the Learner’s manual as a guide input the exam into CPS directly
and display on the SmartBoard for teachers to view
3) Have teachers use their example exam they brought to the training
4) Allow them to practice entering an exam in the CPS system installed on
their computers
5) Walk around and answer any questions teachers may have

6) Have an ExamView test created before the training

7) Using the Learner’s manual as a guide display on the SmartBoard how to
input an ExamView test into CPS
8) Allow teachers to practice inputting an ExamView test into the CPS system
installed on their computers
9) Walk around and answer any questions teachers may have

10) Using the Learner’s manual as a guide open ExamView on your

computer and display for teachers to view. Explain to teachers how an
objective or standard can be linked to a question for analysis later when they
run reports
11) Congratulate the teachers on their good work

Objective 2: All participants will be able to use the CPS clickers for regular
classroom assessment and data analysis by demonstrating knowledge and ability to
use the clickers by “engaging” a sample exam participants created in the training
program and demonstrate to the instructor they can generate reports in the CPS
system.
