Administration Gopalganj district was established in 1984. Earlier it was a subdivision
under Faridpur district. Of the five upazilas of the district Gopalganj sadar is the largest
(391.35 sq km, it occupies 26.27% of the total area of the district) and TUNGIPARA is the
smallest upazila (127.25 sq km).

Historical events In 1846, the indigo planters of Kashiani upazila killed three rebellious
peasants. On 2 September 1971, an encounter between the freedom fighters and the Pak
army was held at Bhatiapara Wireless Station in which one freedom fighter was killed. On
5 October the freedom fighters launched an attack on the Bhatiapara Wireless Station and
killed 7 Pak soldiers. In October, an encounter was held between the freedom fighters and
the Pak army at a place on the bank of Tarail-Fukura river in which four freedom fighters
were killed; the Pak army also captured 4 freedom fighters and killed them at a slaughter
place in Gopalganj. In late October, 30 Pak soldiers were killed in an encounter with the
freedom fighters. In early December, 17 Pak soldiers were killed in another encounter with
the freedom fighters. Six Pak soldiers were killed in a three-day encounter with the
freedom fighters on 16, 17 and 18 December. On 19 December, 49 Pak soldiers
surrendered to the freedom fighters and the allied forces. Besides, during the WAR OF
LIBERATION encounters were held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at
Fukura, Bhatiapara and Rahuldanga in which more than one hundred Pak soldiers were
killed and so were 20 freedom fighters and 50 innocent villagers.

History of the War of Liberation On 14 May 1971, the Pak army killed about 150 innocent
persons at Kalabari area; they also set many houses of the area on fire. The Pak army
raided the Rajapur camp of the freedom fighters (Hemayet Bahini); however, the Pak army
was forced to retreat on the verge of counter attack. An encounter was held between the
freedom fighters and the Pak army on 14 July in which one freedom fighter was killed and
the commander of Hemayet Bahini, Hemayet Uddin was wounded. On 12 October the Pak
army brutally killed about 200 innocent persons at Kalabari. The Pak army was defeated in
a battle with the freedom fighters on 2 December. The freedom fighter captured 600 Pak
soldiers and 120 local razakars on 3 December, and on this day Kotalipara was liberated.

Historical events In 1368 BS a riot was held between the Hindus and the Muslims at
villages Karpara, Balakoir and Targram of Baultali union in which many people of both
communities were killed. Two freedom fighters were killed in an encounter with the Pak
army on 7 April 1971. The Pak army brutally killed 13 persons at village Paikkandi in
May. An encounter was held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at village
Shasabaria under Urafi union of the upazila in which 10 freedom fighters were killed.
Besides, the Pak army in collaboration with the local razakars, killed nearly 150 persons at

History of the War of Liberation On 19 May 1971, the Pak army raided the residence of
Bangabandhu sheikh Mujibur rahman at Tungipara. On the same day the Pak army killed
Sheikh Mithu, Arshad Ali, Torab Ali, Dhala Miah Sardar and Liku; they also set some
houses of Tungipara on fire. During the war of liberationthe local razakars established a
camp in the residence of Bangabandhu. On 11 July the freedom fighters (Hemayet Bahini)
launched an attack on the camp; the razakars were defeated and were driven away.

Historical events On 24 February 1952 a mourning procession and public meeting were
held in Muksudpur upazila in protest of police firing on the student and general public on
21 February 1952 demanding Bangla as the State Language. In 1966 police fired on the
anti Ayub procession in which school student Mahananda was killed. On 22 April 1971
two Pakistan fighter planes fired on Baniarchar in which five local residents were killed
and a motor launch was capsized. On 9 August the freedom fighters and the local people
jointly launched an attack on Muksudpur Police Station in which 84 members of police and
razakars were killed. On 12 October an encounter was held between the freedom fighters
and the Pak soldiers and razakars in which 22 Pak soldiers and razakars were killed.
Besides, between 12 and 15 December, 30 Pak soldiers and 10 razakars were killed in
encounters with the freedom fighters near the Dignagar Bridge; in these encounters three
freedom fighters were also killed.
