Vortec
Spray Nozzles for Evaporative Cooling
Spray nozzles atomize the liquid stream by high velocity compressed air to create
a range of 20 to 200 micron-size spray droplets. Droplet size and production is
not dependent on liquid pressure. The ultra-fine droplet-sized sprays accelerate
air-liquid interaction to facilitate effective cooling, and the smaller droplets
expose more surface area to increase the evaporation rate. Three types of spray
nozzles are offered: fogging, atomizing and humidifying. The fogging nozzle
produces a directed spray with droplet sizes of 20 to 60 microns, a flow rate
of 0 to 30 gal/hr and liquid viscosities up to 1100 cPs. The atomizing nozzle
produces a directed spray of 60 to 200 microns, a flow rate of 0 to 30 gal/hr with
liquid viscosity up to 1100 cPs. The humidifying nozzle produces a wide spray
with droplet sizes of 20 to 200 microns, a flow rate of 0 to 15 gal/hr, and liquid
viscosity up to 100 cPs.

Pond Overflow Fears?
Here’s how one petrochemical company used a green
technology to drop their pond level eight feet.

Evaporation ponds have proven themselves to be problematic for petrochemical

producers, power plants and manufacturing facilities of all kinds.
This pond is 15 feet deep and designed to hold 680,000 gallons of water but the
pond was falling seriously short in times of high production load. Sometimes, the plant
had unplanned shutdowns to prevent overflow into nearby land. This was a serious
cause of concern due to enormous losses in revenue and potential environmental
consequences.
The make-up water for the towers comes from on-site wells and is extremely
hard with a conductivity of 2000mS. The water was being chemically treated with
acids, biocides, and corrosion inhibitors. The towers were operating at two cycles of
concentration, with blow-down averaging 8500 gallons per day.
Spray nozzles were used to accelerate the evaporation process but were found to
be inadequate in this application. Management searched for an innovative solution. In February of 2017 the pond was nearly
overflowing. The existing chemical treatment

tubular reactors on a basin side loop, rather than in their process piping. The
controller continuously adjusts the electrolysis by examining 42 parameters every 6
milliseconds. It then sends an electric current from an anode to the cathode using
the water as a medium. The DC process spurs electrolysis in the water, separating
H+ and OH+ ions from their counterparts, achieving equilibrium while retaining the
minerals required to maintain proper PH balance. The rapidly formed scale is soft and
easy to clean out of the reactor chamber. The water leaving the reactors is in balance
and no longer seeks to deposit scale in the tower or process piping
and chiller.

With hydrogen ions being pulled from the chloride ions naturally present in the
make-up water, the reactor also generates measurable chlorine despite not adding
any chemicals. The biocide level is adjustable and disinfects the process water, killing
mold, algae, viruses and bacteria, including the pathogenic legionella.
The system start-up was in February of 2017 when the pond was nearly
overflowing, and the results were considerable. The cycles of conductivity were more
than doubled to 4.5, reducing blow down to 2000 gallons per day. Within a month of
operation, the water level dropped 8 feet and has remained very stable even through

Following system installations, the
building owners have experienced cost
savings through improved energy and
water efficiency. “There’s been fantastic
improvement in system performance,”
said Jablokov. “Engineering the right
cooler size has allowed us to maintain
an optimal 85 degree loop temp.” A technician receives diagnostic information from a control for an adaptive control

that connecting small air-conditioning units to the side

of the fan motor VFD enclosures — rather than using
ventilation fans — made a huge improvement in protecting
electronics from humid, dirty air.”
Initially, the owners were projected to save an average
of 15,338 kWh per month over the old evaporative coolers.
Those improvements would have equated to a 75 percent
savings in total energy use and cost after one year. It
also was projected that the facility owners would save an
average of 96,260 gal of water each month, resulting in a 24
percent savings in water use and cost after one year. When
factored together, the customer would save an estimated
total of $24,750 per year. These were the numbers — giving
credence to an investment in new technology — that won
the job for Parmiter’s recommendations.
Now, 50 months after completing the retrofit at the
facility, Parmiter learned from managers of the facility, who
have tracked energy/utility performance rigorously, that the
systems have saved almost $25,000/year in electrical costs
alone. PC

Multi-Wing’s Sickle profile is the answer for generating pressure with a low-noise fan.
The sickle blade’s swept design and thin trailing edge reduce pure tones in the sound
spectrum and decrease vortex shedding to generate low wake turbulence for a quieter
impeller. The sickle profile’s large chord length and overall surface area also combine
to generate greater pressure at lower speeds.

Sickle Fans reduce noise levels by up to 7 dBA in cooling towers, evaporators,
