Reading: This week we will developing ideas based on our reading of Number the Stars and
book club. We will determine and support themes and continue to interpret important
scenes as we read. Students will be taking a multiple choice comprehension quiz on
Chapters 1-8 of Number the Stars on Friday. If they have missed any days of read aloud
or just want to review the events in the story, they can listen to the story read aloud

Social Studies: In social studies, students will review the causes of colonial unrest and
exploring North Carolina’s leading role in the beginning of the Revolutionary War. They will
learn about the historic town of Halifax, North Carolina and the Halifax Reserves as an
initial step toward independence from England. Students will also learn about the role of
the North Carolina militia in winning the first American victory at Moore’s Creek
Bridge. Student assessment will be in the form of an in-class writing assignment. (Weeks
16-17)
Writing: Students will be writing about what they are learning about through their
reading during book clubs. Students will be encouraged to keep their writing grounded in
the text and add elaboration to support their thinking.
Science: We will begin looking at light and how light travels in a straight line
(reflect/refract/absorbed). We will also look at how light interacts with different media
(opaque, transparent, translucent). We will be conducting experiments to help students
see these different aspects. A study guide will be sent home on Friday (2/23) in
preparation for the Unit Test on Wednesday, February 28th.
