Careassonng SoloPlay™ Rules (Original game concept and design by Klaus-Jurgen Wrede, Hans im Gluck Verlags-GmbH © 2000-2005) Additional rules 2008 SoloPlay ™ (BGG User--GameRulesforOne) Introduction: The game Carcassonne was designed for 2-6 players. The SoloPlay™ rules have been designed to give a single player the opportunity to play a game with a similar level of challenge without significantly changing the multi-player rules. The following rules have been play-tested extensively to ensure that the game is balanced and is as true as possible to the original concepl.. Il is assumed that the player has a good knowledge of the original rules to be able to play this variant. You can play with the original game and/or any combination of the following expansions: the river, Traders and Builders and /or Inns and Cathedrals. Game Setup: 1. Remove either the starter tile from the original game or the spring tile from the river expansion and place in the center of the play area. Set aside the river or starter tile depending on which is being played. 2. Place all remaining tiles including any expansions noted that will be used into the draw bag or in stacks for selection as the game progresses. If playing with the river, use river placement rules before drawing from the bag. 3. Remove all pieces of one color including only those for the expansion(s) being played, placing one “follower” on the zero space of the scoring track. 4. You are ready to begin play. Notes before beginning play: 1. The play area will be limited to a variable area depending on which expansions will be in play. Note the differences in the “Land Sculpting Phase” section. 2. The rules of play change when the player expands the grid to 8 tiles in one direction and again when both directions extend to 8 tiles. Make note of the changes. 3. All pieces have their normal scoring opportunities (scale changed) and some offer new scoring possibilities. Having a good understanding of the scoring is important to succeeding in the SoloPlay variant of Carcassonne. Game Play: (2 playing phases and then final scoring) (Follower Placement Phase) 1. The player draws tiles just like in the regular game and decides when and who to place on the newly laid tile and to remove the follower when an item is completed (at least 3 tiles minimum in this phase). a. Changes to the regular play i, Followers can only be placed and/or returned until the game grid extends beyond 8 in one direction or to 8 tiles in both directions before a tile is drawn. See Scoring (Follower Placement Scoring) for the changes to tallying the completed items. Goal should be to have 7 active followers in the play area when the final phase begins. The player can place a follower on the tile which causes the grid to reach one of the limits. ii, A player must have at least one active follower in the play area on a road, castle, cloister and farm before the area can expand beyond the 8 x 8 boundaries. If a player is unable to place a tile without violating this placement limitation, the tile is considered an unplayable tile and will be scored against the player at games end. Set the tile aside. 2. 3 followers have alterations to their functions: a. Large Follower (Inns and Cathedrals expansion) — Can be used in place of a regular follower in an attempt to add 1 point per tile to the score of 1 castle or road. This addition applies to the shields and the goods in the castle (Traders and Builders expansion — 2 of each good x # of symbols). One follower must remain in supply until the large follower is retrieved from the playing area. i, Limitations: 1. The large follower can only be used once. 1of3 Intellectual Properties of SoloPlay'™! (BGG User GameRulesforOne) 2. The occupied castle cannot extend more than § tiles. There is no limit for the length of the road. 3. The large follower must be off of the play area before the grid is extended to 8 tiles in either direction to score the item. Otherwise, 2 (3 if a cathedral is present) points per tile of the item’s current value is deducted from the player's score and the large follower is immediately pulled off of the play area. The player may still place a regular follower at a later point on the item the large follower was pulled from as long as the land sculpting phase has not begun. 4, Strategy note: the alternative to taking the points loss is to create an unplayable tile. Itis possible that this may allow the player to score the item the large follower is on and recoup the point loss for the unplayable tile. will now be referred to as the Architect. I will provide an additional scoring b. Builder opportunity. If the castle or road it is on is 10 tiles or larger, the player earns 5 or 7 poinls respectively. i. Limitations: 1. The architect cannot be placed with the last tile to close a castle/road. 2. The architect must be placed on any road or castle that already has a follower on it. 3. The architect must be placed before the play area extends to 8 liles in either direction before a tile is drawn. 4. Once placed, the architect remains_on the board until game's end. If the castle/road is not completed or large enough, the architect has no effect on the scoring, c. Pig - It will offer an additional scoring opportunity. By enclosing the pig within a circle of roads (no crossings etc.) player will score the # of tiles / 2 (rounded down) in points. (Pig Pen Scoring) i. Limitations: 1. The pig must be placed separate from the farmer on a tile that contains a road that does not connect to a crossing, cloister, castle etc. 2. The pig cannot be placed with the last tile of the completed road(pen). 3. The pig can be retrieved and replayed only until the play area extends to 8 tiles in cither direction or 9 in one direction before a tile is drawn, Ifa tile does not fit in any way to the current layout, it is deemed unplayable and is set aside till games end. A player can opt to make a tile unplayable if it will serve a greater purpose. Play continues normally until the player decides to extend the play area to 8 x 8 or to 9 in one direction. This is considered by using the top to the bottommost and left to rightmost tiles. The 8 x 8 does not have to be completely filled. It is to the player's advantage to delay this as long as reasonably possible. (Land Sculpting Phase) - Follower placement has ended and all workers are “frozen” in their positions until games end. 1. The player can now only place tiles in an attempt to maximize the current followers and to earn the special scoring bonuses as noted in the scoring section. 2. The player still collects goods if castles are completed just like during the previous phase. 3. To maximize the score, the player must try to fill out the play area prioritizing the filling out of the missing, interior tiles. 4. Playing area restrictions: 8 x 9 Carcassonne base game only 9x 9 Carcassonne with the River 9 x 9 Carcassonne with Inns and Catherdrals or Traders and Builders only 10 x 9 Carcassonne with the River and with Inns and Catherdrals or Traders and Builders only 10 x 10 Carcassonne with Inns and Catherdrals and Traders and Builders with or without the River expansion. paooe Game End Condition - The player can end the contest when there are no more than 4 open spaces in the playing area. The open spaces can be within or on the edge of the play area. It is up to player to decide when to end the contest. The game must end when the play area is completely filled. The greatest reward is for filling out the grid completely but if the player draws unplayable tiles, it can cost the player many points. 20f3 Intellectual Properties of SoloPlay™! (BGG User GameRulesforOne) Scoring: 1. Grid completion award: 10 points for a completed 10 x 10 grid which also eliminates 5 of the unplayable tiles. Example: 6 unplayable tiles and a completed grid = 10 points and 1 unplayable tile. 2. Unplayable tile bonuses/penalty: (after completed grid award is subtracted) a. +20 points for no unplayable tiles b. +10 points for one c. +5 points for two d._ No points for three Subtract 2 points for every tile over 3 3, Sinkhole penalty: Subtract 4 points for every open space within the framework of the play area (empty space not on the play area border). Tile placing Awards: (score this category before retrieving the followers from the play area) a. +10 points for 5 or more completed cloisters b. +2 points for every completed castle with 4 or more tiles and not currently occupied by a follower. 5. Road building awards: a. +1 point for every continuous road (no crossings etc. between) that connects 2 completed castles or a castle with a cloister. b. +2 points for building 2 roads, 6 tiles or more in length or; ¢. +7 points for building 3 roads, 6 tiles or more in length or; d. +15 points for building 4 or more roads, 6 tiles or more in length. 6. Follower placement scoring: (also done during the placement phase of the game), having an Inn or Cathediral on the respective item adds 1 to the scored value per tile before follower placement ends only. a. +1 point for every tile in a completed castle b. +1 point for every shield in a completed castle ¢. +1 point for every tile in a completed road d. +2 points for every “farmed” castle regardless of size e. 45 points for every completed cloister 7. Follower placement penalty: (Inns or cathedrals add to the penalty instead of making the value zero) a. All incomplete items are scored against (subtracted from) the player in the same manner, 8. Trader goods: (Traders and Builders expansion - if a good runs out a monopoly has been obtained) a. Subtract 10 points for collecting 3 or less of all types of goods b. 45 points for the majority of 2 goods (majorities are 3 ribbon, 4 wheat and 5 barrels) ¢. +10 points for the majority of all 3 goods d. +10 additional points for a monopoly in each type of good(s) (Maximum = 30 points) 9. Pig pen: (Traders and Builders expansion) a. #tiles / 2 (rounded down) for having the pig completely surrounded by a continuous road. 10. Architect bonus: (Traders and Builders expansion) a. +5 points for having a builder within a castle that is 10 tiles or larger b. #7 points for having a builder on a road that is 10 tiles or longer Rating the game: in all cases using the River expansion is optional and does not affect the rating, 1, 100 (level 1 victory) / 110 (level 2 victory) / 120 (level 3 victory) - base game 2. 120 (level 1 victory) / 135 (level 2 victory) / 150 (level 3 victory) ~ base game + Inns and Cathedrals (I&eC) 3. 130 (level 1 victory) / 145 (level 2 victory) / 160 (level 3 victory) — base game + Traders and Builders (T8&B) 4, 150 (level 1 victory) / 165 (level 2 victory) / 180 (level 3 victory) — base game + 1&C and T&B Strategy Session: 1. “It is important to score well while you can place and retrieve your followers. Once the “grid” extends 8 tiles in both directions or 9 in one direction, no followers can be retrieved or scored until game's end. 2. Once in the land sculpting phase, focus on the farmer, architect and other scoring possibilities. These will be needed to achieve the highest game ratings. Knowing the tile distribution is very helpful. Be careful not to be too greedy near the end in trying to fill the grid. A significant point loss can be created by trying to eek out just a few more points. 4. The River expansion makes the game more challenging to achieve the same level victory scores. 3 0f3 Intellectual Properties of SoloPlay™!
