Postsecondary
Institutions:
Scholarships & Bursaries
At this point in the school year, students
have applied to universities, colleges,
and trade or technical schools. You are
now waiting to hear whether you have
been granted admission to your school
of choice. In the meantime, it is
important that you know about the
awards, scholarships, and bursaries that
may be offered at the schools you have
applied to.
The cost of postsecondary education can
add up! Not only do you pay for tuition,
but you also must pay for textbooks,
meal plans, additional fees, etc. The
yearly cost of attending university (if
not living at home) can cost up to
$20,000!
To help first-year students cover the
costs of postsecondary education,
colleges and universities provide non-
repayable (money you don’t have to pay
back) financial assistance to their
incoming students in the form
of scholarships, bursaries, and other
awards. Knowing what is potentially
available to you may help in the
decision-making process of which
school you should attend!
#1. Entrance scholarships: Generally,
students are automatically considered
for these awards on the basis of their
academic average when they apply to
the school. You do not have to apply for
these scholarships.
#2. Major admissions / prestigious
awards: Students apply for these
awards in separate applications, or with
one single application. They may need
to submit a Student Profile. These
awards are given based mainly on
academic excellence. Leadership,
community involvement, financial need,
or other factors may also be considered.
And just a tip: even if you haven’t
received an offer of admission yet, you
can still apply for the scholarships
offered there. Many of the deadline
dates for these scholarships are early in
the year so don’t miss out on potential
financial aid. Check application
deadlines!
#3. Bursaries / Grants: This type of
financial assistance is awarded based
mainly on a student’s financial need;
there may be other considerations as
well. You will most likely be asked to
submit detailed financial information
that will most likely include your
parents’ financial information. You may
have to fill out a student profile. Check
application deadlines!
#4. Other awards: Most universities
and colleges maintain a list of other
internal, and external awards (awards
given by outside organizations and
companies). These awards are listed on
the school’s website, e.g., Queen’s
University External Awards, or they
may have a Scholarship Sorter, e.g.
University of Toronto Scholarship
Sorter, on the website. It is up to you to
research the awards individually.
**Offer of Admission: When you
receive an Offer of Admission, you will
receive information on bursaries and
scholarships offered at the school, as
well as any wards (and the amount of
award) you will receive if you accept
their offer. Read your Offer of Who you are

National exchange program for youth,
ages 16 & 17; opportunity to improve

Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR) Canadian National Brain Bee
Competition for high school students,
Grades 9-12, at McMaster University in
Hamilton Saturday, May 26. Students
are tested on their knowledge about the
brain and neuroscience research. The
competitors are champions who have
already won their local brain bee
competition (check website for local
competitions). Awards: $1500 for 1st
place, $1000 for 2nd place, and $500 for
3rd place). The 2017 champion will travel
to Berlin, Germany, for the International
Brain Bee World Championship.
