INTRODUCTION
In this assignment, I will try to design a suitable luminaire layout for a 16m x 12m x 3.5m office space.
The desired lux level is 500 lux and the luminaire type is a twin 36watt 3612RPS.
Knowing this information, I will use the lumen method to calculate the number of fittings required.
In the second part of the assignment I will calculate the annual cost of electrical energy consumption to
illuminate the room considering the unit cost per Kwh from the utility supplier.
I will also look at ways to reduce the installed loading/m² value in the office which may also help to
reduce energy costs.

LIGHTING CALCULATIONS
𝐼𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 × 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎
Luminous Flux required =
𝑈.𝐹 ×𝑀𝐹
500𝑙𝑢𝑥(16×12)
= 𝑈.𝐹×𝑀𝐹
UF reflectance’s are 70% for the ceiling, 50% for the floor and 20% for the walls.
𝑙×𝑤
Therefore, the room index =
(𝑙+𝑤)ℎ
16×12
= (0.8 is the working plane)
(16+12)(3.5−0.8)
= 2.53
= 0.32
500𝑙𝑢𝑥(16×12)
φ = = 441176.47 Lumens
0.68×0.32

SPACING
The 70 light fittings can be divided into 10 rows with 7 columns for even spacing throughout the office.
16𝑚 12𝑚
Spacing (S) = 1.6𝑚 = 1.71𝑚

The drawing below shows the luminaire layout for the general office. Measurements are in millimeters
to help scale the drawing in autocade.

DIALUX
Using dialux software it is easier to see how the lighting will physically look within the office. The
spacing calculations seem to provide an even spread of light which can be seen in the diagrams below.

From the information provided the lamps operate for 2000 hours per annum. From earlier calculations,
there are 140 lamps and there is a gear loss of 2 watts/lamp. This implies that 280 watts per annum is
consumed due to the gear losses.
There are 70 luminaires required to light the room and each fitting is rated at 72 watts because they
are a twin fitting.
Therefore, 72 x 70 = 5040watts

The total installed load for the luminaries is 5.32kW and the size of the room is 192m², therefore the
installed load per meter squared is
5320𝑤
= 28w/m²
192𝑚²
This would be quite high for a standard office, If there were some daylight sensors fitted as part of the
lighting control system it may help to lower the installed load per meter squared during daytime hours.

CONCLUSION
The lumen method helped to divide the lighting into even rows and columns from which a simple plan
could be drawn. The spacing factor was import as it prevents scalloping and lighting being directed
where it is not required.
The dialux software confirmed that the lights were evenly spaced and that there was little or no
scalloping taking place.
The watt/m² method was the least effective method for calculating the lighting distribution. It does not
take all the variables into account in the same way that the lumen method or Dialux do.
