UNIT 1 WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE Hadi Has A Hat

Focus: Listening and Speaking

Learning Standard(s): 1.1.3, 1.1.4 {SK & SJK}


By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:
Objective(s): i. talk about pictures with guidance;
ii. sound out the phoneme /h/ correctly; and
iii. listen to and sing a song with guidance.

Time: 30/60 minutes

Teaching Aid(s): picture cards

Cross Curricular Element(s): Contextual Learning, Multiple Intelligences - Musical

Set Induction:
a. Show the picture of Hadi with a hat. (Appendix 1) MI- Musical
b. Pupils talk about the picture. Prompt pupils by asking questions.
c. Repeat for pictures 2 and 3 one at a time. (Appendix 1)

Step 1:
a. Introduce the phoneme /h/ by showing the action.
 Place your palm in front of your mouth.
c. Laugh haha and say /h/ without the schwa [sound /er/]
d. Demonstrate how to sound it out:
 When you make the sound /h/, you mouth is open a little.
 You push air out of your mouth to whisper /h//h/ /h/.
 You can stretch the sound /h…/. Ask pupils to observe
e. Pupils do the action and say /h/. you. Do it a few times
f. Pupils say /h/ is for ‘h’. to different groups.

Step 2:
Contextual
a. Pre-teach vocabulary (Appendix 3)
 Show a hat. Learning

 Say aloud /h//h/ ‘hat’


 Pupils to repeat after teacher.
b. Follow the same procedure for these: happy Hadi, hill, hops, house
c. Sing the song. (Appendix 2)
d. Repeat the song with actions.
e. Pupils sing and do the actions.

Step 3:
a. Organise pupils into groups.
b. Place all the 3 picture cards in the centre of each group. Optional:
c. Explain and demonstrate how the game is played. reward the pupil(s)
 Call out a word and pupils look for the relevant picture with a happy smiley)
 Pupil holds up and identify the picture.
 The pupil with the most pictures wins.

Consolidation:
a. Sing the song again.
b. Pupils sing the song with actions.
c. Pupils sound out the phoneme /h/ again.

ii. read and match words beginning with /h/ correctly.

Prepare word cards:
a. Sing the song ‘Hadi has a hat ‘ again.

b. Show a picture card and get pupils to say the word. (Appendix 3)

Step 1:

a. Show the word card and get pupils to repeat.


b. Pupils sound out the phoneme /h/ followed by the word.
(Do one at a time for all the pictures – display the picture cards with the
corresponding words on the board.)

Step 2:
a. Organise the pupils into two groups. Number the groups as 1 and 2.
b. Distribute word cards and picture cards (5 of each) to each group.
c. Explain and demonstrate how the activity is carried out. Contextual
 Group 1 shows a picture. Learning
 Group 2 looks for the matching word.
 Pupils sound out the phoneme/h/ followed by the word.

Step 3:
a. Put up the song chart on the board.
b. Read in chunks and pupils repeat: (e.g. Hadi has/a hat) Consolidation:

c. Organise pupils into two groups.

Consolidation:
a. Match pictures to word cards. Pupils read the words aloud:
Hadi, hill, happy, hop (Appendix 3)
b. Play the ‘Sound Search’ game. (Appendix 5)
c. Explain and demonstrate how the game is played.
 Work in groups.
 Distribute one ‘Search the Sound’ ‘wheel and 5 clothe pegs to each group.
 Pupils pick a word card. Sound the phoneme /h/ and read the word aloud.
 Pupils peg the word card to the correct picture.

Consolidation: (Optional)
a. Organise the pupils into groups of three.
b. Explain how the game is played.
c. Play the game ‘Pelmanism’
 Distribute all the 10 word cards and picture cards to each group.
 Ask the pupils to place all the cards face down separately.
(All the picture cards on one side and the word cards on the other side)
 Pupils take turns to flip a picture card and say aloud the word.
 The same pupil has to look for the correct word card.
 Should the pupils get the correct word, she/he keeps the cards.
 Otherwise the two cards will be placed back again.
 The pupil with the most cards will be the winner.
