DEFINE SOCIAL WORK PROFESSION

Social work profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance
their individual and collective well-being. It aims to help people develop their skills and their ability to
use their own resources and that of the community to resolve problems.

LIST AND DISCRIBE VALUES OF SOCIAL WORK

Values are beliefs, presences or assumptions about what is desirable or good for men .The mission of
social work profession is rooted in a set of co-values. The values are the foundation of social work
unique purpose and perspective. These values include;

SERVICE

Social workers primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems. Social workers
alleviate services to others above self-interest, social workers draw on their knowledge, values and skills
to help people in need and address social problems.

SOCILA INJUSTICE

Social workers challenge social injustice. They must pursue social change particularly with and or behalf
of vulnerable and apprised individuals and groups of people. Social workers strive to ensure equality of
opportunity, access to needed information, services, resources and meaningful participation in decision
making for all people.

DIGNITY AND WORTH OF THE PERSON

Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of person. Social workers treat each other person
in a caring and respectful fashion mindful of individual differences, unethical and ethical diversity .social
workers promote clients socially responsible self-determination.

IMPORTANCE OF HUMANRELATIONSHIPS

Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships. social workers understand that
relationships between and among people are important vehicle for change .thus seek to strengthen
relationships among people in purposeful effort to promote ,restore and enhance well-being of
individuals ,families ,social groups ,organizations and communities.
INTERGRITY

Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner. Social workers are continually aware of professions
mission, values, ethical principles and ethical standards thus practice in a manner consistent and
responsible and promote ethical practices on the part of organizations with which they are affiliated.

COMPETENCE

Social workers practice within their areas of competence and develop and enhance their professional
expects .social workers should aspire to contribute to the knowledge based on the profession.

LIST AND DISCRIBE ETHICAL STANDARDS

The following ethical standards are relevant to the professional activities of all
social workers.

(1) Social workers ‘ethical responsibilities to clients

Commitment to clients; social workers’ primary responsibility is to promote the


well-being of clients.
Informed consent; social workers’ should provide services to clients only in the
context of professional relationship based, when appropriate on valid informed
consent.

(2) Social workers’ ethical responsibilities to colleagues

Respect; social workers’ should treat colleagues with respect and should
represent accurately and fairly the qualification, views and obligations
colleagues.
Sexual harassment; social workers should not sexually harass supervisors,
students, trainers, or colleagues

(3) Social workers’ ethical responsibilities in practice settings

Professional social work practice is distinctive from other helping professions in its approach of
assisting clients to function optimally within their environments. The person-in-environment
approach is central to social work practice. Through this perspective, professional social workers
are uniquely trained to help clients maximize the opportunity for change in themselves and/or
their situations. The term client encompasses individuals, families, groups, organizations, and
communities.

Social work is distinctive also for its professional values and ethics, appreciation for human
diversity, emphasis on social and economic justice, understanding of social welfare policy and
services, and strong foundation in field education.

Its unique approach to problem-solving and interventions is evidenced in direct clinical practice,
policy planning and administration; community-level and state-level services; private and public
sectors; and teaching, research, and scholarship.
