Chillers / Integrated HVAC Systems - 1
Carrier UK
Our integrated offering brings together a complete range of high
performance, energy efficient products and building controls, backed by
nationwide service and maintenance and spares support.
30XWV Variable Speed Screw Chillers
The latest development of the established 30XW range, the 30XWV
variable speed screw compressor chillers offer significantly enhanced part
load efficiency. Typical ESEER levels are >9.0 and annual average system
efficiencies ~10.
23XRV Tri-Rotor Variable Speed Screw Chillers
The unique tri-rotor design of the 23XRV provides a more balanced
compression process that imposes much lower loads on the compressor
bearings. This allows significantly reduced rotor clearances for improved
efficiency and results in an L10 design life for the compressor bearings of
more than 500,000 hours. The 23XRV can deliver average annual system
efficiencies approaching 11 with the resilience and robustness inherent in
screw compressor technology.
The Next Generation of AquaForce®
Carrier has been working over the past years on selecting the right
refrigerant for the future and has now taken the lead in introducing the next
generation of refrigerants on screw units: PUREtec™. With PUREtec™,
Carrier offers a range of new customised solutions using a refrigerant with
zero impact on the ozone layer and nearly zero global warming potential:
HFO-R1234ze.
Air-cooled screw compressor chillers: 30XA-ZE and 30XAV-ZE.
Water-sourced screw compressor chillers and heat pumps: 30XWP-
ZE, 30XW-ZE, 30XWHP/HV-ZE and 61XWH-ZE.
All the reliability, efficiency, adaptability of the AquaForce® range combined
with PUREtec™ refrigerant HFO-R1234ze.
System SEER
The Part L Building Services Compliance Guides acknowledges that the
SEER method of representing chiller efficiency should only be considered
as an approximation. Using our Chiller System Optimiser modelling tool,
Carrier has now developed a method of predicting chiller system efficiencies
that matches much more closely the specifics of the proposed installation.
This new approach considers all the factors that can influence actual chiller
system performance, including:
• Number of chillers
• Size of each chiller
• EER of all chillers at every combination of load & operating condition
• Control sequence for the chillers
• Load profile of the building
• Hours of operation
• Local weather conditions
The System SEER approach not only produces predictions of chiller system
efficiency that are much more representative of reality, but also figures that
can be significantly higher than those produced by a simple individual chiller
SEER analysis. Improvements in annual average chiller efficiency ratings
of 20-30% are typical, significantly reducing the electrical consumption and
carbon emissions attributed to the cooling plant, with substantial benefits
for the whole building’s carbon profile.

Evaporative Cooling
Evaporative cooling is a process that exploits the evaporation of water to
cool the air: the change in state from liquid to vapour in fact absorbs energy
from the air, which consequently is cooled.
Very low energy consumption means evaporative cooling systems are
environmentally-friendly, energy saving solutions: 100 kg/h of evaporated
water absorbs around 69 kW of heat from the air, for a power consumption
of less than 1 kW.
Humidification
Humidification is the art of efficiently increasing the humidity level of air.
The right level of humidity is fundamental for many applications and
processes and for the well-being of humans and animals.
Isothermal and Adiabatic humidification systems control the level of
humidity, adding moisture to the air when the humidity level decreases below
a desired set point.
Water Treatment
Reverse osmosis is a technique in which the water being purified is pumped
at high pressure and forced through a semi-permeable membrane with pores
smaller than 0.001 µm in diameter: the majority of the dissolved ions are
filtered by the membrane, thus producing relatively pure water.
The CAREL reverse osmosis water treatment systems are designed for use
with heaterSteam, gaSteam, humiFog, MC multizone, humiSonic and
chillBooster systems.

R32 Systems
Daikin UK introduced the first R32-based heat pump systems in Europe
– giving domestic air conditioning a foretaste of next-generation
refrigerants.
R32 is Daikin’s preferred refrigerant to meet next generation legislative
and environmental requirements because of its superior energy efficiency
and low global warming potential.
R32 already makes up 50% of R410A refrigerant, but R32 on its own has
a GWP of 675, compared to R410A’s 2,088.
The greater energy efficiency of R32 results in a lower refrigerant charge
and the potential to manufacture smaller units. Therefore, it is also easier
to re-use and recycle.
Daikin introduced the world’s first R32 domestic air conditioners in Japan
in 2012 and has already sold more than 4 million systems in that market.
Installation of R32 systems is similar to R410A systems, however slightly
different equipment is required. Daikin can advise on training
requirements.
The full range of R410A products remains available alongside the newer
technology.
Incentivised
Heat pumps are recognised as renewable by the Government and are
therefore eligible to receive regular quarterly payments from the
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
Homeowners can receive up to seven years of payments whilst
commercial installations are eligible for up to 20 years of RHI payments.
Commercial Heating
Designed specifically for use in commercial properties, our larger
renewable Ecodan products (CAHV and CRHV) use proven heat pump
technology to deliver effective, low carbon heating to provide a simple
solution that can replace traditional systems.
Heating accounts for more than half of the total energy consumed by an
average commercial property, so this is the obvious area to target to
make the required difference.
The Ecodan CAHV air source heat pump is already used in schools and
commercial premises such as showrooms to provide reliable renewable
heating. It is also acting as a community heating system for 24 homeless
flats in London and is being specified in more projects as the full potential
of the product’s adaptability is realised.

Mixing Ventilation
The Breathing Buildings philosophy of natural ventilation stems from
pioneering research at Cambridge University and the ground-breaking
E-Stack® natural ventilation system. The research at Cambridge
identified a paradox with ventilation – many naturally ventilated buildings
were found to use more energy than mechanically ventilated ones! This
was solved by developing a new approach to natural ventilation which is
now completely changing the industry.
Energy Efficiency
At 800 kWh/m², the catering industry is one of the most energy consuming
commercial activities throughout Europe. It makes energy performance
the most important aspect of the “High Performance Kitchen” concept.
Safety
Many restaurants today do not re-open after a major safety incident.
Operators or owners not only have to deal with the interruption of
business, but also face up to their responsibilities to the building’s other
tenants, customers, third parties, or associated negative publicity.
Safety should be de facto a major concern for all professional kitchens.
Controlled Emissions
It is highly likely that future legislation may well stipulate that “fresh” air
used for any process must be discharged back into the atmosphere at
the same quality as that at which it was taken in. This will represent a
real challenge for catering establishments in dense urban areas.
These are just few of the challenges Halton engineers are used to dealing
with in their daily design work. Just let us guide you to the way of High
Performance Kitchens!

HERO Plant
A recent launch from Danfoss is their new fan-coil unit assembly: HERO
Plant. It is a pre-fabricated flushing bypass arrangement for larger plant
devices such as air handling units, heat exchangers and heater batteries.
It combines isolation, drain strain and a flushing bypass assembly with
Danfoss’ AB-QM pressure independent control valve (PICV) to create a
ready-to-install solution that saves time on site and eliminates the need
for ‘hot works’ permits and the associated site safety concerns.
Available in DN15-150, the Danfoss HERO Plant is factory built under
strict quality control conditions and supplied pressure tested to PED
(Pressure Equipment Directive) standard. At the heart of the HERO Plant
is the PICV which provides balance at full or partial loads whilst working
with a variety of Danfoss actuators to optimise heating and cooling
comfort and increase energy savings for building owners and occupants.
Among the key design features of the HERO Plant are flow and return
mounted drains for flushing and quick drain-downs, a strainer to prevent
plant performance deterioration and components within the assembly that
are installed to enable rotation should they clash with other pipework.
Creating optimal hydronic balance, simplifying flush and allowing
measurement of water flow, the Danfoss HERO plant is a unique concept
making life much easier.
NovoCon®
Danfoss is leading a revolution in commercial heating and cooling control
with the launch of the NovoCon® digital actuator. This multi-functional
actuator now makes it possible to connect an HVAC system to the Building
Management System (BMS) via Fieldbus – adding advanced levels of
hydronic balancing and control, whilst also saving valuable time on site.
The NovoCon® is a 4-in-one solution which combines a digital actuator,
flow indicator, BMS communication device and data logger.
Designed for use with the Danfoss AB-QM pressure independent
balancing and control valve (PICV), NovoCon® S simplifies the installation
and commissioning process and gives users access to unique data for
maintenance purposes. It also offers remote control of the heating and
cooling system from a computer, for example, the ability to flush hundreds
of valves with a single mouse click.
Motor Independency
The same VLT® frequency converter can be used to control induction,
permanent magnet and high efficiency synchronous reluctance motors.
What is more, these are easy and fast to commission as Danfoss Drives
Automatic Motor Adaption requires only motor nameplate data and 2.7
seconds to measure the motor, cables and full installation characteristics
to optimise the parameters; truly matching the drive to its load. The motor
will then operate at the highest possible efficiency. One VLT® for all motors.
Installers now benefit from freedom of choice of motor technology (Motor
Independency) and rapid commissioning utilising Danfoss Drives
platforms.
Users benefit from the correct choice of motor technology for the
application with the lowest possible cost of ownership, with a user friendly
single drive platform throughout the plant room.
Danfoss Drives are not only used in prestigious buildings such as the
Shard and the Gherkin in London, they are also in many other buildings.

About Waterdrop
Partners interested in getting involved must create an account with
buildings.xylem.com which also hosts a dedicated portal where
participants can track and collect water drops, and learn more about the
program plus upcoming activities.
Water drops (i.e. loyalty points) are earned by interacting with Xylem in
one or more of three ways:
• Learning about our products, services or tools by attending an online
course (1 water drop per chapter) or in-person training (30 water drops)
• Selecting Xylem products by having an active account for the
company’s selection software – Xylect (20 water drops)
• Specifying Xylem products into a project (20 water drops per
specification sent in)
Water drops collected from all participants define the number of water
towers that are built each year. Every drop earned is also an entry to win
a Waterdrop volunteer trip. This way, all future water towers donated from
the program will be built by Waterdrop members.
“There is no other loyalty program offered today that gives participants the
chance to make a lasting positive impact, the way Waterdrop does” says
Duncan Lewis, MD for Xylem UK & Ireland. “The benefits of getting
involved are exponential; the more our partners engage with us, the more
lives we can change together.”
The program transcends anything of its kind and creates an opportunity
that few companies can claim.
“Waterdrop is setting a new standard in the industry. It highlights our
commitment to providing global access to clean water and serves as a
bridge to Xylem Watermark, empowering our business partners to address
water issues worldwide” Duncan added.

Option 1:
CAM-C System: floor level supply air, floor level
return air
The CAM-C system makes use of the raised floor void for the distribution
and return of air. CAM-C down flow units are located throughout the office
space to serve each zone and provide conditioned air locally to suit the
requirements of the space. Within the floor void, flexible baffle material
segregates zones into supply and return plena. A Constant or Variable
Air Volume system operating at variable temperature supply using our
high capacity terminals for maximum free cooling. This option is most
suited to refurbishments with limited headroom or achieving height savings
in new builds.
Option 2:
CAM-V System: floor level supply air, high level
return air
The CAM-V system makes use of the raised floor void for the distribution
of supply air and draw spent return air back at high level, either within the
space or via a return air plenum. CAM-V down flow units are located
throughout the office space to serve each zone and provide conditioned
air locally to suit the requirements of the space. A Variable Air Volume
system operating at variable temperature supply using our high capacity
terminals for maximum free cooling. This option is most suitable for space
that has a high rate of churn. Reconfiguration of workspace is fast and
easy as the return air is high level and there is no division of the plenum.

Blower Units
Our new blower units distribute minute droplets of water into the room, right where it is needed. The powerful
air flow created by the fans means the droplets evaporate instantly in the air, in all temperature and humidity
conditions. Blower unit features:
• Infinite Combinations: Distribution of atomised water either single direction or bi-directional blower units, from
2 to 8 nozzles, available in sizes 1.45, 2.8 and 4 l/h.
• Simple to Install: Supplied already assembled, pre-wired and tested. No additional wiring required for control
of the solenoid valves. The fastening systems ensure quick and easy installation.
• Easy Positioning: Ceiling-mounted, ceiling suspended or wall-mounted, to provide optimum distribution and
humidity control right where it is needed.
Connectivity
Integration with Building Management Systems via the BACnet and Modbus protocols available on the Ethernet and serial ports.
Wireless Sensors for more precise humidity or temperature control in large or complex spaces, Start Up Wizard for easy commissioning and set up, USB
Port, Web Server access from a PC or mobile device, tERA Ready for monitoring and controlling over a remote connection.
Water Treatment
CAREL has developed reverse osmosis water treatment systems, designed especially for use with its humidifiers.
Demineralised water is fundamental in room applications as filtering minerals and bacteria through the membrane guarantees maximum hygiene. Moreover,
using demineralised water minimises maintenance requirements on the unit due to deposits, and prevents salts from building up on surfaces inside the
room following evaporation of the droplets.
The system is part of Daikin’s Bluevolution range, featuring the lower global
warming potential refrigerant R32.
“For us, it is all about the customer experience” says Paul Blake. “It is the
only way you can achieve on the high street – if you cannot win them over
in the showroom, you will lose them to the internet.”
“The old system had become quite noisy, so we had to switch it off every
time we did an audio demonstration. That was not good for the customer
experience. Without air conditioning, the temperature inside the shop could
reach an unbearable 40°C in high summer.”
As part of the fit-out for the new store, a Daikin R22 split system – then
state-of-the-art technology – was installed.
“As it was the first of its type, a Daikin engineer was on site the following
day to check the installation and formally commission the system.”
“We had no hesitation in staying with Daikin for the new system. With R32
being the current front-runner in refrigerants, we are confident that we are
future-proofed for most – if not all – of the next 20 years.”
Daikin’s R32 Bluevolution range includes Sky Air and Split systems and
offers future-proof and affordable air conditioning solutions. These are
quick and easy to install – with reduced leak-check requirements and the
latest technology.
The new range provides the highest Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
(SEER) and Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) ratings, offering
improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Dynamic Set Point (DSP) is a free cooling CW HVAC control solution that is weather compensated and IT load compensated, automatically optimising
the chilled water outlet temperature, maximising energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint by ensuring the highest amount of free cooling is achieved
all year round. The standard DSP offering consists of one external chiller connected to two internal cooling units. This can consist of varying cooling
load outputs depending on your load requirements: We offer 100kW, 250kW or 375kW chiller capacity steps with internal CRAC unit steps of 50kW,
125kW and 187.5kW.
Larger solutions can also be provided with the option for communicating between multiple large chillers. We have raised the bar in traditional data centre
CW CRAC free cooling methods, increasing efficiency.
• A new chiller control algorithm has been developed, affording maximum efficiency across the widest spectrum of operating conditions.
• DSP not only looks at raising CHW temperatures but also looks at the efficiency operating characteristics of each on CRAC unit board compressor,
guaranteeing that each compressor works at its peak performance as opposed to other systems whereby each compressor is loaded up once the
full load is reached per circuit.
• We are able to provide maximum free cooling, by raising and modulating our chilled water outlet temperatures up to 30°C (leaving water temperature)
using specially developed compressors.
• We have specifically redesigned the CRAC unit water coils to cater for Part Load scenarios, overcoming any Laminar flow issues found in some other
units installed in this application, not commonly recognised.
• Part or low load capability enables us to fully maximise the potential of the resilience designed into the system. DSP is aimed at reducing your Carbon
Footprint, allowing flexibility with your build out programs and load profiles. Our system follows a ‘plug and play’ philosophy, allowing modules to be
added as and when the client IT loads increase.
With pPUE 1.074 figures recorded DSP is not only modular, scalable and highly resilient, it probably is the most energy efficient chilled water system
currently on the market.

Commercial Heating
Designed specifically for use in commercial properties, our larger
renewable Ecodan products (CAHV and CRHV) use proven heat pump
technology to deliver effective low carbon heating, providing a simple
solution that can replace traditional systems.
Heating accounts for more than half of the total energy consumed by an
average commercial property, so this is the obvious area to target to make
the required difference.
The products are now proving themselves in schools, offices, showrooms,
in farming and in almost any situation calling for reliable, renewable
heating.
R22 Replacement
Both the City Multi and Mr Slim ranges of air conditioning systems offer the
ability to replace and update antiquated R22 models often using existing
pipework to allow replacement in days rather than weeks.
With both heat pump and heat recovery versions available, the Replace
range allows older, less efficient air conditioning systems to be upgraded
to some of the most efficient units available on the market.
The more recent index used in the UK is the SEER which follows the same calculation method as ESEER, however can look at more localised ambient
weather data which for the UK can offer lower average ambient temperatures when compared with the ESEER. Also building bespoke part load data, if
known, can be used in the SEER calculation. With both potential reduction in ambient and change in load profile leads to a more tailored SEER calculation
and higher SEER result for your building, but as it is not a fixed set of conditions it makes comparing two different chiller efficiencies extremely difficult. The
potential confusion in the market will be with the new SEER (EN14825) which is a benchmark figure as dedicated by a new calculation method.
The new SEER calculation is important as this is the benchmark figure used in definition of Ecodesign Lot 21 for cooling only chillers. Lot 21 is the critical
minimum design efficiency legislation that all chillers will have to meet in order to be sold in the European market. Ecodesign comes into force on the 1st
January 2018 and sets out minimum chiller efficiency targets the requirements to be met and a tiered implementation structure.
Why is Ecodesign – Lot 21 Important for the Market? What Does it Mean for Different Chillers?
Ecodesign is in force for all chillers sold into the EU from the 1st January 2018. Any chiller not meeting the Tier 1 requirements by this date will not be able
to be supplied to the market. It is important for 3 main aspects:
1 HVAC equipment suppliers need to ensure that any chillers supplied meet these standards and have a duty to inform the market to of the new
requirements and design based around the standards.
2 Consulting engineers and designers need to ensure that all design works from 2018 & 2021 onwards, as design based on chillers meeting these
minimum efficiency standards.
3 Contractors will need to ensure that any procurement of equipment that is to be shipped to site after the enforcement dates will meet the standard.
The Ecodesign will gradually eliminate low efficiency products from the market whilst driving manufacturers to enhance existing product ranges to meet the
upcoming benchmarks. The solution that will be at the forefront of design will be the inverter chiller solution.

External Temperature T interior = T exterior
The over-riding conclusion is that if you want to ensure fresh air reaches
occupants no colder than 16ºC, opening windows are fine, but only when
the exterior temperature is above 13-14ºC. However, as we spend so
much of the time in the UK with external temperatures below this level,

Controls
The control philosophy is relatively simple as can be seen from the diagram 20
opposite. At maximum cooling the fan is running at 100% with the water
valve fully open. As the cooling load reduces, the fan air volume is reduced 6 1 2
to a minimum of 60%. 0
18 19 20 21 22 23 24
If the cooling load reduces further, the water valve is progressively closed Heating Dead Band Cooling
until the dead band is reached. In other words, the fan air volume is reduced
first, followed by a progressive reduction in the water cooling volume.
On heating, the early morning boost has maximum air volume and heating.
On the heating cycle, the air volume is kept constant to ensure there is no
stratification within the room.
The heating requirement is usually a short period just prior to occupation of
the building and therefore does not significantly impact on carbon emissions.
ECM Technology
Advanced Air EPIC 280 fan coil units include pressure independent
discharge fans, which means the air volumes can be pre-set in the factory.
Due to its “smart” motor technology, the fan is self-commissioning as any
change in external resistance is recognised by the “smart” controller and
the fan automatically compensates to achieve its set-point.
The “smart” motor has feedback capabilities which via the BMS can be used
to indicate dirty filters and can be programmable to suit varying room
condition loads.
Approach 1
It is recommended that the space between ATDs should be equal to 1/3 of the particular ATD’s throw.
Be aware that an ATD installed close to the ceiling may cause a Ceiling Effect, as described in Section 1. This may
cause the Throw to be extended beyond the data in a manufacturers’ guidelines.
Taking this into account divide the room into equal sections along the length (L) ensuring that each individual section
has a width:length aspect ratio of at least 1:3 or more. (See Figure 5.3).
The example shows 4 ATDs, for which the air flow rate for each can be acquired by dividing the total air flow rate (Qt)
by the number of total amount of ATDs as represented in the following expression = Qt/4
Upon obtaining the air flow rate for individual ATDs, the exact throw can be ascertained relative to the segment length
(W) from the manufacturer’s technical data.
To prevent causing draughts, identify an acceptable air flow drop (based on velocity) which ensures the air flow envelope
does not breach the occupied zone, normally a height of 1.8m (See Figure 5.2).
Select an ATD size relative to the specific data of the ATD. Remember to consider the above along with temperature
differential and position of the ATD in relation to the ceiling.
Approach 2
By dividing the room area lengthwise, it increases the amount of ATDs (see Figure 5.4). This in turn lowers the air flow
rate per ATD.
Proceed as per Approach 1.
Approach 3
Begin by dividing the room by the same aspect ratio (1:3) as seen in Approach 1. Then, maintaining the widths of the
segments divide the room area lengthwise (see Figure 5.5).
Set the blades to 22° and proceed as before.
Standard Selection
Using a scaled ceiling plan, divide the area into convenient squares twice the size of the derived maximum radial throw. A circular or square diffuser at
the centre of each area can now be selected to handle its proportion of the total airflow rate.
Using selection tables or nomograms, determine the diffuser sizes which satisfy the throw parameter. The most economical selection will produce a
minimum radial throw very close to the required throw. However, the optimum selection will probably be a compromise between the most economical
selection and that which will produce the most comfortable room air movement.
If the maximum radial throw produced by the smallest available diffuser is less than the required throw, then insufficient room air movement and high
level stratification will result. An alternative air terminal device should be considered.
Similarly, if the minimum radial throw produced by the largest available diffuser is greater than the required throw, it is probable that the particular air
terminal device is unsuitable.
Wherever possible, diffuser selections should be within the limits given in the tables; extrapolating data down to very low-neck velocities will usually result
in poor air diffusion – for example, high-level stratification with heating cycles and draughts due to dumping with cooling cycles.
Swirl diffuser units usually have a circular pattern of radial vanes which generate a swirling air motion when used in supply mode. This highly turbulent
swirl effect allows the unit to introduce high volumes of air into the conditioned space, taking advantage of the rapid entrainment and intermixing
characteristics. As a result, the unit can deliver high room air change rates as compared to conventional diffusers.

108 - DSE Flex - Bespoke Substations
Overview
District heating and cooling transfer stations provide the link between
energy suppliers and customers’ systems. They incorporate the
necessary equipment to tailor the supplied heat to the needs of the object
premises as specified in the heating supply contract.
In this they need to comply with all applicable standards and with the
supplier’s technical connection conditions.
Indirect connections (in which district heating and in-house systems are
hydraulically isolated) incorporate components to separate the systems
(heat exchanger), to limit the flow volume to that specified in the contract,
regulate the secondary supply temperature and measure the energy
consumption.
The system described here is a standard type and can be adapted to
your specific project requirements.
Function
Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) drawn from the pipeline of the local
or district heating supply company is fed into the station at an appropriate
temperature and pressure, which may be higher in winter than in summer.
In the primary supply line, this LTHW will flow through a shut-off valve
and a dirt trap/ strainer.
The supply and return lines will incorporate a thermometer and a
manometer to register the temperature and pressure. There will also be
regulatory equipment in the return lines of the primary as specified by
the circuit design. On the secondary side, 3 types of pump modules and
different options can be connected.

Technical Configuration
The Belimo Energy Valve™ is a characterised control valve with
adjustable flow rate and sensor-operated flow control, as well as a power
and energy-monitoring function, 2-way with flange PN16:
• For closed cold & warm water systems
• For modulating water-side control of air purification & heating systems
• Nominal Voltage AC/DC 24V
• Ethernet 10/100 Mbit/s, TCP/IP, Integrated web server
• Communication via BACnet IP, BACnet MS/TP, MP-Bus or conventional
control
The Energy Valve™ revolutionises flow rate regulation and hydraulic
balancing. With the data recorded for the previous 13 months, the system
can be monitored, analysed and optimised for energy-efficient operation.
Advantages
The Energy Valve™ offers a series of unique advantages:
• There are low installation costs: all in one rapid, simple installation • The desired set point is maintained at all times
• Expenditure for valve design is considerably reduced because there is • Energy losses caused by energy fluctuations are avoided
no need to calculate the Kvs value • Operating costs are reduced: saving through energy transparency,
• Hydraulic balancing is considerably simplified, taking 1 person less than pressure-independence & air bubble-tightness
1 minute per line • The risk of Low Delta T (the most common culprit of major system
• The flow rate is measured electronically on a permanent basis & is inefficiencies) is dramatically reduced or eliminated
immediately adjusted automatically in the event of pressure changes • Buildings are able to meet comfort demand with smaller, less expensive
piping & equipment

Regardless of the application or sector being considered, today’s building owners and managers demand
a control system that can accommodate regular changes in the use of its buildings.
However, these developments must be sustainable, affordable and above all else, remain compliant
and resilient.
The BEMS that monitors and controls this built environment needs to offer flexibility and backwards
compatibility to maximise the use of existing resources, and provide a high quality, fit for purpose
environment for its occupiers and services, whatever the application or market sector.
Trend has been partnering with building owners for more than 30 years, providing expertise at every
stage of a building’s lifecycle: from engineering the right solution, to maintaining its effective operation
and continuing to optimise performance as occupant requirements change.
Market Sectors
Trend systems are to be found in virtually every type of non-residential building, from schools, hospitals and leisure facilities to office blocks, shops and
factories. Suitable for the largest building complexes and multi-site applications, they are still cost-effective in even very small premises.
Commercial Healthcare
In the modern commercial environment, Trend BEMS play a key role in Trend systems have been installed in many of the National Health
satisfying the aspirations of developer, tenant and owner-occupier. Service’s largest and best-known hospitals, as well as a huge number of

The QH-curve
The QH-curve shows the head, which the pump is able to perform at a
given flow. Head is measured in meter liquid column [mLC]; normally the
unit meter [m] is applied. The advantage of using the unit [m] as the unit
of measurement for a pump’s head is that the QH-curve is not affected
by the type of liquid the pump has to handle.
For the most common pump types, the term “power consumption” normally refers to P2.
Power is measured in W, kW.
