Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

In this Lesson students of all learning styles will be accommodated. To start off the students will be working
gin groups so students who learn better in a collaborative situation and EL’s can work with peers to foster
learning. For hands on learners they will be very physically involved in the creation of the PowerPoint and
students who prefer to read can help with the research of the topic. All in all the lesson is appealing to many
different types of learners as it has multiple entry points and many different roles that need to be addressed
in the groups.

Lesson idea implementation:

To start off the teacher will go through a PowerPoint review the discussion of Immigration to the United
States in the early 1900’s as had been discussed the days leading up to this lesson/activity. After reviewing
the content the teacher will split the students into predetermined groups. The teacher will then instruct the
students that each group will be given a country, then as a group they will use the internet and their
textbooks to create a PowerPoint slide show about what it was like to immigrate to America from the
perspective of a native from the country they were given. The students will make sure the PowerPoint states
why they moved to America, a little about the country they are migrating from, where they plan on going,
and what thy plan on doing once they get there.

The activity is expected to take at least two days of social studies so around 3 hrs. The students will be given a
rubric that will clearly state what is expected of them as well as supplying them guidelines as they work. Aside
from being graded on the rubric the students will present their PowerPoint as a group to the class. Upon
completion students will not only have an understanding of the standard but also have relatable experience
to remember it by.

Reflective Practice: I really enjoyed writing this lesson and I feel it could have great impact on students
learning as not only are they collaborating with classmates, researching a topic, and creating a product. They
are also being actively involved in a personable experience that they will hopefully remember for years. As far

as this lessons relation to the unit I viewed this more as a closing activity for a unit so as far as extending the
lesson I would try and see if I could find a way to connect this lesson to the next unit.
