UNIT INFORMATION
Grade/Subject: 2nd Grade/Science
Unit Name: Human Body
October 16th 2017 November 3rd 2017
Length of Unit:
(15 Days)
Strand 4: Concept 1: PO 2: Identify the following major parts of:
• The digestive system – mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large
intestines
• Respiratory system – nose, trachea, lungs, diaphragm
• Circulatory system – heart, arteries, veins, blood
Standards
Strand 4: Concept 1: PO 3: Describe the basic functions of the following
systems:
• Digestive – breakdown and absorption of food, disposal of waste
• Respiratory – exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
• Circulatory – transportation of nutrients and oxygen throughout the
body.
Remedial:
Who are you targeting?
I will be targeting the following students: WA, NB, TT, RT, DT, and
PT.
Why?
I will be targeting these students because they are the students that
struggle the most; they are below grade level in multiple areas such as
reading and comprehension.
What strategies or materials will you use?
I will provide these students with their own smaller versions of the
anchor charts that I use throughout the lesson, allowing them to have
that reference at all times through out the unit. I will also provide them
more opportunities for small group work and differentiated quizzes that
allow them to show their understanding of the lessons that is more
Remedial (R) comprehendible for them.
Enrichment (E)
Enrichment:
Who are you targeting?
I will be targeting the following students: JB, TB, WF, MW, CM.
Why?
I will be targeting these students because they are our gifted students
that need extra support with enrichment and more challenging tasks
because they are easily board and found off task.
What strategies or materials will you use?
For these students, I will give them more opportunities to extend their
learning by adding topics from the human body unit to add into their
enrichment folders. They will be able to use the computers to research
topics dealing with the system being covered that week, and come up
with a way to create a model of how that system works to share with the
class, and give them more details about the systems that may have not
been covered or mentioned throughout the unit.

Step 1: Creating Vision and Planning for Assessment
1st Unit Plan GOAL
The goal for this unit is that 100% of students will achieve at least 80% mastery of the
3 human body systems respiratory, circulatory and digestive through a unit test.
1ST Unit Plan – Big Ideas
The three big ideas that the students will be focusing on during this unit are:
1. The respiratory system: Students will learn about the major parts (nose, trachea, lungs,
diaphragm) and the basic function (exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide) of this
system.
2. The circulatory systems: Students will learn about the major parts (heart, arteries, veins,
blood) and the basic function (transportation of nutrients and oxygen throughout the
body) of this system.
3. The digestive system: Students will learn about the major parts (mouth, esophagus,
stomach, small and large intestines) and the basic function (breakdown and absorption of
food, disposal of waste) of this system
Unit Plan – Planning For Assessment
How will I measure progress toward the Unit Goal?
Each day, the students will complete an exit ticket that helps me see where the students are and if
they understood and mastered the objective for that day. Students will complete many formative
assessments including postitnotes, whiteboard checks, and quizzes that allow students to recall
and display their understanding of the information that was taught.
Unit Plan – Planning For Assessment
The summative assessment for this unit will be a unit test. It will comprise of 18 questions that are
either multiple choice, fill in the blank or order the steps from beginning to end, and 2 challenge
questions to help the students earn a 4. The questions will ask the students about the parts and
function of each system (respiratory, circulatory, and digestive). There will also be a challenge
question where the students will need to label the parts of the respiratory system.
