It had been mentioned in the class that there exists a technique named ‘Slip-line field solution’
by Sokolovskii (1954) for the estimation of active lateral earth pressure on a retaining wall. In
this regard, I have uploaded a book by Sokolovskii (Statics of granular media) on Moodle.
Chapter 3 of this book deals with ‘Pressure of a fill on retaining walls’ in which Section 11 deals
with the ‘Active pressure of a fill on retaining walls’. Write a report (neatly hand-written, max. 6
pages) clearly describing the technique and the steps to obtain the active earth pressure on
retaining walls due to surcharged granular backfill based on the deductions through ‘Slip-line
field solution (also known as Method of Characteristics’). You may have to take help and refer
the earlier two chapters of the book to get acquainted with the notations and referred expressions
or analogies.
