Condition Monitoring Application on Ship and Industry
Operation
Condition monitoring is the procedure to maintain and to monitor system
and machinery which is need to monitor to keep system and machinery in good
condition.By definiton ,condition monitoring is the process of monitoring a
parameter of condition in machinery in order to identify a significant change
which is indicative of a developing fault. It is a major component of predictive
maintenance. In machinery repair class, there is studies about predictive
maintenance. So,conditioning monitoring is needed in ship or industry which
using machinery as main component in production or main propulsion on ship’s
operation.By using condition monitoring,we can prevent problems that can
happen when machinery currently in use.Conditioning have parameter in each
system, and by parameter can indicate current conditions of the systems. In
shipbuilding there is Classification Society which is provide and maintain the
ship’s by create rules. The rules which made by Classification Society maintain
every aspect on shipbuilding including conditioning monitoring.
Germany has Germanischer Lloyd’s and rule about condition monitoring
is listed on GL Part 1 Section 1 B General .

Figure 1.Purpose of Condition Monitoring

As we can see on figure 1,conditioning monitoring is used to detect
any decrease in performance on machinery
There are two main methods used for condition monitoring, and these are
trend monitoring and condition checking. Trend monitoring is the continuous or
regular measurement and interpretation of data, collected during machine
operation, to indicate variations in the condition of machine or its components,
in the interests of safe and economical operation. This involves the selection of
some suitable and measurable indication of machine or component
deterioration, and the study of the trend in this measurement with running time
to indicate when deterioration is exceeding a critical rate.
By doing monitoring it can give a lead time before the deterioration
reaches a level at which the machine would have to be shut down. This lead
time is one of the main advantages of using trend monitoring.
Oil is important components in ship’s systems.Oil is used in main
propulsion plant, auxiliary engines, etc. Therefore oil must be checked annualy.
It may vary from every 15 days or once in a month for onboard lube oil
tests. The lube oil must be sent ashore every three months for special laboratory
tests such as spectro-analysis.The following is procedure of oil analysis :
1. Identification
Before doing analysis,we have to identification which problem and part will
be analyzed.

2. Taking Sample for Tests

Before taking the sample, oil must be drained first, so that stagnant oil in
the sampling point is removed. The sample must be kept within control room for
cooling the oil to normal atmospheric temperature. While doing this, the lid on
the sample bottle must be half open else vapour condensing during cooling
process will get back into the sample.
After sample was taken, the next step is decide what components should be
checked. When taking a sample has make sure that system or machinery is shut
down.Sample being tested for many times depend on requirement :
1. Water Content test
2. pH Test
3. Spot test
In this test a drop of lube oil is put on the blotter paper and it is
then dried for few hours. The dry spot is then compared with the standard
spot available which determines the insoluble components in lube oil.
4. Flash point test
This is performed which determines the temperature at which the
vapour will flash up when an external ignitable source is provided. As per
the regulation, this apparatus generally carried on passenger ships.
5. Water Crackle test
This method is used to determine water content in oil where the
oil sample drops are heated in an aluminium container over a flame. If
water is present crackling sound will come.

3. Doing Analysis based on sample

After samples tested, the next step is make analysis based on data /
sample.Analysis is made as evaluation of machinery or systems
performance. From data analysis can concluded and we know about
machinery /systems current conditions.

Condition Monitoring Case Study

Description below is condition monitoring case study which taking from
National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Figure 2. NREL condition monitoring

NREL doing investigation and analysis for Wind turbine Gearboxes by
conduct oil conditioning and monitoring. In this investigation ,author just
analyze oil sample analysis. There are 4 objectives of oil sample analysis
:
1. Monitor parameters not covered by real-time instruments
2. Element analysis to pinpoint failed components
3. Assist root cause analysis
4. Evaluate the functionality of conditioning devices
In the point number 2 described that oil analysis include checking the oil
composition.By sampling we will know the oil composition and then analysis is
performed. Furthermore,by doing oil sample analysis and then the result can be
evaluation for machinery performance.
Figure 3. Oil sample anaylsis
Figure 3 show us the result of oil sample analysis. In this analysis they
checking total particle in oil each 100 ml.The axis refer to minute,so the
sampling is doing every 10 minutes with same dose,100 ml.As we can see that
total particle in first 30 minutes increase almost to 5000000 particle. But in the
next 10 minutes oil particle decrease to 2500000 particle. As well as the next 10
minutes,it also decrease until 100 minutes,oil sampling stopped.This indicates
that the oil particle peaks at 30 minutes and that is the best performance of the
oil.

Figure 4. amount of water each sample

Water content on oil also check to make sure that oil is pure oil, because if
there is water content and its excessive than allowed value can distract oil
performance. In figure 4 we can se that from 5 sample taken, the value nothing
more than 35 ppm.Reference or allowed value of water in oil is maximum 52
ppm.So we can conclude that oil is in good condition.
Figure 5.element identification
Figure 3 shows the results of element identification on oil sample
analysis. There is reference limits which means allowance limits of
material/particle in oil composition. As we can se that the results showing that
composition like iron, aluminium, chromium, copper, lead and so on are in
allowed values.Of 5 sampling is taken and the result is good, there is no element
is crossed allowed values.
Conclusion :
1. Periodic oil sample analysis potentially helps pinpoint failure components
and root causes
2. Particle counts obtained through oil sample analysis need attention on
identifying particle types
3. Oil in this investigation is in good condition
4. Oil monitoring will ensure that machinery will run in good condition and
will also give any warning of deterioration in advance which will avoid
breakdowns and save spare costs.
