Power Situation in India
India currently has unmet power demand of 59,000 MW, the gap is
growing every day

Energy sector in India Power required in India in

Megawatts [MW]
 India consumes 662 kWh per capita,
considering a population of 1.1 Billion
 Annual increase of ~ 4 %
 212,000 MW (Megawatts) of electricity 28%
required 53% Existing: 112000 MW
 112,000 MW existing capacity 19% Planned: 41000 MW

 Considering the planned capacity, there Unmet demand: 59000 MW

is still a gap of 59,000 MW

Due to this situation, the Indian government provides attractive incentives and cash subsidies to projects
involving renewable energy

▪ Efficiency: 50 - 60%
▪ Not effective under diffused and

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 16

Solar Thermal Collector-
Normally used
All the above collector systems have the following
drawbacks

1. They have to track the sun in both directions, East to West

from Morning to evening and North to south over the year for
effective collection of solar heat
as they need direct sun shine and can not be effective in
angled sun light.
1. This makes it very expensive and requires a high
maintenance.
2. These collectors do not function in diffused light if it is cloudy
or raining.
3. Hence they are effective only for 150 to 180 days a year
depending on the location.

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 16

VSM Solar Collectors
Evacuated tubes (ETC ) with Compound Parabolic Reflector (CPC)
Patented Design from Ritter, Germany
▪ A highly reflecting, weather-proof
CPC increases efficiency
▪ The special mirror geometry
ensures direct and diffuse sunlight
falls on to the absorber, even at
unfavourable irradiation angles
▪ No south adjustment mounting
area or tracking required
▪ The collectors can be mounted
with very little inclination

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 17

Solar Collector

In order to increase the efficiency of the evacuated tubes, a highly reflecting,

weather-proof CPC-reflector (Compound Parabolic Concentrator) is placed
behind the evacuated tubes.
✓ The special mirror geometry ensures that even at unfavourable irradiation
angles direct and diffuse sunlight falls onto the absorber.
✓ This substantially improves the energy yield of a solar collector.
✓ No south adjustment of the mounting area, sun progress from east to west,
diffuse irradiation

VSM Solar Collectors

▪ This patented Ritter design can produce enough hot water to run the air
conditioning chiller for >340 days/year in India, 2x more efficient than
other collectors
▪ VSM has an exclusive partnership with Ritter, Germany, for the
manufacturing of their patented collectors to serve the India market

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 18

VSM Chillers
▪ VSM has an exclusive
partnership with Sortech for
the manufacture and
distribution of low-capacity
adsorption chillers in Asia

▪ We have extensive experience

in integrating Broad
absorption chillers. These are
considered state-of-the-art
through unique auto-purging
and safety features to avoid
crystallization for longer
lifespans (25 years)

▪ Through our design and

integration services, we have
the flexibility to integrate
alternate customer preferred
chillers if needed

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 19

VSM Monitoring Systems
▪ VSM has developed an end-
to-end remote monitoring
platform for our systems
enabling the real-time
measurement of performance

▪ Through the use of

meaningful trend graphs and
reports, we can predict
problems before they occur
and drive continuous
improvement

▪ Our performance levels and

metrics are backed by
ongoing Maintenance
contracts that ensure a
customers’ system runs
optimally over many years

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 20

Customer Benefits
▪ Our Solar AC/Heating systems use patented collector designs enabling 2x more
efficient energy capture
▪ By using Adsorption/Absorption processes, there are no compressors which
reduces the risk of system failures and lowers Maintenance costs
▪ The entire system is automated with minimal energy consumption, primarily to
run electric water pumps
▪ The same system can be used for hot water requirements, serving a dual-purpose
based on the season
▪ Our remote real-time monitoring platform guarantees ongoing system
performance
▪ Our systems are eligible for MNRE subsidies, accelerated tax depreciation and
carbon credits
▪ The system is maintained free of charge for Year 1, with ongoing Maintenance
charges ~20% of conventional system contracts
▪ The expected monthly saving is 85-90% of current electricity consumption from
conventional systems

Options for Cooling during non- sunshine hours

Solar air conditioning, as it uses the solar thermal power for

the cooling, normally will not function during non-sunshine
hours.
But the air conditioning requirement in many cases will have
to extend beyond the sunshine hours and may require a 24
hours operation of the air condition system.
There are different solutions available for the non-sunshine
hours that are given below.

VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 23

Options for Cooling during non- sunshine hours

➢ In the case of IBM, their existing Electrical chiller is used as

back up during the non-sunshine hours.
➢ In the case of the Swiss Embassy in Delhi and APL Global
School in Chennai, back up electrical chillers have been
provided for non-sunshine hours.
➢ In the case of GSECL, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, electrical heaters
have been provided in the Hot water storage tank to heat the
water and run the absorption chiller during non-sunshine
hours.
➢ In the case of Dubai island, a thermal storage system for
storing hot and chilled water have been provided to run the
absorption chiller and for cooling during non-sunshine hours.
VSM Solar Pvt Ltd 23
Options for Cooling during non- sunshine hours

➢ In the case of Intel, Bangalore, the chilled water produced by

the solar system is let into the main chilled water header that
is common for the solar and electrical chiller and with the
result, the chilled water available in the header from the
electrical chiller is used during the non-sunshine hours.
➢ usage of Biogas boilers has been proposed for a plant in a rural
area of Gujarat for a district cooling type of a cooling solution
to be used during non-sunshine hours.
This way, different solutions can be used for providing cooling
during non-sunshine hours depending on the requirement of the
client.
