Preliminary Structural Design Report

1. INDRODUCTION

This Report describes in brief the Structural aspects and Design Philosophy
including selected construction aspects for the Proposed Training Centre at
Golf Course.
The structural design will be primarily based on current British and American
standards of practices. While efforts have been made to incorporate all the
structural aspects of the project in this report, a minor revision of the same at
the later stages of the project cannot be ruled out which may be necessary
due to some aspects not foreseen now.

2. STRUCTURAL CONCEPT

The design of the proposed buildings at Golf Course is based on the

architectural drawings prepared at our, office Gulf Engineering Consultancy
(GEC). There are three type of buildings as listed below,
Table 2.1: Building description

Building Name Number of floors

Training centre Ground + 3 + one future

Resource centre Ground + 1 + one future

Auditorium Ground + one future

(steel structure part will be designed for only

one floor)

2.1. Training centre and Resource centre

The proposed Training and resource centre buildings are of conventional

framed concrete structures with stair head room to access the roof.
Foundations, columns and beams/slabs will be designed to carry one
additional floor in the future.
The structures will be designed as conventional cast-insitu beam and slab
system. Slabs will be designed as normal two ways or one way slabs
spanning between floor beams. Floor beams will be designed as
continuous/simply supported beams, as the case may be and the same will
be supported on columns/beams. Beam depths are generally expected to be
400,500,600 and 700 mm, with varying beam widths. Reinforced concrete
frames will be designed considering a 3D analysis.

2.2. Auditorium
The proposed auditorium building will be a combination of structural steel and
conventional concrete framed structures.
Foundations, columns and beams/slabs for the concrete part will be designed
to carry one additional floor in the future. The concrete part of the structures
will be designed as conventional cast-in situ beam and slab system. Slabs
will be designed as normal two way or one way slabs spanning between floor
beams. Floor beams will be designed as continuous/simply supported
beams, as the case may be and the same will be supported on
columns/beams.
The steel part of the building will be designed as main steel beams (rafter) in
regular spacing or as per the architectural drawings which are supported on
concrete columns at roof level using base plate and anchor bolts. Purlins are
used to support the aluminium sandwich roof panels which are spanning
between the rafters.

4. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN SOFTWARE BEING

USED

The structure shall be analysed and designed by using STAAD/Pro software

complying latest British and American Codes. Reinforced concrete slabs and
foundations shall be designed by using standard spreadsheet based on BS
codes.

5. GENERAL DESIGN CRITIRIA

5.1. General
The structure of the project is designed in accordance with the British Code
BS 8110 and American Code ACI-318, with latest amendments, which are
generally considered for concrete structures in the country.

5.2. Units
All units shall be in accordance with the SI system.

5.3. Design Life

The structural elements will be designed to a design life of 50 years.
Protective coating to structural steel work will be a minimum of 15 years for
first maintenance.

5.4. Grade of Concrete

Structural Elements Concrete Grade( Cube strength)

Super Structure and sub Structure 40 N/mm2

Blinding Concrete (PCC) 15 N/mm2

Rev00 4/19
Proposed Training Centre at Golf Course
Governmenrt of Oman
Preliminary Structural Design Report

5.5. Masonry
Concrete blocks shall be dense concrete masonry to BS 6073 and masonry
design and construction to be as per BS 5628. Proposed hollow concrete
blocks with dimension 100mm, 200mm and 350mm (with 50mm cavity) in all
the floors as per architectural drawings. The compressive strength of the
individual blocks at 28 days shall not be less than 7.5N/mm 2 for non-load
bearing walls. Block work below external plinth beams below ground to be
solid blocks of same grade. Cavity wall insulation shall be 50mm extruded
polystyrene board or equal as approved.
Thermalite light weight blocks of maximum density 5.5 KN/m3 may be used to
reduce loads on slabs wherever beams are not available directly under the
wall.

5.6. Type of Cement

5.6.1. For super structure

Type of cement for the super structure concrete is OPC (Ordinary Portland
Cement).

5.6.2. For sub structure

Type of cement is decided based on Chemical composition of subsoil, which
will be OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) based on Soil Report, for all
concrete works, block work, mortar, etc.

5.7. Protection for Concrete

All structural surfaces in contact with soil are to be protected with two coats
of coal tar epoxy resin applied in perpendicular directions, yielding a
minimum of 500 micron thickness (DFT).

5.8. Reinforcement
High yield strength deformed bars with fy = 460 N/mm 2 shall be used for this
project as a common practice in this region.
All reinforcement bars shall conform to the latest BS 4449/BS 6744 and
should be epoxy coated.
High yield strength deformed steel Reinforcement Bars of 8, 10, 12, 16, 20,
25, 32 mm shall be used.

Rev00 5/19
Proposed Training Centre at Golf Course
Governmenrt of Oman
Preliminary Structural Design Report

All steel fabric shall conform to the latest BS 4483 with minimum yield
strength of 480 N/mm2.

5.9. Cover to the Reinforcement

The appropriate grade of concrete and nominal cover to reinforcement is
governed by the following main considerations:
i) Durability of Concrete
ii) Should be in accordance with the recommendations for bar size and
aggregate size for concrete cast against uneven surfaces.
iii) Corrosion Protection of the Reinforcement
iv) Protection of Reinforcement against fire
v) Allow for surface treatments such as bush hammering

The British Code BS 8110 permits a minimum grade of concrete for

reinforced concrete members as C30.
The nominal cover to all reinforcement based on the severe exposure
conditions and grade of concrete C40as follows,
