Art 2 Printmaking Project

Pattern in Nature
Objective: Students will expand on knowledge of the printmaking process. They will be introduced to the
art principle Pattern and Rhythm through research; Students will become familiar with researching the artist
and topics in the media center and computers; Students will use their knowledge of Printmaking to create a
successful drawing that represents subject matter; Students will be encouraged to utilize new techniques in
printmaking.

Assignment: Using pattern and rhythm design a print that incorporates a natural subject matter
combined with patterns. Create a simple but successful drawing to be used for printmaking.

1. Select 2 of the following artist and research how they use pattern in their work. Write down
information that is important and answer questions in your sketchbook. Include images from each
artist.
2. Choose a topic from nature for your design and research images on the web and through library
resources.
3. Practice a variety of patterns in your sketchbook ( random, regular, alternating, flowing,
progressive)
4. Find at least 2 image references for each drawing.
5. Create 3 different successful drawings that include patterns and that are 6”x12”.
6. Each drawing should utilize a great deal of texture, pattern and line.
7. Use knowledge of the Art elements and principles for a unified composition.

MC Escher, Gustav Klimt, Marc Chagall, FRIEDENSREICH
HUNDERTWASSER, Piet Mondrian, David Hockney, Paul Klee, William
Morris.
Answer these questions:

What is the artists (name, Movement, and style?)


What elements of art does the artist use to create pattern and rhythm, explain?
What type of pattern do you see. Explain your answer.
Compare and contrast the two artists’ use of pattern.

Printing Process: (Relief Print)


Break final sketch down in to color areas (use 4 colors, plus black), Color design using colored pencils
Trace design and transfer to linoleum, redraw design on linoleum with sharpie
Using the gouge tool cut out area of design you want to remain the color of the paper.
Print the lightest color first (we will make a series of 8) ex: yellow
Cut out the areas you wish to remain the lightest color, Print the 2nd lightest color ex: blue
Cut out the areas you wish to remain the 2nd lightest color
Print the third lightest color ex: brown, Cut out the areas of the design you wish to remain the 3rd lightest color,
Print black

* Remember at each stage, you must print 8 times! You cannot go back to an earlier step in the reduction print once you carve.
* Make sure your prints are registered, fully inked, and labeled properly.
