I've found that the spaced repetition (SRS) system for learning works particularly well with

language-learning, so Anki is a wonder. Right now the only language I'm actively learning is
Japanese and I use Wanikani to learn it, which is a website that uses the SRS system to teach
radicals, kanji, and vocabulary.

Learning any language requires diligent practice. It's not really how much you study but more
about how often. My Japanese started improving by leaps and bounds once I started actively
studying it on a daily basis. There's lots of online resources, you just have to find what works for
you and stick to it. XD

Textfugu has a chapter that's an intro to their whole program and discusses "learning to learn"
and other stuff of that nature. They have this in there:

You’ve come a long way, and you’re (probably) ready to start learning Japanese. Learning
a language is actually a really big step and can definitely be exciting. However, the
adrenaline rush (ha, it’s fun to have “adrenaline rush” and “language learning” together) of
deciding to do something new and different often makes people dive in too deeply right
from the get go. The first step is to prevent that by taking the proper precautions before you
begin (thinking long term, yeah?).

I think that's definitely true! I've seen a lot of people just dive into a language and then get
discouraged and quit early on, so it's best to start small and not be too discouraged by early
mistakes and failures—learning any language takes time. /o/

together at a set time and game together over a chat or something? *random thought* That
way they could get help if they needed it with understanding what the characters are saying,
and also it would just be fun in general, I think. :)

That sounds fun indeed, but I guess it's a bit hard to do since we all live in different time zones :/
And it would have to be a game everyone or most of the people have.

I also would like to recommend you the program AnKi that Lore mentioned already. With just
writing down random Kanji you've seen while playing a game into the program and learning
them I've come very far with my japanese already therefore that I'm only learning for a year.

Besides the vocabulary you also should consider inroducing yourself into japanese grammar.
Even if you only want to understand and not necessarily want to speak the japanese language, it
can be very helpful to know the different verb konjugations while playing.
I've used this guide to teach myself and I think it is very well explained with many examples and
even some kind of working sheets you can use to practice. If you're lucky you find most of the
verb konjugations in the game you're playing so they're easier to remember :)

:D nice tips from everyone. I really want to give Textfugu a try but I'm very bad with self study and even

if my boyfriend likes anime related hobbies, it's not enough to convince him to study with me

We have The Japan Foundation Manila here that holds afforable classes but it's too far from where I am
so I might just wait for my local government to bring something similar. It's always easier to learn when
you're with other people who you can practice conversing with and teachers to supervise you.

In case the file needs password, please post here. I may have forgotten to remove some.
I'll update this thread as much as possible
