An Argumentative Essay on Gangsterism

It is surprising to see that the social issues in our country have become more serious
tremendously these days. This situation become more serious if involve in youth today. This
is because they are our country’s asset and they are the one who make up our country in
future. Gangsterism is one of the common social issues that involve youths today. Gang
mean by a group of people acting or going about together. Gang is not necessarily bad but
gangsterism invariably mean by doing bad. According to the Oxford English Dictionary,
gangsterism is defined as the actions or methods of gangsters whereas gangsters are
defined as a member of a gang of violent criminals. Gangsters are also call mobsters. In
Malaysia, gangsterism among the youth has increasing almost every year. In 2013, Ex
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Noor admitted that the gangsterism
is on the rise and even gone “out of control”. On 9 June 2010, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said
during Parliamentary Session, the number of gangsterism in 2010 nearly doubled since 2005.
In 2005, there are 32 cases of gangsterism. While in 2008, there are 82 cases of
gangsterism. It showed a big different between 2005 and 2008. There are decreasing to 60
cases in 2009 but it still showed that the number of cases of gangsterism is higher than 2005.
There are also increase 11 cases of gangsterism from 2012 to 2013. Question lingering in
our mind is what causes the youth today involve in this social issue. Family will influence
youth to be involved in gangsterism compare to school as the main role of parents is
to take care of their youths.

The bad attitude and behaviour of parents are the main cause for the youths to
involve in gangsterism. Parents are the first educator of their youths. Before send to
kindergarten, youths only in contact with parents or family. Parents are the role model for
their youths. Therefore, they will copy what their parents do. According to the Erik H. Erikson,
German-born American developmental psychologist, state in his theory of psychosocial
development of human being, youths between 12 years old to 18 years old will undergo the
process of fidelity which are they will try to find their own personality. Youths in this state is
grouping as youth. To find their own personality, they will try to copy and learn from nearby
people like parents, friend and other. Parents are the closest people to the youths. The
attitude and behaviour of the parents definite will affect their attitude and behaviour too.
Parents abuse their youths also will cause gangsterism as they will follow what their parents
do and they will think that, “why parents can do it, I cannot?” Therefore, they will become
violent. Unfortunately, the number of child abuse in Malaysia is mushrooming in these few
years. There were 2789 cases reported youths abuse in 2009 and jumped to 3257 in 2010.
In 2011, the number continue went up to 3428 and keeping up a consistent uphill trend. In
2012, there were 3831 cases recorded. Picture below show that the effect of a family

violence. It is clear to show that the behaviour of parents will cause the youths to become
violent. In this case, we can conclude that the behaviour and the attitude of the parents will
cause the gangsterism among youths. Therefore, parents have the responsibility to prevent
the happen of this social issue.

Besides, contemporarily both of the parents are busying with their work. This is
because the education standard in our country has increase and everyone can find job
easily. Parents who are too focus in their career cause their child lack of the love from their
parents. One of tenets Arab stated that if a child lack of the love from their parents who are
busy is call as orphan. Youth is hard to meet up with their parents unless is early in the
morning and late night. Busy parents cause lack of communication between parents and
youths. Therefore, when youths face the problem, they cannot discuss with their parents.
Besides, the family or the house make the youths do not have the sense of belonging. Thus,
they will find their friend. Some of them maybe are the toxic friend. This will cause the youths
to involve in social issue like gangsterism. The old Malay adage said, “if we make friend with
a people who sells perfumes, we will also smell sweet. But if we make friend with blacksmith,
our body will has the splash of metal. And if we make friend with a person who clean the
defecation, our body also will have the smell defecate.” This showed that the influenced by
the friend is very important to form a personality of the youths. Therefore, as parents, they
have to always notice to their youths to prevent they make friend with toxic friend. It is found
that some of the gangsters are the sons of prominent family even sons of the public officials
in government. As a conclusion, busy parents will lead to the happening of gangsterism.

 Moreover, some of the parents today teach their youths in the wrongly way. Some of
the parents are too strict while some of them are not care to their child. For the parents who
is too strict such as always force their child to attend tuition, force them to get good result,
force them to make friend with the good student will affect the youth feel that they do not
have any freedom. Therefore, they will try to escape from their parents’ clutches. They will
purposely do what the action that parents dislike so that their parents will angry them and
give up to teach them. The actions that they will do like play truant, drug abuse and so on.
There was a case in 2011 that a 17 years old teenager killed his parents because they did
not agree the teenager to throw a party. The news is showed in attachment A. The family
that are not care to their child also is one of the factors that cause the happening of
gangsterism. To attract the attention of their parents, youth will involve in gangsterism such
as bullying, vandalism. Parents does not give advice on time when found that their youths
faces some problem or involve in social issue but blame school is also cause the youth
today involve in gangsterism. This will cause the youths slip from the track of life and
continue do the wrong thing or action. On the whole, ways of parents to teach their youths is
an important knowledge so that youths will obey their parents yet live happily.

Some may argue that school is the main cause of youth involvement in gangsterism.
The role of teacher is not just to give knowledge to student, also need to teach them about
moral values. This is important as moral values provide a structure for our life. Teacher who
always teaches their student according to the syllabus will cause the student lack of the
knowledge of moral value. Thus, they will do the things that go against the moral value just
like bullying people. Furthermore, unbridled behaviour of students nowadays also causes the
teachers especially young teacher do not know the ways to control the discipline of the
student. This will lead the student to become brave and do the illegal activity like drug abuse,
Mat Rempit. Student bully teacher has become a new epidemic in this century. Cyber
bullying or bullying in class are the example of bullying teacher. Nowadays, when
information technology is highly developed, youths or students just take a video or picture
and post in internet simply to order to humiliate the teacher. Apart from that, bullying in class
such as do not pay attention in class and make noise in the class are mentally harm the
teacher. Thus, to prevent the incident happen on them, the teachers will choose not to be
too strict to students’ discipline. Thus, lead the youth to involve in gangsterism. In fact, to
control the discipline of the student should be the responsibility of parents. Parents are the
more suitable person to teach their youthsren as parents are the closest people to youths. In
addition, teacher in the school need to teach many students and could not only focus on one
student. Hence, family is the main cause that will influence the youth to be involved in
gangsterism.

 In brief, parents should take some preventation to avoid youths to involve in
gangsterism. This is because the main role if parents is to take care of their child. Parents
should not just seek a rich material life for their family. Instead, it is important for parents and
youths to communicate with each other and nurture harmony, and close relationship. In the
article “gangsterism amongst youth” by Yayasan Da’wah Foundation Malaysia (2007) stated
that, “ it is indeed saddening to witness our children change from a loving person, obedient
and loyal to a person that likes to hurt, bully, shout, ill mannered, aggressive, rude and could
not care less about others. They are involved in gangsters since their early age.” Picture
below showed that the violent of gangsters to bully a youth. Gangsterism which is the thorn
in Malaysia will cause this country to become unsafe and will form a bad reputation in the
world. Therefore, parents should always be ready to teach their youths because family is the
first and the last preventation to avoid the youths to be involved in gangsterism.
