Drowned father of five was a good swimmer

T
he tragic revelation that the drowned
father of five, who lost his life at the
Manukau harbour last weekend was
an able swimmer, had an athletic regimen and
was a regular to the beach, is once again a stark
reminder of the limitation of man’s physical
power against that of nature.
Speaking to the family of the deceased
40-year-old Imtiaz Aziz, The Indian Weekender
learned that Mr Aziz was a very good swimmer,
athletic and was regular to the Awhitu Regional
Park beach for fishing with his family.
Despite being athletic and familiar with the
location, Mr Aziz succumbed to the might of
the sea and left back only memories to cherish.
The Fiji Indian community in South
Auckland is mourning the death of Mr Aziz
who was known as a ‘humble family man’ in
the community.
Mr Aziz was with his two children, a son and
a daughter when he got trapped in the rising
tide, sparking a water rescue by the lifeguards.
“He was a lovely person, very humble,”
brother-in-law Ishrar Mohammed told The
Indian Weekender.
Mr Aziz had five children, two of whom were
with him and his wife at the beach where they
had gone for fishing.
“Imtiaz was a good swimmer and so were
his children. He has another child coming in a
few months. He has been in that area fishing
several times in the past, at times even I have
accompanied him to go fishing there,” Mr
Mohammed said.
“It was unfortunate that rising tides suddenly
pulled them deep into the sea and got them into
trouble. The whole community is shaken by this

Since the trio was swept too far to swim into,
the woman flagged a man on Jetski to rescue
them.
“The little boy was on top of dad as he
couldn’t swim,” the woman told Stuff.co.nz.
The woman said she waited with the man’s
wife and other children as the girl, aged eight,
made it safely to shore.
A couple of kayakers made their way out to
the father and son, and the jetski driver pulled
them to shore, she said.
“The jetski driver pulled the boy out of the
water and then the dad, he was unconscious.”
None in the family was wearing lifejackets,
she said.
The man was given CPR when Westpac’s
two crew arrived, but he could not be revived.
The children were pulled out before the
rescue helicopter arrived and were flown to
Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.
Masjid at-Taqwa in Manukau in its Facebook
post on Monday, February 5, announced the
funeral arrangements to the public.
Mr Aziz’s funeral prayer was held at the
Masjid at-Taqwa at 7 p.m. on Monday, followed
by burial ceremony in the At-Taqwa section of
the Puhinui Memorial Gardens.
“We pray to Allah Azzawajal to grant him the
highest stages of Jannah Jannatul Firdaus, and
in this critical time, May Allah grant his young
family strength and patience,” Facebook post of
Masjid at-Taqwa said.

Jacinda Ardern’s charm offensive keeps rage-

industry away from Waitangi Day celebrations
¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH Thousands have gathered at Waitangi – where

T

people up north at the Waitangi Day celebrations
is going to remain in public memory for a long
time.
It was Ms Ardern’s charm offensive at its
best, which probably kept away all normal
expressions of rage, anger and protests that we
have come to associate with the Waitangi Day
celebrations, in recent times.
Lest it may offend someone, and with due
respect to all those who either have stirred-up
emotions on Waitangi Day, or chose to express
their stirred-up emotions for reasons unrelated
to Waitangi Day, a rage-industry has evolved
around this important day, which is also New
Zealand’s national day.
Be it Maori activists, who have struggled
to come to terms with the terms of reference
of the Treaty of Waitangi and the division of
control on land, power, and resources of the
country between Pakehas and Maoris or be it
unionists, anti-capitalist or anti-globalisation
protestors, the event has seen them all. In fact
on many occasions Maori activists have been in
a minority in expressing dissent.
In past years, politicians have been gagged,
or been hit by people slinging mud and sex
toys. On the last two occasions former Prime
Ministers Sir John Key and Bill English had
not returned to the Waitangi Day celebrations
for not being given a chance to speak on the
occasion.
Earlier Prime Minister Helen Clark had
stayed away from celebrations in 2000 and
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at
the Waitangi Day celebrations

The memories associated with New
Zealand’s national day are often associated
with expression of rage, rather than celebration
of unity in diversity, in the fast emerging multi-
cultural face of the country.
It is important to note that despite all of this,
the celebrations in the past have been several
notches better than national day celebrations
of many other English-speaking immigrant-
countries of the West.
However, there is no escaping from the fact
that a kind of rage-industry has existed around
our National Day celebrations in the past.
Indeed, this year was a welcome departure
with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s personal
charm offensive in full swing.
In fact, Ms Ardern quietly became the first
Prime Minister to attend a Waitangi dawn
service with no protest and the first female
Prime Minister to speak during the pōwhiri.
To her credit the Prime Minister was camping
for full five days in the up-north meeting with
Iwi leaders, visiting local marae and schools
and meeting with a number community groups.
The gesture was welcomed and appreciated
by one and all - the locals and the visitors - that
especially descended at the town of Waitangi
Dawn services.

Maori Kings was first signed in 1840 – first to
celebrate a dawn service held under moonlight,
then gathering by a lone bagpiper, who played
as the sun rose over the Bay of Islands.
Earlier, at the pōwhiri on Monday an offer
was made to the Prime Minister and her partner
Clarke Gayford, for considering burying their
baby’s placenta at the Treaty grounds, to signal
the winds of change blowing at Waitangi,
probably under the spell of Ms Ardern’s magic.
However, it was Prime Minister’s barbecue
breakfast that stole the show and won many
hearts.
Ms Ardern’s deceptively charming
confession to the crowd, “I said, Nah we’re
having bacon butties,” was received by loud
cheers from many.
“We didn’t want walls … we think this is
a way to show in a really physical way that
our job is service,” the Prime Minister further
asserted.
Indeed, Ms Ardern’s charm which refuses
to die even after hundred days in the office
has done the magic in keeping the symbolic
expression of rage away from Waitangi Day
celebrations, at least for this year.
However, this has not happened because of
addressing the causes precipitating the dissent,
which is a reminder, if not a concern that the
path to reconciliation is as easy as may be
presumed.
Probably, this explains National Party Leader
Bill English’s timely reminder that the new
government may not enjoy such a charmed ride
in future years.

an impromptu consular camp last
weekend, bringing relief and smiles on many
faces of the members of community present on

official consular camp per se, where actual
services were facilitated or delivered.
Instead, it was more of a consultation, and
educating the members of the Indian diaspora,
whereby many important and often confusing
issues related to visa, passport, OCI, Pan Card
and Aadhaar Card were discussed.
The occasion was Gujarati Samaj’s Republic
Day celebrations held on Sunday, February 4, at
New Lynn, Auckland, where Honorary Consul
of India, Bhav Dhillon was present as the chief
guest.

n Auckland woman has had an

guard yelling racist rants on a group of fellow
movie-goers.
The woman was shaken when she heard a
female security guard at Manukau Event Centre
yell at the moviegoers ‘shut up’ and ‘go back
to your own country’ when they were exiting
the cinema hall on Thursday, January 26, Stuff.

taken her parents to see the most awaited and

‘Padmaavat’ and reported this incident.
“Actually we had gone to watch a movie,

all excited,” Bijal said in an interview to Radio
Tarana.
Ms Bijal added that while she was coming out
of the theatre, this loud rant caught her attention
that the female security guard launched on the

screening was organised for the seniors of the
trust at Event Cinemas, St Lukes, on Wednesday,
February 7, at 11 a.m. The enthusiasm amongst
the seniors was evident when they settled down
at the cinema with their friends and snacks,
waiting for the film to start.
“It is an opportunity for our seniors to
come together and see the film with the fellow
mates which is like a fun picnic for them,”
Chairperson of Shanti Niwas, Ashok Gaur told
The Indian Weekender.
The special screening was done with the
support of Forum Films, who brought the film
to New Zealand.
Shanti Niwas had booked the whole cinema
with more than 200 senior members attending.
“The seniors are very eager to see the film
which has created waves in the industry and is
admired for its music, star cast, and amazing
cinematography,” Nilima Venkat, head of
Shanti Niwas said.
The Indian Weekender spoke to the seniors
seated inside the theatre who had their own
reasons to see the film. Some acknowledged

fellow senior members only, while some said
they were curious to know the film’s highlight

my daughter saw it earlier and praised about
everything in the film. Also, I like Deepika
Padukone and know the star cast is very
strong,” Andrea Costa, a senior member at the
screening said.
“I am looking forward to seeing the film
because I saw the trailer, the songs and I have
been wanting to see what this magnum opus has
to offer,” senior member Harban Singh added.
After the film screening, the senior audience
came out of the theatre applauding the film’s
script, music, direction and acting of the star
cast.
“The best film I have seen in years,” a senior
member said after seeing the film.

asked since the election has been “What’s
it really like being a Member of Parliament
(MP)?” The truth is that it’s been exhilarating
and exhausting. It’s a privilege and a great
responsibility. The hours are long and the
breaks are few and far between but the prospect
of having a positive impact on people’s lives is
heady. Having spent most of my working life
advocating for legislative and policy change,
being an MP is my opportunity to be part of

Over the past year, many people have asked
me how Parliament works. This article is the
first of a two-part series that aims to shed
some light on that, and share some reflections
on being a new MP. Democracy is a form of
government in which power ultimately lies
with the people. To be effective, democracy
requires that voters first understand and then
participate in the system.
New Zealand Parliament is made up of
the Sovereign – the Queen represented by
the Governor-General – and the House of
Representatives (the House), which is made up
of about 120 democratically elected MPs.
Power is distributed across three branches of
government – Parliament makes the law; the
Executive or Government administers the law
and the Judiciary interprets the law through
courts. A separation of powers is important
so that each can fulfil its role well without
interference from the others. For example,
MPs cannot interfere in court cases as that’s the
responsibility of the judiciary.

in the House. MPs play a crucial role in

protocols, rules – and incredibly long hours.
The days we spend in Parliament start early
in the morning with caucus meetings or select
committee meetings, followed by Question
Time after a lunch break and then debates in the
House till the House rises at 10pm. A speaking
list is issued each morning that tells us which
MPs will speak in the House that day – and
about which Bill.
In my next article, I’ll go into more detail
about select committees – often described as
the engine room of Parliament – and also the
roles of electorate and List MPs.
For now, I end by sharing part of the Prime
Minister Jacinda Ardern’s historic speech at
Waitangi this year, slightly paraphrased. One
day I want to be able to say that I earned the
right to be in Parliament, and only you can tell
me when I have done that. We will not always
agree, but I will listen and act to the best of my
ability. Hold me to account for the things I have
said I’ll do. I may not always get it right, but as
the whakatauki (Maori saying) goes,
“Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te
iwi. With your basket and my basket the people
will live.”(There’s only so much I can do alone,
but together we can achieve so much.)

Ms Kaur told police that she was just sitting
with her husband when the man came in
pointing the air gun at the couple and put a bag
on the counter asking them to ‘put something’.
Mr Singh quickly reached to a bat kept under
the counter when the offender shot him with his
BB pistol. The pellet hit Mr Singh on top of his
sternum and bottom of his neck.
“As soon as he got off his chair to pick the
bat, the man shot him,” Ms Kaur told the police.
“He [the offender] was standing at the gap
of the counter and crouched before firing his
gun,” she added.
Although hurt, Mr Singh chased the offender
with his bat outside the store on to the riverbank.
The man then vanished from the scene.
Mr Singh then came back to the store and
removed the pellet from his body, which caused
minor injuries to him.

Bollywood have in their hearts.
Gulzar Saab then stood up and read some
of his poems which are possibly even more
heartfelt than his lyrics.
Poems that evoke emotions such as pain, joy,
nostalgia and are a mirror to the world we live
in. They make as much a political statement as
highlight a lover’s plight.
Gulzar Saab is known as a magician of words
and the audience was witness to the magic as he
spoke in his deep baritone reciting his popular
poems.
By the time he finished, the audience was
mesmerised, almost in a trance and did not
want him to stop.
The show later changed gear and Auckland’s
known talented singers like Umesh Sharma,
Avish Sharma, Rini Chakravarti, Shweta
Diwekar and Hemant Shirsat took to stage.
They enthralled the audience with their
soulful renditions of Gulzar Saab’s most
memorable songs. 
Auckland’s discerning audience would like
to thank Arun and Rushi for bringing this living
legend to New Zealand and giving us a lifetime

Clear policy needed in Immigration overhaul

n immigration overhaul is imminent in
2018, going by the recent comments
of the Immigration Minister Ian Lees-
Galloway.
In that regard, there is a need for a clear policy
layout that informs all potential migrants, well
in advance, about possible fallouts of their
endeavours of embarking a journey to migrate
to New Zealand.
Immigration is always a sensitive topic
everywhere around the world.
In Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and in
most parts of the world this topic is heavily
debated. There are many issues for the newly
elected Labour government to look into, as Mr
Lees- Galloway says the current immigration
system “is a one size fits all’’.
Whatever the government intends to do with
immigration, the one thing that matters most is
that we must have clear guidelines, policy and
laws in place.
It is important that all stake holders, advisors
and most importantly the potential immigrants
themselves are able to access information
needed to successfully negotiate with the
immigration system of New Zealand.
Regardless of whether people come here on
visas as varied as the student, skilled worker
or investors, the government must have clear
policies and guidelines in place about what they
can and cannot do while here.
For investors, who are required to invest
in the range of $3 to $10 million, they will
obviously want a bit more clarity and assurance
about what their visas allow them to do and
what will be their onward journey to permanent
migration, if they chose to pursue that
path later.
In other words, they would want clear
guidelines before investing in NZ and moving
their families and staff here either permanently
or on a temporary basis.
There are so many considerations, from
schooling, health, religious freedom, and
privacy issues to consider before one decides
to immigrate.
Auckland is already feeling the heat with a

as the Acting New Zealand High
Commissioner to Fiji.
Mr Curr is an experienced New
Zealand diplomat with a strong
interest in the Pacific.
Recently Mr Curr served as New
Zealand’s Ambassador to Turkey,
concurrently accredited to Israel and
Jordan, from 2014 to 2017.
He has also served at New
Zealand’s missions in Egypt and
Tonga.
Between his offshore postings,
Mr Curr had the opportunity to work
on a range of Pacific issues, both in
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Trade, and while working as Private
Secretary to the Minister of Foreign

Mohammed (JeM), a global terrorist
because of China’s veto in the so-
called 1267 Sanctions Committee
that deals with the Islamic State, Al
Qaeda, and associated individuals
groups. However, Akbaruddin did
not directly mention the committee

session on the working methods of
the Security Council convened by its
current president, Kuwait.
“The principles of anonymity and

rex, Archaeopteryx (the earliest
bird) and the gigantic, long necked
Diplodocus," O'Donovan said.
"This honeymoon period could not

available habitat on
Earth. There was nowhere new for
species to move to, which may have
prevented new species from arising,
contributing to the dinosaurs' pre-
asteroid decline," O'Donovan said.

Slow cooked mutton curry with

T hose that love their mutton will agree that mutton curries and kebabs never taste quite the same
overseas as they do in India, and they can’t quite put their finger on the reason why. The answer
could well lie in the name. Traditionally in India these recipes use goat meat which is also known
colloquially as 'mutton'. Mutton in English actually means the meat from sheep, a totally diffent
animal and therefore taste. All is not lost though:with simple tweaks thses mutton ewcipes turn out
just as delicious.
PREPARATION: 10 Min
COOKING TIME: 45 Min
SERVES: 6
TASTE: Medium
INGRDIENTS
• 750g Mutton pieces, on the bone
• 2 Tbsp oil, for cooking
• 2–3 black cardamom seeds
• 3–4 cloves
• 21/2 cm cinnamon
• 2 onions, graded
• 2 Tbsp garlic paste
• 2 Tbsp ginger paste
• 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
• 1/2 tsp tumeric powder
• 2 Tsbsp water
• 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
• 11/2 tsp salt, or to taste
• 1 cup warm water
METHOD
• Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan on
medium heat. Add the black cardamom,
cloves and cinnamon stick; when these
start to crackle add the onions and sauté
until the onions is light-brown in colour.
• Add garlic paste, stir, then add ginger
paste and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring
continuously until oil surfaces.
• Lower the heat, add the red chilli powder
and turmeric to the onion masala and mix
