Intermediate Writing Lesson Plan: Peer review of thesis and topic sentences

Objectives: Students will analyze their thesis and topic sentences. Students will provide peer
feedback on one peer’s essay, focusing on thesis and topic sentence clarity and cohesion.

Time Activity Materials

5 minutes Review Comparison Essay Outline. The teacher Chalkboard
will elicit students to provide the key elements and
outline of a comparison essay.
10 Students review thesis statement and topic First drafts
minutes sentences in their first drafts. The teacher will
instruct students to pull out their first drafts and
underline their thesis statements and corresponding
topic sentences. At this point, students may make
changes they feel necessary
15 Peer editing and review. Students will read another
minutes student’s first draft, focusing on cohesion and
clarity of thesis sentence and topic sentences.
10 Students provide oral feedback in mini conferences
minutes with their peers.
5 minutes Students will make any relevant changes based on
their partner’s feedback.
5 minutes The teacher will ask the students to volunteer to
share any changes that were suggested or made
during this editing process
