SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY SEMESTER:REAPPEAR
SESSION: (JULY-DEC, 2017)
PROGRAMME: B. TECH. (ME) MAXIMUM MARKS: 50
COURSE NAME: FLUID MECHANICS DURATION : 1.5 HRS
COURSE CODE: MEL208
SHEET 1 OF 1

Note:
1. Marks are indicated against the questions.
2. Calculator is permitted.
3. Assume suitable data, if required.
Course Outcomes
CO1: To Understand the properties of fluids
CO2: To study and understand pressure measuring devices
CO3: Understand the concept and principles of hydrostatic forces.
CO4: To understand the buoyancy and floating concept
CO5: To study the kinematics of inviscid fluids

PART A
Q 1. WRITE IN BRIEF. (03 MARKS EACH) RELATED
COs

i. What is the difference between dynamic viscosity and kinematic viscosity? State CO1
their units of measurement.
ii. Write the practical significance of metacentric height. CO2
iii. What do you mean by surface tension? What are the factors that affect surface CO1
tension.
iv. Define path line, stream line and streak line. CO5
PART B
Q 2. LONG QUESTIONS ( 07 MARKS EACH) RELATED
COs

i. Explain the term total pressure acting on a plane surface immersed in a fluid at any CO4
angle. Obtain an expression for this, and for the corresponding depth of the centre
of pressure.
ii. A cylindrical buoy is 2 m in diameter and 2.5 m long and weighs 21.5 kN. The specific CO3
weight of sea water is 10 kN/m3. Show that the buoy does not float with its axis
vertical. What minimum pull should be applied to a chain attached to the center of
the base to keep the buoy vertical?

iii. Define two-dimensional stream function and velocity potential. CO5

Check if Ø = x2 − y2 + y represents the velocity potential for 2-dimensional irrotational

flow. If it does, then determine the stream function ψ.

iv. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled CO2
with glycerin. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5 m2
between two large plane surfaces at a speed of 0.6 m/s, if (i) The thin plate is in the
middle of the two plane surfaces and, (ii) The thin plate is at a distance of 0.8 cm
from one of the plane surface. Take the dynamic viscosity of glycerin= 8.10 x 10-1
Ns/m2
PART C

Q 3. DESCRIPTIVE QUESTION: [10 Marks ] RELATED

COs

i. Find out the differential reading “h” of an inverted U-tube manometer containing oil CO2
of sp.gr. 0.7 as the manometric fluid, when connected across pipes A and B as shown
in figure, conveying liquid of sp.gr.1.2 and 1.0 and immiscible with manometer fluid.
Pipes A and B are located at the same level and assume the pressure at A and B to
be equal.
