Tutorial 9: Calculate occupant injury criterion

Case description:

Topics covered:
Head Injury Criterion (HIC)
Chest Severity Index (CSI)

Files required:

belted.zip

Step1: Open crash model results

1. launch LS-PrePost after running "belted.k" using LS-DYNA

2. File → Open →LS-DYNA Binary Plot
3. open d3plot
4. click Left render button
5. FEM →Element Tools →Identity
6. enter Key in ID=1,1787
7. press Enter on keyboard (see Figure 1)
notes: The Head Injury Criterion (HIC) calculation in this tutorial will be based on accelerometer
node ID 1. The Chest Severity Index (CSI) calculation will be based on accelerometer node ID
1787. Computation of both parameters requires acceleration data generally output in the
NODOUT file.
Step 2: Specify unit system settings

1. Setting →Post Setting

2. select Hic/Csi const
3. select Time units: msec
4. select Gravity constant: 0.00981
5. click Aply
note: These are the appropriate selections for a kg-mm-ms unit system.
File → Save →Save Config (to save these settings to the .lspostrc configuration file for future
use)
Step3: Generate HIC plot

1. FEM →Post →ASCII

2. select "nodout *" from the top list
3. click Load
4. select "1" from the middle list
5. select "14-hic36" from the bottom list
6. click Main
7. click Plot
Step4: Plot HIC with pre-filtering

1. click HicCsi
2. activate Apply pre-filter in the lower panel
3. select Time: msec in the lower panel
4. click New
Step5: Pre-filtering explained

1. Figure 7 illustrates the concept of pre-filtering the acceleration signal before calculating HIC.
The computation is performed as follows:
2. X, Y, and Z components of acceleration are filtered
3. Resultant acceleration is plotted
4. HIC is calculated

Step6: Plot CSI with pre-filtering

1. select "1787" from the middle list

2. select "15-csi" from the bottom list
3. click New
4. click Done
