Chapter 3
Structural Design Actions
Part 4
Example of Wind Actions
on a Building
COMI 312 Structres and Design 2 — Chapter 3 — Pat 4
In this example, we will review the
steps required to obtain the wind
pressures acting on a building
surfaces and members
At this point in the design exercise,
one must have an idea of the
structural systems required to
resist the actions
(vi $12 Stutures and Dasign 2- Chapter Pat ¢The structure to be studied is:
Roof angle:
= tan(2.5m7 Sm) = 18.43"
‘Average root height = 5m +2.6m/2 = 6.25 m
Roof structure is portal frame every 5 m
‘Overhead doors at each ends
‘Building is located in rural feld near Auchiand (2 = 6)

The structural members are:
CMI 512 Stuures and Dasign 2— Chapter Pal ¢We need to determine the pressures
on each of the 6 surfaces
During design, the
members on 1 & 2 will be
sized the same, ditto for 3
&6and4&5,
However, the frames will
be considered as an
entity and one will need
to consider the worst
‘combination of pressures
on 3, 4, 5 and 6,
CIVIL 312 ~ Stuur and Dosgn 2 — Chapter 3- Pat ¢ |
The pressures are given by: wea
P = 0.5p air Vaes,o7 Chg Cayn
Pay =1.2 kg/m?
gn on th inn wi a eo
Cig, = (ster onan sate ot 17
Vées,o = design wind speed, gsw2.3
For members, one must consider the external
and internal pressures
‘CMI 312 — Stuur and Design 2 — Chapter 3 Pat ¢ peerThus, we will have: 7 :

The design wind speed is determined from
the maximum cardinal wind speed. sw2.2
Vaes,o = MaxIMUM OF Veit g
CMI 512 Stuures and Dasign 2— Chapter Pal ¢ |Veitp = Ve Ma (Mz.cat Ms Mt)
Where
Vp = regional 3 s gust wind, as per Table W3.1
= 45 mis Zone AG (Vegas per Table G3:3 for strength)
=38 mis (V25 as per Table G3.3 for serviceability)
M,= wind direction multiplier — Table W3.2 - taken as 1
terrain/height multiplier - Table 4.1A - taken as 1.06
Shielding multiplier ~ Table W4.3 - taken as 1
M,= topographic multiplier — §W4.4 - taken as 1
CIVIL 312 ~ Stuur and Dosgn 2 — Chapter 3- Pat ¢
Thus
Veitp = Va Ma (Mez,cat Ms Mt)
= 45 -1-1.06-1-1
= 47.7 mis
And Ves, = Vsits = 47-7 m/s
CMI 512 Stuures and Dasign 2— Chapter Pal ¢ :We then have:
p =0.5-1.2-(47.7)? -Cyg -1
= 1365 C,, Pascals
= 1.37 Cig kPa
At this point, the only thing left is to look at the
building shape and determine the C,, values
