Surface Preparation METAL

Although often overlooked, proper surface preparation may be the single most important factor in achieving a flawless
finish coat. Different substrates require different techniques, but every surface must be clean, dull and dry.
OTHER KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:
• If the existing paint film is chipped, cracked or is otherwise failing, it must be removed to a sound surface before
priming or painting.
• Cracks and holes should be patched and sanded before painting.
• Your paint is only as good as the surface it’s covering. If the surface is in disrepair, a new coat of primer and/or paint
will most likely not fix the issue.
• Fill gaps between walls, ceilings, crown moldings and other trim with the appropriate caulk after priming the surface.
Surface preparation on a metal surface is very important. However, the same techniques apply.
You want to make sure the surface is free of any contaminants. Use an appropriate cleaner to remove
any oily residue or other issues. If there is corrosion, it is recommended to use a sandpaper, steel wool
or another abrading method to clean away any loose rust.
If there is any “bleed-through” of the rust once the primer is dry, a second coat typically
locks away the stain.

FLOORS
Surface prep is always important, but it takes on special prominence when painting floors. Wood and concrete
floors need to be properly prepared so the paint adheres to the surface. It is imperative that the floor be clean
prior to painting. Repair any cracks and holes with an appropriate filler. If you are painting a new concrete floor,
it must be cured according to the supplier’s recommendation — usually 30 days. Please refer to the floor paint
instructions to determine if a primer is necessary.
