employee needs to do their current and future jobs as well as other areas outside of their work that
will broaden ones experience base.

Employees at IBM are encouraged to take control of their own skills and development and learn to
identify resources, build relationships and use personalized learning to their advantage. With the
support and tremendous investment that IBM has put forth in continuous, on-demand learning,
employees have a plethora of learning offerings and resources to help grow their career.

career development. The Your career portlet provides employees personalized actions and status
items related to their career development, along with access to the key resources/activities related to
career planning, training, and career development, all in one place.

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

IBM provides the "Individual Development Plan" to employees to document development plans and
monitor their progress throughout the year. Using this tool and updating it on a continuous basis is
just one of the ways that IBM helps keep career development alive and at the fore front of employee's
mind over the course of the year. With their manager, employees have development discussions
where the conversations evolve around improving the employee’s ability to set career goals and steps
to achieve those goals.

BLUE OPPORTUNITIES
Blue Opportunities is an initiative designed to help employees take advantage of a range of
experience-based learning opportunities such as stretch assignments, cross-unit projects, job
rotations, publications, patents, job shadowing and more, that will enhance employees’ careers and
expertise. The goal of Blue Opportunities is to develop employees' skills, expand their knowledge and
offer exposure to potential career or job changes in a way that they would not typically have exposure
to. Opportunities can be a few hours, weeks, months or up to a year, part- or full-time.

CLASSROOM TRAINING
Classroom training is available to IBM employees with a range of topics offered: technical, professional
skills and certification. This gives employees an opportunity to learn a set of base skills to then apply
in their everyday roles. Classroom training is an excellent channel for hands on, face to face learning.
MENTORING
In order to succeed in today's competitive environment, corporations must create a workplace climate
that encourages employees to continue to learn and grow. While mentoring at IBM focuses on career
guidance and socialization, it also responds to the need to preserve expert knowledge. Mentoring
provides a robust way to continually pass on critical knowledge and skills as a legacy of organizational
capabilities and intelligence to the next generation. IBM encourages employees to be mentored and to
mentor others, as it’s a win-win situation for the business.

TUITION REFUND
When you take approved courses on your own time, IBM will reimburse you 100% of required fees
such as tuition ($1200/course maximum), registration and text books, upon satisfactory completion.
The purpose of the Tuition Refund program is to encourage employees to increase their effectiveness
in the current job role and their potential to assume different or greater responsibilities within IBM
through voluntary participation in external education programs outside regular working hours.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

At IBM, we have a variety of opportunities for students to contribute to our team and share their
enthusiasm and fresh ideas:

section also carries 45 questions to be completed in 45 minutes.
Interview
There are two rounds of interviews, viz., the technical and and the HR round
Technical and Personal Round for Software Candidates
Mainly subjective questions in C, Operating Systems, DBMS, Data Structures are asked
interspersed with some on the candidate's personal background.
.Typical questions in C and Data Structures
1. WAP to interchange 2 variables without using the third one
2. Explain quick sort and merge sort algorithms amn derive the time-constraint relation for
these.
3. Explain binary searching, fibonacci search
4. General questions on binary trees, transversals
5. General questions on graphs and their representation.
Typical Questions on Operating Systems
1. Demand paging, page faults, replacement algos, thrashing, etc
2. Paged segmentation and segment paging
In this section, case studies are presented are presented before the candidate to percieve his
reaction and his/her communication skills are tested. IBM expects teamwork and teamspirit
from the candidates and their answers should reflect this attitude
Typical question is

You are a project manager of a big multinational project. There is a person X, assigned to you

Row2 S K ? $
Row3 I P Z +
Row4 # 8 F Q
Questions r as follows ( not same questions but same type)
1.if column1 , Column 4 r interchanged and row3 , row4 r interchanged and diagonal elements from
top left to bottom right r written in reverse order then what is the element in row1 and column
1?
2.if Z’s in odd numbered rows r replced with 7’s and S’s in odd numbered columns r replaced with 5’s
then which column elements sum equals to 9?

3.After giving similar type of conditions , what is the element left to H? In this section they gave
around 4 matrices of this type and gave some questions for each matrix.
Total No. of Questions r 15. these r multiple choice questions.5 answers were given for each
question.
No negative marks for this section. Time Limit is 13 minutes.
SECTION-2
All questions in this section r from number series. Total number of questions r 20.time limit is 4
minutes.these r also multiple choice questions( 5 options).Negative marking(1/4) is there for this
section.

Hii,
IBM-GBSGD visited our campus on 29th apr after a long await...It was 11 IT company to visit our
college...
First it was a very awesome ppt...They will give every info about IBM in 2 hrs approx.....IBM vice
president visited our campus on that day...
Then we had test it is well organised....IBM spends a lot on this test...first it will issue a
token...it has to b retained till the end of process....Test consisted of 3 sections...
1 section--12 min 15 datamatrices questions...easily we can solve 12..
2 section---4 min 20 questions...we can only solve 15 hardly...so best thing is copy 10 questions in
rougjh sheet given to u (it will take 1 min) and do the rest in 3 min..It really worked for me..i
answered 19...
3 section....12 min 15 questions ....Itz too lengthy and involves strong quant basics...u can hardly
attempt 6 ...So best wy is to use dis tym for questions return in rough sheet....
Out of 600 ...148 got short listed for rest of process....
Next round was GD...Topic was Cricket overshadows other games...
They see everything in dis communication, content etc...It will go on for around 50 min...First of all the
will ask us to giv intro they everyone has to give their opinion on topic. Then there will b long
discussion and at last everyone has to conclude..Best thing here is to carry paper and pen ...note
down all the points told by ur group members and at last summarize it will create a impression on you
as good listener....It really worked for me....
Out of 148 ...118 got shortlisted for PI
HR interview:
Next round was Hr for me...It ws simple a lady took it for me...She ws ver cool...
First question was tell about yourself....so best thing to do here is focus mainly on your strengths and
divert your interview towards your project and paper presentations if any ...Giv examples for ur
strengths fron your project they will get impressed....
Then she asked me to write factorial ...i wrote it ....Then asked about family
background...Then about my native as it was very far...Then i was told to wait for tech interview....
Technical interview:
It was a very senior official who conducted the interview ....He was very cool and supporting
me as soon as i get tensed...
He also started with tell about yourself...I told im a hardworker...
Then he told if u r a hardworker then you should have got 98% and he was checking my resume...
I told some times if u work hard also u will not get the result sir..
For that he told software industry needs through put...no one will care whether you are working hard
or not...
I replied him saying that ...If i work hard i may fail once twice at last i will succeed ...
He was impressed by my answer...
His next question was ur resume is not proper sripad ...U didnt mention abt ur proj...
Then i said sorry sir..i got chance to speak about my proj ...then i started blabbering about it...
As my project was totally new one-On high performance computing(on CUDA-Graphic card
programming)...He was very impressed and told u know research is going on this in IBM labs...so hw
come you came to know about this..
Then i told him about my workshop in IITM ...
He asked me to write code of my project...It was a cake walk for me..I wrote some 30 odd lines and
explained every instruction...
He asked me about soft development cycle ....
Then he gave a prob to solve...Gave 2 matrices and asked to print similar elements and delete un
similar elements...
I wrote first part...for second part he asked me to jus say the logic its enough...
Then next question was tell your location preference and told that he is selecting me...
I told i dont have any pref sir...i lik roaming places...
He told no u hav to tell me at least 2
I told..He asked me to go up and fill the employment form...

Keep in mind if at all they ask u to fill the emp form...u r selected...
But i was very tensed i couldnt sleep whole night as they were going to declare results next
day...
Next day mornig they declared results at 9 ....
Totally 73 got shortlisted finally....Finally after many rejections got selected..So believe in
yourself..hav patience...
B strong in basics...

Paper Type : Candidate Experiences
Test Date : 22 August 2010
Test Location : JNTU Hyderabad
Posted By : Venkatesh

Hi guys,

This is Venkatesh and i want to share my interview experience with you at JNTU Hyderabad conducted
by IBM. Though I my not through to the technical round I want to share my valuable experiences.
Initially after entering the hall where we have to write the written test we were placed in some places
irrespective of order. And the invigilator came and handed over the envelope with question papers and
answer sheet.

And the thing is that it is not like all other exams what i have faced it is purely different. In total the
exams consists of three Different sections i.e., three different question papers like

1. Data matrices
2. Number Series
3. Reasoning (Quantitative Aptitude)

Each paper is different no option of working as you like, the order is followed strictly and we can go for
other paper only after one another. Each section has its own time limit.

Time duration for different sections is:

1. Data matrices ( 15min)

2. Number Series ( 4min )
3. Reasoning ( 15 min)
Initially we have to start with Data matrices when the invigilator says start. It contains 15 questions
and we should answer them in 15min. No negative marking in this section. When time ends invigilator
says stop. Each question has its own arrangement and does not depend on the previous one. Just take
care of it and perform as fast as possible.

And again he says start then we should start Number series. It contains of 20 questions and should be
answered in 4min. This section requires high accuracy and speed. This section too has no negative
marking. Series from R S Agarwal is more than sufficient. If u can’t find the logic then skip to next one
and don’t waste time on working out with one question.

Next when the invigilator says start we have to start Reasoning. It consists of 12 questions and not so
easy and requires lot of calculation. So don’t keep hope on this section and do better in the above
rounds. That’s hold your qualifying mark. Time for this section is 15min.

After 1.30 the results are announced and I m very happy that I m the one among the qualified.

Next they called us for the Group discussion at 4.00 o clock. The topic is “ ENGINEERS SHOULD NOT
ACCEPT JOBS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES”. I performed well but luck is not on my side on that time. So
I was rejected. Hey other topics are “IPL” and “Social networking sites are a boon or bane”.

Posted By : Anand Babu
Hi friends,. I'm Anand Babu frm CIT, coimbatore. IBM came to our col on Dec 21st, 2009. It was an
ON-campus. Nearly 400 students attended and 59 got selected. It was my 3rd attempt aft Aricent and
Cognizant.
The process started by 9 in the morning consisting of Apti, GD and an intrview.
The pattern was
SECTION-1 [ matrix test] 15 question – 13 min.[ No negative marks for this section]
SECTION-2 [ Number series test] 20 question 4 min. 15 mins mathematical[Negative marking(1/4)
is there for this section.]
SECTION-3[Analytical type(Apti)]12 question 15 min.[ Negative marking(1/4) is there for this
section.]
Friends, go thro the question papers given in the freshersworld. i think it is more than enough.
Practice it and become fluent.
for analytical section use r.s. agarwal.
After the first round, i was bit confident that i would clear. The results were announced at 1.30pm. As
expected I was one among the students selected for GD.
My panel of GD started at 3.30pm. Topic was POVERTY. At first every one was given a minute to
express their views. Then after, open discussion for 5mins and at last every one should conclude for a
minute. Friends, be polite in ur way of expressing views. Its a team group discussion. HR's will see
how you react in a team. I did well in the 2nd round and was waiting for the results. Results came by
5pm. Luckily my name was there.
3rd round was an HR interview. The HR in my panel was really cool. Till my interview was over he
was very cool, smiling,. It gave me more confident to talk boldly. My interview lasted for abt 15mins
or so. Only HR questions.
Friends, be calm jus talk boldly and express ur answers in a clear way. Tatz enough. My interview was
over by 6.30pm.
We waited for results til 9.30pm. Atlast the HRs came stood in the balcony of the 1st floor and
announced the results. I was selected. That day experience was really superb. Its unforgettable.
Be confident and do ur best.
See u in IBM.
Take care.

Hi Friends,

I would like to share my experience to all of you that i had in IBM.

IBM India Pvt. Limited. visited our campus on 22nd Dec 2009 where only MCA students were eligible.
Unlike other years there were three sections:
1: Data Matrix Questions (no negative marking) : 15 questions in 12 minutes
2: Number Series (1/4th negative) : 20 questions in 4 minutes
3: Arithmetic Questions (1/4 negative) : 12 questions 15 minutes
I have not remembered the exact question but i can give you the sample type that will certainly help
you.

DATA MATRIX
Col 1 Col 2 Col3 Col4

Row 1 @ % $ #

Row 2 % + # &

Row 3 @ & % #

Row 4 * + $ &

Interchange Row3 with col3 , Row1 with Row4 and reverse the diagonal elements from top left to
bottom right:
Quest; which is the 4th element of row2;
Quest; which is the second diagonal element from top;
NOTE : Change in the matrix is applied only for the particular questions only , it is not reflected in to
another question.
SERIES:
Series questions are very very simple. You must manage your time in such a way that you can go
across all the questions in 4 minutes.
1: 11,22,23,11,24,25, ?
2: 1,4,9.64, ?
3: 2,3,5,7, ? (prime numbers)
and so on....
MATHEMATICS;
It has been observed that no one can solve more that 6 questions in the given time. So don't waste
your time and solve at least 2 to 3 questions correctly. and don't be disappointed because you may be
the top scorer if you have done well in other sections. This section questions are lengthy and requires
long calculation.

Friends,
According to the global assessment it has been found that no one can solve all the questions within
the stipulated time. The best way to get through the written is perform well in first 2 sections. I think
there is no sectional cut off because even i had solved only 5 questions in which one may be wrong.
After the Written Test , There is a GD round in which they mainly concentrate on your communication
skills. Our GD was around 15 minutes and we were in the group of 11 members. My GD topic was
"MONEY MAKES PEOPLE
IRRESPONSIBLE".
Once the GD round is over you have to go through the TECHNICAL AND HR ROUND which is
combined. This round is simple, you must be good in your basics and your "area of interest" subject. I
was asked about my academics background, and few basic questions from DBMS, my project. My
interview went around 25 min. but my interviewer was very friendly and i didn't even realize that 25
minutes.
I
t is my personnel advice to concentrate more on your series and data matrix questions . One you are
qualified in the first round then 70% of your work in done. Rest depends on your GD and your luck
that you can't change it. isn't it?
Hope to see you in IBM.

Here no GD was been conducted directly they switched to the Communication Test :-
Detail about IBM Voice/Communication test
First they'll conduct a written test of 10 mins and 15 questions of simple english.
It contains about . . articles, arranging the senteces in right order and finding errors in the
sentences.
Then after that they will give you the cell phone and . . you have to make a call to the given no.
then enter your TIN(Test Identification No.) provided by them
This is the most important round and the most of the guys had been eliminated from this round
only.Be careful and sit at the place where the external noise inference is too less.

1st round - "Read the sentences"

u'll be given a paper which contain 10-12 sentences in english.
u'll be asked to read the sentences like "Read the sentence no 6..."
there will be 8-9 sentences to read. (easiest round)

2nd round - "Repeat the sentences"

The server will say some sentences and u have to repeat them.
The sentences will be in different voices, speed, accent (easy one) Every time when you move
ahead . . the length of the sentences increasing so be careful and attentive.

3rd round - "Make senetence from Jumble words"

The server will pronounce some jumbled words and u have to make senetence from that U can't
add ur own words/articals/adjectives and all to make the sentences. u have to useonly the
senetences pronounced by the server. ( it would be a normal used sentences like - "eat i daily
mango" (Most difficult among all)

4th round - "one word answer"

The server will ask question which u have to reply in one word.
Like... what is the color of milk?
What is frozen water called? (ICE)
Which is faster:cat or worm? (CAT)
Which is thinner:finger or leg? (FINGER)
how many weeks r there in a year? (52)
how many minutes r there in 1 and a half hr? (90)
What do u wear when u go out in cold:sweater or shirt? (SWEATER)
How many eggs are there in a dozen? (12)
If you are going out for lunch with your mother, who are you:daughter or sister? (DAUGHTER)
Which is smaller castle or cottage? (COTTAGE)
Afternoon comes before or after lunch? (BEFORE)
trees have more no. of branches or trunks? (BRANCHES)
how many months are there in two years? (24)
U see with ur eyes or ears? (EYES)
the whole process will take 10-12 min. The accent will be of US, UK , Australia . The problem
people face is understanding the sentences. The questions are very easy to answer but u have to
catch what the server is saying.
The the interview . .for the name sake only . .They will ask you only .. that HR questions.

Best of Luck . . to you all !!

Posted By : Anju
Hi all out there tis is S.Sathappan(B.E-ECE 04-08) from A.M.A.C.E(Arulmigu Meenakshi
Amman College Of Engineering-Tamil Nadu).

I attended IBM off campus in VEL MULTIMEDIA college avadi Chennai on 21st november
2008.

Actually u all know it’s a 2 days process of recruitment but for us it got over on 21st itself since
IBM expected nearly 1000 but only around 400 came so these are the rounds:

1)WRITTEN TEST:

a) 3 Matrices will be given each has 5 qns totally 15 qns and time limt:13 mins for tis section(no
–ve marking for tis section-so attend all must k)

b) Number series completion total 20 qns time limit:4 mins for tis section (-ve marking of 0.25
is present) as the time is limited on cing the qns answer it else skip and forward BUT TIS IS
DAMN EASY I attended 16/20 in tis section very easy

c)Aptitude totally 12 qns and time limit is:15 mins(-ve marking of .25 is there)(qns were from
profit and loss, area, percentage, time and distance, age problems and etc but no qns similar to
R.S.Aggarwal but similar to tat k so prepare well)

ONE ADVANTAGE NO SECTIONAL CUT OFF HERE IN TOTAL ONLY THEY CHECK
THE RESULT…………GALS NEVER MIND SINCE IF THEY R THRO IN WRITTEN
THEY R INTO IBM BUT BOYS MAN OPEN UR MOUTH ELSE PROBLEM ONLY FOR
MALE CANDIDATES GUYS…………

MATRICES:

1) CLMN1 CLMN 2 CLMN3 CLMN4 CLMN5

ROW 1 J J U V X

ROW 2 U V J 5 6

ROW 3 V U J X 5

ROW 4 5 6 V J U

ROW 5 6 5 X U V

a) which has many maximum number of J s present in the following pairs:

i)row1 and column 1 ii)row2 and column 2 iii)row3 and column3 iv)row4 and column4
v)row5 column5
b) if all j’s are replaced by 3 and u’s replaced by 4 which row or column has d maximum value
of 18

c) if all rows and columns are reversed and the diagonal from left bottom to right top corner has
been reversed so wats the value in row4 column2

etc many guys cant remember to correct figures since I was in a hurry for answers so cant
recollect the questions

NUMBER SERIES COMPLETION:(easiest of all)

1)22,34,35,23,36,37,____

2)10,9,8,8,9,10,7,6,5,____

3)1,2,3,3,5,4,7,____

And etc many it goes on totally 20 qns its damn easy just get the answer on first sight else
forward to next qns…

APTITUDE:(a bit tougher tan other sections)

1) if a printerA prints 60 words per minute and printer b prints 80 words in one minute printer
A starts at 7.47 and printer b at 8.07 wen ll printer b catch up wit printer A….?

2) a fountain is of length 144cms ten width of 288 cms and depth of 91 cms so how much
litres of water ll be there in 46 cms of depth in the same fountain….?

3) there is a printer consisting of color and balckwhite printer the rate of color toner increases
from $33 to $35 and black white toner from $28 to $29 if the total rate is $1600 there is 3/5
color toners wats d ike in price…..?

…..tats it I can remember friends….

FIRST ROUND STARTED AT 10.30 AND RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED AT 1.30 AND
GD STARTED BY 2PM

2)Group Discussion:

Totally out of 500 attended only 30 were short listed for GD and 10 in each batch so
from GD 28 of them advanced to next round.

In GD for each and every batch there were 3 to 4 panels for us 3 panels were
there…..they r helping and friendly
I was in the 3rd batch and our GD topic was “ENGINEERS SHOULD ACCEPT JOBS
FROM OTHER COUNTRIES OR NOT”

To everyones surprise all 10 from my 3rd batch got thro to the next round AND 28 from tis
advanced to TECH+HR single round since members were minimum and they had to finish their
recruitment process in a single day so only like tis…..GD results came out by 3.30…….

3)TECH+HR:

IN tech+hr there were five rooms each consisted of two panels I got the room 1 where a
gent and a lady were there as a panel, here s d interview wit tem:

Panel 1:good afternoon and am……..

Me :a very good afternoon sir and am Sathappan(wit a warm handshake from

Panel : give me a brief intro about urself….?

Me :said………….

Panel 1:so wat was ur final sem project brief us…..?

Me :explained in detail wit examples and wit some few diagrams….

Panel 1:so u know C…..?

Me :yes

Panel 1:so how do u find the greatest of N numbers can u write a program wit the
pseudocode……..?

Me :yes, done wit examples and briefed it with arrays…..

Panel1:can I have ur consolidated marksheet……?

Me :yes,sure…..

Panel1:he framed questions from the subjects we learnt like am from ECE so he asked
from data structures,computer architecture,wats random process etc…..?

Me :answered all of his questions in general not in depth as these subjects were from initial
sem’s so only…..

Panel 2(lady):so Sathappan wy IBM……?

Me :gave reasons wit examples…..

Panel2(lady):wat do u know about IBM…..?

Me :hmmm I prepared from IBM website wit some figures tat was helpful really

Panel2(lady):wy IBM should hire you……?

Me :just suit urself to their vacancy…..

Panel2(lady):tis is d joinin date r u ready to join….?

Me :who wont join IBM hmmm everyone aspires to join IBM…..said a confident YES

Panel2(lady):r u ready to get relocated……?

Me :yes, surely and gave reasons tat career is d first for a male ten only rest….

Panel1&2:together they asked do u have any questions for us…..?

Me :yes and asked one question to tem……

Here GD/Extempore was been conducted. around 2000 ppl attended.. but only 154 got through
finally..

IBM PAPER ON 30th OCTOBER 2008

Hi friends, Its sumit (mca) frm Kalyani Govt. Engg. College (WB) On 30-09-2008 IBM visited our campus

MCA
total no. of stud :85 26
Apti qualified :26 14
GD qualified :22 13
Final selection: 9 5 (rest 2 each frm B.tech & M.tech)

Yes u saw it right .the accent test was not there.(we also came to know only on that day).

But b prepared, it was there in some of the colleges.

One more surprising thing-all the 9 students selected were boys.

1.ppt
it started at abt 10:00 am. it was nothing new , just old things only, but concentrate it may help u during ur interview.

2. Aptitude test

SECTION 1: matrix test (15 ques ,13 min .no –ve marks)
3 matrices were given- 5 ques on each matrix.(total 15 ques).

It was all of similar type, u must hav got it frm other papers. The important thing is b fast; don’t waste time on any one question.

SECTION 2: series test (20 ques .4 mins .1/4 –ve marking)

Ques were v.v easy .BUT u have to b fast, if at the first or the second look u solve it .its good else leave it. None of us could
attempt all the questions(I did 13 or 14 of that)

SECTION 3: this section is tough. U must practice to do this section. (12 ques 15 min. ¼-ve marking).

Most of the ques were from time and work, one was from ratio-proportion. u can get the ques from other papers, I exactly don’t
remember the data.(after the series test ur mindset will b to solve the ques in a hurry, but b cool, read the questions completely
then start solving)

(I stood third in the aptitude test, first was also a mca student,he was also selelcted, but 4th (mca)& 5th (mca) were not selected).

3.It was a GD round

My topic was “primary education is more important than higher education”. it was cool. no tension. Everybody from my group
was selected.(8 candidates).

The topics of other groups were: “cricket VS Olympic” & “Engineers should not go outside to work” (it was nothing but a new
version of “Brain Drain”).

4. INTERVIEW (tech +hr)

There were 3 members. one of them was the head of the selection team(H). one was a madam (M) .and the third was a sir (S).

Firstly they asked me for my cv.

I thought they want to see it ,so I just opened my file and gave it to the madam(M) .but they told me to take it out .i had 2more
copies of my cv at the back of my file, I just took out one of them and gave it to the madam.

For some time madam went through my file, and the H was going through the cv I had just given

* so friends ,always keep 2-3 copies of ur cv.*

The first and the obvious question was “tell me something abt yourself”.

Me> started telling whatever I had prepared.

Madam>interrupting me , tell me something which is not in ur cv.
Me>started telling abt my family, friends, my hobbies, my strengths, weaknesses etc.

Somewhere in between I had told that I never panic.

H>if now only I say u to go out of this room, won’t u panic?
Me>(hardly 5 mins had passed, and this sort of question, it was exciting as well as nerve-shaking) They were smiling, I was also
smiling, I confidently proved them that I wont panic, but it will b sad that u didn’t judge me and even this reaction will b outside
this room.(they were satisfied).
H> ok tell me –what is dbms?
Me>answered it .
H>what is Rdbms?
Me> answered it.
H>examples of dbms and rdbms
Me>gave the examples.
H>ok suppose we don’t know anything abt RDBMS, teach us Rdbms.
Me>(now the ball was in my court).i started telling abt the relation, primary & foreign keys, Cartesian product, all types of joins,
union ,intersection etc.and why it is called RDBMS.
H>what were ur subjects of 4th sem?
Me>this was the question I had prepared, but I don’t know how did I forget that.i could tell only three of them.(trick—tell
anything with a little sense , they also don’t know exactly)
H> ok ,Do u know ,what is DDL,DML?
Me>answered it confidently.
H>are u comfortable with GROUP BY and HAVING.
Me>yes sir .
H> he gave me a relation(emp_id,dept_no) and another relation (dept_no,no_of_emp) as output (u must hav understood the
problem,it was to find –how many employees were there in each dept)
Me>worte the SQL.
H>now do some amendment in the command so that the output does not contain the no. of employees of dept 1 .
Me>wrote it .
H>are u sure it will do?
Me>I feel so.

Now it was the turn of sir(S).

S> are u comfortable with c,c++
Me>much more than dbms (they smiled).
S> what is void pointer?
Me>in my answer I also added that it cannot b dereferenced.
S> is it that under any condition, it cannot b dereferenced?or we can do it under some condition.
Me>(thought for a few seconds)as far as I know ,it cannot b .
S> ok what are the difference between array and link list?
Me>I explined them by drawing figures, explining the adv. and disadv.(I was satisfied with my ans and I feel they were also
satisfied).
H>what is fopen () ?
Me>answered it .
H> what are the different modes of opening a file.
Me> answered.
H>Are u familiar with UNIX or LINUX?
Me>yes sir, UNIX was one of the subjects in my 2nd sem.but for this interview I have not prepared this.
H>ok sumit, no problem,whatever u know u say.what is rwx?
Me>I answered it .then he asked abt “group”. (without thinking , I said)Sorry sir I don’t remember(lator on I realized , he asked
abt the user group, actually as I had not prepared unix for this interview, my mind got stuck---so one simple addice is --think
for sometime then ans)
H>ok no problem.
Me>(suddenly ,it came to my mind) I answered it .
M>May I ask u operating system?
Me>yes madam.
M> what is busy waiting?
Me>I explained it elaborately with the help of pen and paper.
M>next ,she asked me a term ,which I had never heard of.
Me>sorry mam I have never heard it before.
M> ok no problem. what is binary semaphore?
Me>I explained, I also starting writing the codes of critical section problem, but she told ok understood.
M> what is Belady’s anomaly?
Me>I just explained it.
H> did u sit for TCS?
Me> no sir , my marks was not there.(through 60%,actually I lack in my graduation)
H>asked me the reason of less marks.
Me>explained it.
H>suppose u are selected for any company, IBM or any other company, then u will gate abt 1 year. what 3 things u will do before
joining?
Me> I said ,1st of all I will collect info abt the company, on which softwares the company works for that I will also consult my
seniors.[before telling the 2nd and 3rd things (which I had no idea of) madam interrupted, I really thank her for interrupting]
M>now a days most of the companies work on a lot of software- java, SAP, J2SE,C# etc. so how many of them are u going to
learn, and suppose u have learnt one thing and u are given work on some other software, then what will happen?
Me>I will start learning the one which I feel will be most interesting for me .and if at all I don’t get a chance to work on that
software, no problem, my learning will not b a wastage that is going to benefit me in some or the other way. Moreover, life is
always a challenge, if I m told to work on a software that is new to me, no problem, I will learn it.
H>ok sumit do u have any question?
Me>(I had prepared 2 -3 questions )what will be my day to day responsibilities ? ( I had never expected the answer he told me)
H>”work”.
Me>what sir?
H>”work”.tell me anything u will do except “work” (madam started laughing , I was also smiling)
Me> sir , whatever I will do ,that comes under “work”.
H>that’s why I told “work”.
Me> “work” yes I m going to do that , it is my duty but is it my responsibility?
H> ok ,just I m adding something “doing work”. now this becomes a responsibility. (madam starting laughing, I too was
smiling)* I think all these things were just to check ur confidence, just b calm and enjoy talking to them*
H>why r u not wearing tie?
Me>sir, I don’t have, that’s why .
H>that is not the reason, I have many ties then also I m not wearing it.
Me>sir I belive that u all have come here to see my qualites not the(he interrupted by saying “not the quality of ur tie”) and
everybody started laughing (me too).
H>yes that is the answer.
H>ok u can leave now .(they gave me the cv)
Me>thank u sir.

That’s all .I was very nervous, I felt I could have done better in HRsection. Lastly, the results were declared at abt 7:20 pm and
thank god I got selected.

Best of luck to all of u. bbye .see u in IBM.

IBM PAPER ON 2nd JUNE

Hai friends I am Niranjan

I have been selected for IBM IN CAMPUS PLACEMENT conducted at BITS, Warangal ,A.P
ON 2nd JUNE 2007. A total of 1406 students appeared 4 written test and around 220 were
selected in written.

We were asked to write the ESSAY along with written test .Written test was started around 10.30
AM and ended around 12 noon which comprised of ESSAY also. Results were anounced around
3.00 PM.

GDs for 220 students started around 3.30 PM and ended at 5 PM I think so. Results were
anounced at 6 PM and 164 were selected in GD.

They held INTERVIEWS on next day .There were no results after tech interview many of the
students were directly forwarded to HR and some of them were rejected and they told them this
directly. All the interviews were completed at 4PM . They announced the final results and 79
students were selected atlast.

WITH GOD’S GRACE I WAS ONE OF THEM. Let me explain u each phase in detail

1.WRITTEN TEST
A. VERBAL ABILITY(10marks):
1,.2) ques on prepositions
3) nearest meaning of apathetic
a) ….. b) sympathetic c)indifferent d)inattentive
4) ……… did not agree him.(ans is with)
a)at b)to c)with d)by
5) _ clown of that circus became famous for his antics.(article)
6-10 a RC on pollengrains, reproduction in flowers thru bees ………something like that

This was the easiest RC I have ever seen in any company’s written test.

B.APTITUDE(25 marks):
It consisted of 25 questions believe there was not even a single question from objective
arthmetic(ie, trains, boats&streams ,time &distance etc .Please don’t waste ur time in preparing 4
arthmetic)

Almost all the ques r 4m VERBAL REASONING only (RS AGGARWAL is more than enough)
1-5) out of 600 students 536 have credit cards (AMEX,MASTER ,VISA CARDS)……….(a bit
hard try this section with inter 1st year maths(A.P))
Draw the venn diagram with 3 circls intersecting
1)How many had MASTER card
2) How many had only MASTER card
3)How many had VISA card
4) How many had only VISA card
5) How many had AMEX card

I think difference betn 1 & 2 answers is 41 and 3 &4 is 21( have a wise guess its easy then)
Three ques on DIRECTION SENSE (easy)6 . A person starts behind is house which faces to east
and walks 50m an turns left walks 100m ……… in wht direction he is from his house.

7. If NORTH is SOUTH-WEST then SOUTH-EAST is (ans is NORTH)

8. I dint remember5 ques on DATA SUFFIENCY(think well then it is easy)

5 QUES on if $ is 1 and * is 0 (just binary representations) then

444 is represented as
125 is represented as
So on Remaining questions were on BLOOD RELATIONS ,PROBLEMS ON AGES etc

C. ATTENTION TO DETAIL(10 marks):

3 Questions were asked on below pattern

1. Find any dissimilarity. a)234222272451 b) 23422272451 c)234222272451 d)

2342272451

6674934879456
3. a)CCBDABBC b)CCBDABBC c)…….. d)………

3 Questions on if + stands for * ,/ stands for - ,* stands for / and / stands for + then Find the value
of given expressionsRemaining 4 questions are on a case study A person is eligible for a job if
passed his degree in Science with aggregate over 60% and willing to pay a bond of RS 2 lakhs
for 2 years ………..

If the person fails to satisfy any of mentioned criteria then he has to report Manager or
Administrative officer …………………

D . TECHNICAL(10 marks)
3 questions are from C (easy) 3 questions from DBMS (very tough) 3 questions are from
unix(easy 4 comp students) I didn’t remember the missing question sorry(I think its 4m OS)

That’s it 4 written test RS AGGARWAL(VERBAL REASONING) and any elementary English

Book 4 grammar all the above 2 days before exam is more than enough to crack IBM WRITTEN
That is what I had and what I did.

2.ESSAY
Topic was "EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR HEALTH" We were given 15 mins just after written
and asked to write in not more than 200 words
3.GD
After we entered the room all the rules were changed it was not a GD but just like JAM. We
were 11 in group and each of us was given 3mins to speak on the topic along with our
introduction. Panel members were free with us they havent stopped any of us though we ran out
of time .

They want u speak .Thats it. Our topic was "ENGINEERS SHUDNT ACCEPT JOBS FROM
OTHER COUNTRIES" 9 out of 11 were selected in GD from my group.

4.TECH INTERVIEW
U cant distinguish tech and HR in IBM both go on same lines Sir : tell me abt ur self me :
…………..

He asked me 3 case studies .I have answered it confidently. Hobbies and Goals ? Interested
subjects? OS and C what is Virtual Memory can u change the size of VM on comp if so how? I
have explained him wht is VM and how we can change it in XP . Here is where I hit my first
arrow into his heart.

2 quest on DBMS just queries but I was clean bold by those 2 quest but I pretended as if I know
it and trying hard to get it . Even interviewer helped me a lot but I cudnt. But I made my mark
already. I infered two things in case studies TEAM WORK and NEVER GIVE UP which I
implemented in later part of my interview. To get through tech one shud possess

1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS with min TECH Skills 2. very high TECH stuff 3.mesmarism I
used 3 and 1

5 HR
They ask u gen quest abt ur self and what do u know abt ibm? Don t say what u heard from ur
friends say wht u know truly , I was caught on similar basis later on I recovered and replied in
my own way what I know abt ibm from roots .At the end of i/w I was asked a tech quest what is
diff betn class and object? I have answered it in very general way he was amazed at the ans to
that quet .I‘ll make one thing clear to u ,Please put the interviewer in conversation and let him
know that ur good at communication ,creat a context to speak .many of u thinking how can we?
Every interviewer will be asking u Any questions to me ? there u r. prepare a bunch of questions
for him before u go to interview.Be sharp ,walk dynamic have a smile on face, take as much
liberty as u can don’t get tensed, talk confident ,TIMING is very very important ,be
spontaneous ,put ur true character in front of interviewer and let him know wht u r

ITS NOW OR NEVER

STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT.

OK GUYS BYE

WISH U BEST OF LUCK

IBM PAPER ON 24th APRIL AT KOLKATA

Hi guys and girls,

I appeared for the IBM recruitment test on 24th april, 2007 in our campus. Luckily, I got
through.

Remember u need to have ur college ID cards or else they might not allow u to sit for the exam.
Now there were 3 rounds of qualifying exams...
First round is the aptitude test.(55 marks total, cutoff 30 for boys)
So boys u have to be really good at what u do & girls u all can be almost be rest assured if u clear
the aptitude test u will get through.
For aptitude test remember the first and most important thing is TIME MANAGEMENT.
Many good students don't make it through the aptitude because they lack this skill. Practice
R.S.Aggarwal, it 's more than enough for the aptitude.

It has 4 sections in its paper: (1 hr test)

(i) verbal (10 mins)
This will consist of filling up prepositions in the blanks.
e.g. 1. he had been singing for a very long time, but until now he has never been seen ____ the
opera house
options: (a)at (b)in (c)on (d)none
2. the sea food did not agree ____ him.
options: (a)with (b)on (c)for (d)in
There will be atleast 2 of these questions.

Then there would be few other 'fill in the blanks'.

Then there is a comprehension. Our passage was from "Origin of Species".
It was fairly easy, but don't read the passage first, read the questions first and then find the
answers from the passage.
They are mostly in sequential order from passage paragraphs.
This part is easy, u will get through if u have basic knowlege and skills of english.

(ii) Quantitative (25 questions, 30 mins)

This part is fairly easy.
First question was on venn diagrams (credit card holder problem).
Its a bit lengthy but if u can manage it u get 4-5 questions right straight away.
then there are questions on direction, 4-5 questions on data sufficiency, 4-5 ques on replacing 0
and 1 by * & #, age problems etc
They r quite easy just remember the clock is ticking.

(iii) Attention to details (10 mins)

This section be careful...this section is very easy but be attentive to details, I would suggest do
this right after the verbal.
There will be 2-3 questions on similarity like
234222272451 23422272451 234222272451
find any dissimilarity.
then there will problem on relation- father, son like that
then replacing + by *, - by + and so on...
last question will be on case study.
they had given us a criteria list for admmission and few biodatas for considering whether their
applications will be accepted.

(iv) Technical (10 mins)

this portion will contain checking output, choosing correct answer etc.
It will be based on DBMS, C, unics commands and may few other topics...

Essay writing:
They will provide 15 mins after aptitude test for writing this passage. About 300 words. Now
don't think thats enough time, u hardly get any, trust me. Start writing the moment u get the
signal, but don't beat around the bush, be clear in expressing ur ideas and their justifications. Ur
aptitude marks most probably don't include essay marks. But they do pay importance to this.

128 were selected from 200-220 after aptitude test.

Next is the GD round, now we were never prepared for GD as we thought there won't be any
GD, but surprisingly we had and 94 were selected out of 128.
There were 12 in a group, and all the girls would be selected here, so boys u all have to open the
zip of ur mouths and talk. Don't sit Dumb. U lose points for that. Don't wait for too long for
others to finish.
They check ur communication skills and ur ideas. Just remember u have to talk.

If u get through this u will face Tech+hr interview and mostly they will be conducted by the
People who conducted ur GD.
Now, this is totally a matter of luck, in which panel u get...
If they ask u technical questions they are generally Not plain easy, so u have to be well prepared
in technical, which I was not.
As I had already got a job offer from Cognizant, I wasn't looking forward to any job in IBM. So I
hadn't taken any preparation at all.
But U guys don't do this, my interview was mainly on HR so it was easy, though they tried to
crack me with stress questions,
but they couldn't.
There were 2 men in my panel,
It was as follows:

me: good afternoon, sir.

sir: good afternoon take ur seat.
me: thank u, sir.
sir: i didn't get time to read ur essay, tell me about it in brief.
me: explained (they were satisfied)
sir: tell us something about urself
me: told (stress on ur extracurricular activities if u have good ones, now I was in news reading
and also some simple research work)
sir: u said u did researchwork, would like to do research in IBM?
me: right now I would like join, learn and grow with the industry and in future I might think
about switching to that. BLAH BLAH
sir: have u got any other job offer?
me: yes sir, from cognizant.
sir: why do u want to join IBM, cognizant is the fatest growing company now?
me: explained(<
Trust me always go through the press releases or news of the company u r sitting for, because if
u talk about those they really get impressed,
Just visit The Company's Home Site, U can get all details there>>)
sir: Ok, what is ur favourite subject?
me: Principles of programming language
sir: tell me diff b/w structure in C and C++?
me: told
sir: tell me a func where u don't have to define a body?
me: pure virtual func
sir: explain that.
me: (that was the only thing I couldn't recall)
sir: anyway, tell me about header files
me: BLAH BLAH
<>
sir: Ok, lets say I give u a job Not challenging, a job that class 12 boy can do, would u do it?
me: well a job is only as challenging as u make it, and i think there 's no harm in starting with a
class 12 job, I can surely work my way up.
sir: tell me a phase of ur life where u went through a big change.
me: from my school to college..BLAH BLAH
sir: are u mobile?
me: absolutely
sir: ok, lets say I send u to jungle rural place and tell u set up an IT workshop, what will the 3
most important challenges u will be facing?
me:<>
(i) requirement analysis: planning, gathering info on what is necessary to get the job done,
framework etc
(ii) man power= local technically ignorant people + technically experienced people -->
Managing them Together
(iii) handling unexpected events that r bound to occur in any large scale job
They were totally impressed with this answer.
sir: u have any question for me?
me: sir can u tell me about the training program in ur company?
sir: BLAH BLAH, any more questions?
me: yes sir, can u tell me more about 10 yr pact made b/w IBM and Idea cellular and Aditya
birla?
sir: BLAH BLAH, anymore?
me: no sir.
sir: thank u
me: thank u

Results came after an exhaustive wait till 8:30 pm. 66 were selected from 94.(Final Selection 66
from 200-220) Luckily my name was there.
Only thing u got to remember is that be confident at all times during ur interview, even if u have
said something wrong or couldn't answer
something don't lose ur confidence... atleast don't show that in ur attitude. Keep ur head cool,
body language calm and be confident and if u have good communication skills u will get
through. The interviewers are always friendly and smiling so u be the same way.

BEST OF LUCK. SEE U ALL IN IBM.

IBM PAPER ON 11th APRIL

Hello friends,
My name is Ajitesh Pathak, a 3rd year student of NIT Durgapur studying in the branch of
Information Technology. Like many before, I used to browse this website for company papers
and experiences of those who got placed and believe me it feels great while writing as one. On
11th April, IBM India had visited our campus and 72 got selected out of 340 aspirants. Thank
God, I was one of them.
Here are the details of the selection procedure.

There were 4 rounds…

1 . Written
2 . Essay round
3 . GD
4 . Tech + HR Interview

340 sat for the interview and 166 got selected. The cut off for every department was variable but
for the ECE, CSE and IT ppl it was very high. There were 55 ques and 47 was the cut-off. Yes,
believe me, tht’s the fact. 47 was the cutoff and for Non-IT depts. Like mechanical, EE, Meta,
Chem.. the cut off ranged from 35 to 40. Let me brief you about the written test.
There were 4 sections…
1st Verbal Section: 10 questions
2 ques on filling appropriate words..like
[1] The money was shared ______ the two.
(a) Among (b) Between (c) a & b (d) None
[2] _______ preparing for the exams, she had also prepared a presentation.
(a) Beside (b) Besides (c) a & b (d) None
1 ques on a synonym based sentence
[3] The phone number was incorporated into the directory.
(a) Exclude (b) Include (c) Condemned (d) None
Then the next 2 were on articles, very easy ones.

Then there was a RC… on embedded systems. Basically, read the 1st para, answer the 1st
ques… the ques were set according to the paras… very easy, try to do it in the end. Do the ones
you are comfortable with.

2nd Aptitude Section: 25 questions

Believe me this was a good section. There were easy ques but you had to be patient and not
excited. Try to keep your adrenaline flow under control….
Q on Venn Diagram…
There are 32 tables in a room. 9 tables have salt bottles on them. 1 table has salt and pepper only,
1 table has salt and sugar only and 1 table has pepper and sugar only.
3 tables have all of them. The difference between the tables containing pepper and sugar is 2.
Find the following..
[1] No. of tables containing sugar. [Ans: 17]
[2] No. of tables containing sugar only. [Ans: 12]
[3] No. of tables containing pepper. [Ans: 15]
[4] No. of tables containing pepper only [Ans: 10]
[5] No. of tables containing salt only. [Ans: 4]

Then there were few symbol based ques.. Like if + is /, / is -, - is * and * is + then evaluate..
there were 4 expressions..
There was a q on odd one out… there were 4 expressions and 3 of them evaluated to 36, the
answer was the one which didn’t evaluate to 36.
These comprised of ques [6],[7],[8],[9], [10]…
The next 5 were data sufficiency ones. Very easy… CAT aspirants would sail through this
portion.. Very easy ones…

The next five were general questions on aptitude…like

[16] If 5 cakes takes 1 hr 30 mins to bake in an oven when kept together, then how much will it
take 10 cakes to bake in an oven when kept together. [ Ans: Same time ]
[17] P and Q can write 135 pages in 27 hrs. P can write 3 pages in 1 hour. How much time will it
take Q to write 42 pages. [ Ans: 21]
[18] A beats B in a 100 race by 10m . B beats C in the same race by 10m. Then by how much
does A beat C in the same race. [Ans: 20m]
[19] A class took an exam and each scored either 80 or 100 marks. If 10 students gave the exam
and 100 was the max score one could get, then find out how many got 100 marks if the average
of the class was 94. [Ans : 7]
The last one I don’t exactly remember but that was very easy. Anyone could do it.
The next, the final 5 of this section was a concentrative portion.
If $ represents 1 and * represents 0, then find the following in this code…
There were 5 expressions. One had to find the value of each of the expression and then convert it
to binary form and then encode it according to the 1st line. This was a little cautious portion, but
keep your cool and don’t make a mistake in finding the binary.

One thing, normally IBM gives q’s on cubes but there were none in our paper. So future
aspirants should be knowing how to do the sums of cubes. Just think upon it with a group of
frnds and then it wil be fine. Also know the octal, hexadecimal systems and how to find the
equivalents of numbers with decimals, like 0.4375

3rd Attention to Detail Section: 10 ques

This was the easiest section. Some patterns were given and you had tell wich patterns were same
according to the options. So be calm and keep your eyes open. There were some symbol based
questions also. There were 5 questions which were based on a small passage.
It was a passage about a club with some membership criteria to be fulfilled. Don’t read it. Start
with the questions and relate the options with a criteria because it was a section named Attention
to Detail not Reading Comprehension. So work with the options. This is where maximum
students lost the time when they started reading the criteria. Play with the options.

4th Technical Section: 10 ques

This was a tough section especially for the Non IT branches.
4 ques on C/C++, 3 on DBMS, 3 on Unix.

Just brush up your C concepts ans do some intelligent guess work. But the crux lies that you are
expected to have all the 1st 3 sections right if want to guarantee a place.

When I went to the Interview Room, the interviewer told me that I only made 3 mistakes in the
Technical Section, the rest all were right… ie, my score was 52 out of 55… So try to have a very
high score in written.

Before the Interview there was the Essay round of 15 mins and GD.
Essay was a general topic… Primary Education is more important than Higher Studies…

There was a GD round and the GD round carried a lot of marks. There were no eliminations after
the GD round but it carried a lot of marks in the final score.

When I entered the interview room, it appeared that I was already selected before it. I had a 5
mins interview session. All was HR, they were asking as if it was a formality. They told me
about my written test which I mentioned earlier and also my GD and essay, which was very gud
as they said. They didn’t see my file neither my CV. They asked me general ques about family
background, place of birth, and about extra-currics. Try to mention things which will shift the
interview towards your way. Like they asked me whether I had written any complex programs in
C or C++. I said that yes I had written few like the 15 puzzle program, Tic-Tac-Toe, Spiral and I
purposely mentioned that I didn’t use any A.I. or some high concept but applied my basic
knowledge about C like arrays, pointers… From here he asked me what is an array and a vector,
Diff between Call by value and Call by reference, diff. between return() and exit() .. that’t it…
Then they commented on my high C.G.P.A. and asked me my standing in the department. Time
was smoothly moving and all my answers were spontaneous. Finally they asked me why a
manhole is round. I answered it almost. They shook my hand with an assured face tht I was
selected and said: It was very nice meeting you, Ajitesh. The interview was over even before I
could realize.
The results were out after 2 hours and 72 were selected…. My name was announced and
everything went happily thereafter.

Other panels also asked many on IBM info…

CEO and Chairman ::: Samuel J. Palmisano Headquarters ::: Newyork (Main)
IBM India President::: Shankar Annaswamy Bangalore(India)
IBM India VC ::: Rajesh Nambiar and Amitava Ray..
Visit the IBM site for further details… and one for those who have spectacles…
I have one but I wasn’t asked this one. Other panels had asked what kind of lens does the specs
have and draw the ray diagram showing the defect and the effect after the lens. So be confident
and try to score high in written, essay and GD… interview will shorten automatically… Ppl with
higher C.G.P.A. have great chance in IBM… Good Luck

1) Written Apti Test
2) Technical Interview cum HR Interview

1. Written Apti Test (Meritrac): 55 questions to be answered within one Hour & an essay to be
written within 15 mins.(essay topic is given at last 5 minutes.ours was “engineers should not
accept jobs outside the country.”(Write in legible, good, No!!! in best handwriting as it is seen at
the time of interview. They may ask u questions on that also as I mentioned @ Swadesh movie I
was asked @ that.))

Section 1:English aptitude

1. I had seen the boy throwing stones …..the old lady. (use towards/on/to/at)
2. Synonyms lady was so seluete ,so everyone was praising her . ans : flexible
3. Use a an the example was easy.
4. Use a an the example was easy.
5. Preposition again. Easy
Then the long passage and on that 5 qs. leave it .Do at last as u will have much amount of time.

Section 2: Quantitative aptitude(go with examples like bouquet of 200 roses 5 red 2 yellow ,5
red &green like that plz as 5 qs on that I was unable to ans them.)
Section 3: Analytical ability
Is given statement answerable by a:1 b:1,2 c:by both and d: by neither.choose correct option
among a,b,c,d. Like plz do as u can win ur match here 5 qs on that.
Easy and must solve first like *replaced by +,/ by *,+ by * and – by / so evaluate 28/4*2/1-3+5

Section 4: Computer section

qs from Unix(some commands given what will be the output?) & for technical DBMS(tables
given & ans regarding keys ),what is Normalization? ,sorting complexities worst case which will
perform best? Etc.

For quantitative aptitude & analytical ability I will suggest to solve RS AGGARWAL (both)
specially Venn dia, mathematical operations, puzzle test, data sufficiency, binary conversion,
direction test(south north east do sense : In south turn towards right is towards east do it cool
ly. ),time distance speed, profit loss, percentage problems.

Age problem like veena younger than 3 years seema who is 4 ys lder than reshma….finally who
is older amongst all like 3 qs?

Sorry guys I cant provide u the details of written paper as I was then busy in solving them. But
truly speaking it was easiest test I had given ever.Ya Believe me I am also avg case student like u
all as my overall % up to 5th sem are 65.36.Ya now u can believe me.

Initially on the ans sheet of essay they have mentioned that they are going to conduct GD of
short listed candidates but at last they haven’t , But remember guys they have just started the
GD tradition in on campus interview processes.

2) Technical Interview cum Personal Interview

I would like to express my interview experience as I think it maybe useful to them who have the
same dream to be an IBM’er just I had.

I:may I come in sir? He:no (amazed !!!!) then come in yaar.(so friendly)

He:have a seat plz .tell me @ u and then @ project.(answered well …like the river. Plz in project
explanation draw some figures tables for the sake of his understanding he is just
checking ur communication. Skills. (If u r convent student plz drop this instruction)
(I am now going to provide u best of all idea to improve the English. first buy CHAOS
dictionary of Marathi to English I m not selling or advertising anything(for the sake of my
security) just mentioning the thing which I had done so now take the Marathi news paper or any
book u like most and daily u have to translate the 10 lines of Marathi to English. Don’t think
about the tenses. Just go on improving urvocabulary. My experience tells that within 5 days u
will have confidence in doing all things .Hoping that u will do it sincerely.) )

Then a complicated pgm given to solve i tried it ,don’t give up so early at least try something
who knows ur luck supports u at that time and u will be able to solve it.

Asked @ family.

Why should IBM hire u?

Ans: Because of my abilities like creativeness and innovativeness, learnabilty, flexiblity,

…….xplain with eg.

How many files created after successful execution of pgm?

Good!!!!! Strengths ?

Like river I answered (he got impressed)

Ibm: why we use main? Why not multiple mains? If main is not declared what will happen?
Me: compiler will raise an error message.
Ibm: what kind of error message?
Me: I don’t know exactly but I think it will say main function not defined/found.

Then he open up with real weapons and given me 10 problems list to solve within time limit of 5
minutes. Was easy but tricky I solved luckily just to give o/p of pgm (test ur c skills helped
here).

IBM: Favorite sub?

I: All. (Impressed but plz give such ans if u r perfect .I was, as I have prepared IBM as my dream
company.)

He asked me no. of qs on networking, o.s. Dbms(novice level ),c,c++,java , vc++ all things
explained by me so impressed. Uptil now spent 25 min

Then turned towards personal interview asked all general qs @ relocation, preferred place, etc.

Then I asked his good name. He: Mr. Pravin .

He wished me to meet again. Given clue of selection.

So plz be prepare for the test and interview and to be a part of worlds no-2 brand and s/w no 1
branded company.i m always with u. see u all in IBM .

IBM PAPER ON 26th JUNE AT PUNE

Hi all…
IBM… International Business Machines also known as Big Blue conducted campus at MIT on
26th June, 2007. Students were from PVG, SKNCOE, SCOE and MIT.

Criterion was aggregate 60% (For 5 semesters). Nearly 95 students got short listed from the
aptitude test. Further 72 cleared the Group Discussion and finally 59 got through. I was one of
them.

1. Aptitude Test: It was very interesting.

It had 3 sections:
· Matrix Manipulation: Three 5*5 matrices were given and there were 5 Qs on each matrix such
as interchanging rows and columns, replacing one symbol by other, etc. (15 Qs in 13 min) there
was no –ve marking for this section, so, I attempted all Qs.
· Series completion: 20 Qs to be solved in 4 min. It had -1/4 marking. So, I attempted only 18.
· Quantitative: 12 Qs in 17 min. It had -1/4 marking. I attempted only 7 Qs.
This section was a bit tough.

2. Group discussion:
Topic for our group was ‘Should Politicians be Honest?’
We were a group of 16 students.
It was an extempore. Each one had to stand up and present his/her views.

3. Interview (At around 10 pm)

Interviewer: Vijay
(Last Interview of the day!!)

Vijay: Finally…
Leena: Yeh…Good Evening, Sir.
Vijay: So, what do you feel about being the last one to be interviewed?
Leena: I got to know the questions that you asked to all my friends…
Vijay: Oh, really?? What did they tell you??
Leena: They told me that you asked
1. Tell me something about yourself?
2. Why IBM?

Vijay: That’s it??

Leena: Yeh.
Vijay: (smiling) These are just to start the interview..!! (I just smiled.)
Vijay: Tell me some things which you don’t like about your college…
Leena: Sir, our college conducts re-tests if we have not cleared the regular unit test, and they
send the reports back home.
Vijay: They really do that??
Leena: Ya, they do.
Vijay: Have you ever given the re-test?
Leena: Yes sir, 2-3 times. Because we were busy in Firodiya Karandak practice…
Vijay: (Interrupting me…) Have you done Firodiya??
Leena: Yes sir.
Vijay: As what?
Leena: As a Singer. I sung a Telugu song in S.E. and a Portuguese Song in T.E.
Vijay: Do you know something?? I am a musician… I have all instruments at my home. I have a
reserved floor for music in my bunglow. IBM has it’s own band and we perform all over the
world. I am the president of IBM club.
(He was going through my resume.)
Vijay: So, should I grill you on c++ or java??
Leena: Yes Sir, you can.
Vijay: (smiled) Should I??
Leena: You can, sir.
Vijay: Anyways, you are watching me since morning, what do you think about me??
Leena: (Thought for a while) Sir, you are pretty honest and can go naughty at times.. and I think
you don’t really prefer job hopping. Do you play
guitar??

Vijay: I play all instruments…

Vijay: Do you know, IBM takes special care of it’s women employees?? IBM has won the Best
Employer award for 10-15 years…
(I just nodded.)
Vijay: Ok…tell me something about yourself…
Leena: I am from Bombay ..
(He immediately stopped me)
Vijay: Bombay or Mumbai??
Leena: Mumbai…Are you from Mumbai?
Vijay: No, But its like my second home. Why did you think that I am from Mumbai??
Leena: A person who is so particular about saying Mumbai and not Bombay must be closely
related with the city…
(He just smiled)
Vijay: Continue…
Leena: I love computers. I never get bored of them. It can be gaming or surfing..
Vijay: (Interrupting me…) So, which was the last site you surfed?
Leena: It was IBM.
Vijay: What did you like about it?
Leena: Sir, I loved the latest logo in which ‘I’ is shown by vertically drawn eye and ‘B’ is
represented by a honeybee.
Vijay: It is not really a logo…
Leena: Ya, not exactly… but that particular picture…
Vijay: Ok. What is IBM’s slogan?
Leena: What makes you special!!!
(He nodded in appreciation.)
Leena: Sir, actually I didn’t know this but my mother messaged me after I told her that I have
cleared the G.D and have to go for the interview.
(He smiled.)
Vijay: So, do you want to ask anything?
Leena: Sir, when did you join IBM?
Vijay: I am with IBM since last 4 years. Before that I was working with a Japanese company.
Leena: Sir, and what about the training?
Vijay: Training will be for 3-6 months depending upon the project requirements.
Anything else you want to ask?
Leena: No sir.
Vijay: Sure?
Leena: Yes sir.
Vijay: (Smiling) Ok…So, now you will tell your mother immediately about the interview??
Leena: (Smiling) Yes sir.
Vijay: Do you think I will select you?
Leena: Yes sir.
Vijay: Are you sure?
Leena: 100% sir.
Vijay: confident?
Leena: Absolutely Sir…
Vijay: (Smiling) Anyways, it was nice interacting with you..
Leena: Thank you, sir.
Vijay: Wait for the results now…
Leena: Yes sir. Bye.
Vijay: Bye.

Finally, around 10: 50 pm results were declared and Expression Of Responsibility was given to
us!!!!

I wish you all the very best… c u in IBM…

IBM PAPER ON 13th DECEMBER 2007

Hi friendzzz,

Hope you all are busy wid the ongoing placements. To start with, let me introduce myself . I am
Neelesh Bhattacharya, an M.S student from IIT Kharagpur. IBM visited our campus on 13th Dec
and we were all quite nervous, as usual.

To begin, they announced that the selection procedure will consist of three rounds,
namely, written, GD and interview. Then the story began.

The Written Test comprised of FOUR sections :

(a) Data Matrix : Series of questions were based on a single data matrix. The elements of the
matrix were symbols like *, @, ? and also numbers like 1, 6, 7...The questions were like "If all ?
are changed into 1, which row summation has the highest value". They will just test your
swiftness and response to the querry.

(b) Find the missing number : All u have 2 do is 2 fing out the pattern in the given sequence and
find out the missing number, quite easy but u should b fast coz 18 or 19 ques were 2 b solved in
4 min.

(c) Aptitude : General Aptitude...Problems on trains, age, percentage...etc...The R.S Aggarwal

book should be enough 4 this part.

(d) Essay Writing : You have 2 write some 100 words on the given topic...Our topic was
"Cricket is overshadowing other games in India". Try to be as pin-pointed as possible.

123 were short-listed for the GD round and the students were divided in groups of 8-10 each.

It was a very very nervy situation as two of the IBM people entered the room 2 start the
proceedings. We were made 2 sit in a round table manner. They announced that the for the 1st
part of it, everyone will speak about the topic 4 a min (sequentially) and in the next part there
will be an open forum for 4 mins and finally 1 min for anybody or everybody to conclude. The
topic given was "Should India sign the Nuclear Treaty"...In the open forum section, try 2 take the
initiative before anybody does it, this shows the leadership quality in you. But avoid making a
Fish-Market situation. Same is the case for the concluding section.

63 were short-listed from here and again I was one of the lucky ones.

Fasten you seatbelts now, as we have come to the Interview Round.

I was interviewed by two persons, both young and quite friendly. "Introduce yourself", "Why
IBM".. were some of the common questions. Coming to the Technical part, I was asked to
describe the area of my Research in details and also it's application in a practical scenario. It was
followed by series of questions on Software Engineering, like SW life cycle phases, testing
methods, ISO/SI CMM...etc. Finally a few puzzles on probability and general intelligence. It was
quite okay and I was confident abt the selection.
At 12 in the night the results came out & 32 were selected & I was one of them. Hopefully this
info will help u in ur placements.

All the Best.

IBM PAPER ON 18TH JUNE AT NIT,KURUKSHETRA

The written test consists of three sections of

Section 1: 14 min for matrices type problem consisting two problems.
Section 2: 4 min for number series and it consist of 20 simple series. Be calm to do these series
bcoz it has 1/4 -ve marking.
Section 3: 20 min for analytical problems and 20 problems r there mostly the most difficult prob
of R.S Agarwal. Be conscious in this also bcoz this section also ve 1/4 -ve marking.

They declared the result within one hour. after the shortlisting of the qualified student of written
they call us for GD. Among 300 students only 30 student ve qualify the written. They make 2
groups of GD.
The topic was:
1. Is money brings irresponsibility.
2. Shud indian engg go abroad for higher salary. They select only 14 of us for interview.

In GD u should be very much confident. After lunch break they call us for interviews. There are
two rounds of interviews, viz., the technical and the HR round.
Technical and Personal Round for Software Candidates Mainly subjective questions in C,
Operating Systems, DBMS, Data Structures are asked interspersed with some on the candidate's
personal background. .
Typical questions in C and Data Structures
1. WAP to interchange
2 variables without using the third one 2. Explain quick sort and merge sort algorithms amn
derive the time-constraint relation for these.
3. Explain binary searching, fibonacci search
4. General questions on binary trees, transversals
5. General questions on graphs and their representation.

Typical Questions on Operating Systems

1. Demand paging, page faults, replacement algos, thrashing, etc
2. Paged segmentation and segment paging
This is very much competitive if u r a computer student. But i was a M.Tech student so i directly
told them that i don't have knowledge of softwares, C all that. I will cope up in your training
program. It is very much necessary that your communication should be as good as possible. after
that they qualify only 6 in technical and i was one of them. In HR they simply ask about
yourself. it is just the formality but they make 2 out among us 6. and finally they select only 4.
And i am one of them . Friend it is very true that one day will made for each one. i m not able to
qualify the interview of WIPRO, and many others. but i qualify here one of topmost company of
the world. Its all bcoz of God grace.

ALL the very best for your future and hope for meeting in IBM.
