The subject of gender and homosexuality has always been a touchy subject, even more so in a
Catholic and patriarchal country like ours. Different types of discrimination are being felt by different types of
genders. A lot of people still think that you can only be male or female and identifying as something else is
just absurd and unacceptable. Even though the LGBT Community has garnered an outstanding amount of
support from many, some people merely tolerate those who identify outside the male or female gender.
People are still ignorant when it comes to certain matters about the LGBT and this leads to dissonance
amongst the people.
It is important that we see past the gender norms that are imposed to us by society. Stay-at-home
moms and working-dads are not facts but only a stereotype made by social construct. People should not be
contained within descriptions of their gender. We should all be free to do whatever we want as long as we
don’t step on the rights of others. Why should someone live a harder or easier life just because they’re of a
certain gender? Contrary to popular belief, people can’t actually control what they feel or who they are
sexually attracted to. It shouldn’t be too hard to respect the choice that other people make for their lives. In
the end, love is still love;no matter the gender. We should all be aware of this fact and stop judging other
people on something that they cannot control.
I truly admire those who stand up against gender discrimination and gender bias, while still keeping a
clear and open mind. Some people would just lash out uncontrollably even at the smallest mistake a person
makes when on the subject of gender. Other would just start to lose focus on what they’re truly fighting
about and start to scream ‘superiority’ instead of ‘equality’. They would blindly hate on the gender that they
think are opposing them. These types of people are the ones who tarnish the reputation of those who are
truly fighting for good in a respectable manner. How can you solve hate by being hateful yourself? We
should not stoop down to the level of those who oppress and discriminate us. Practicing gender sensitivity is
key to a better and more effective nation building. The moment we recognize and respect people regardless
of their gender is the moment that we will truly be a great nation.
