The Dred Scott Case

Briefly describe the person or event


An african American slave. He tried to prove that he was free because he lived on
free land, although his owner claimed otherwise. Going to court, he was considered
a slave due to the third and sixth amendment.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


Dred Scott was able to benefit the system of slavery, because it gave the court
that he was tried at, a reason for every slave on anti-slavery land reason as to
how they considered it to be unconstitutional for a slave to be a citizen of the
United States.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


This event worked against slavery, not only because it inspired them but also
considered their opinions. This was one of the first cases of a slave trying to be
proven as anything but a slave.

John Brown Raid


Briefly describe the person or event
On October 16, 1859, a army of 18 men invaded a town named Harper’s Ferry,
Virginia. This army of 18 men were consisted of slaves, and they strived to lead an
armed rebellion. An abolitionist, John Brown, led this army and raided a federal
arsenal, stealing weapons to assist his slave ary. His goal was to travel throughout
the Appalachian Mountains, and gain more slaves along the way. However, his plan
failed, and John Brown was tried for treason and hung to death along with all of
his other army members.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


By leading a rebellion, John Brown supported anti--slavery, which the North also
supported. This gave leverage to the North to debate with the South, and the ‘split’
between the two sides grew larger. The end to this event was celebratory for
the South, and since the North mourned the death of John Brown, the two sides
grew to opposite ends.
How did this person or event work against slavery?
The South were horrified with John Brown’s work against slavery. They became
further shocked when the North mourned his death. Due to this event, there
became much tension between the two sides.

South’s View of Northern Factory Workers


Briefly describe the person or event
Momentarily after the end of the Revolutionary War, the United States entered an
era known as the Industrial Revolution. There was large amounts of increase in the
use of tools and technology to produce products that were used. Thousands of
people, even children, worked hard for low pay. However, the factory workers in
the North proposed that if four million Southern slaves were freed, they would
move to the North to become citizens on free land, but they would take away jobs
by agreeing to low-pay labor.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


The people in the South were greedy for money to contest in financial challenges
against the North. The South saw how the factory workers were paid, and they
wanted more money for themselves, resulting in the South keeping the slaves for
free labor.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


This event worked against slavery, because many of the Southern slaves were
envious of the Northern factory workers, because they were doing equally the
same amount of work, if not more, but the North factory workers were getting
paid. The slaves compared their status to the Northern factory workers, and
realized how bad the conditions of their lives were, and wanted freedom.

North’s View on Slavery


Briefly describe the person or event
During the industrial revolution, the North side was very advanced in its industries.
They had more money than the South side, which was a main concern of the
South. Although, the North believed that it slavery is wrong that that a person is as
equal as the person next to him or her. However, they believed that the whites
were more superior than the blacks due to their larger sum of money.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


Although the North believed that slavery was cruel, they did not do much about it,
because they benefited from the slaves. The slaves were a main part to the
Industrial revolution, because they picked cotton which was crucial for the
industries to strive on. The North essentially relied on the slaves, so they helped
benefit the system and strive to keep the slave system.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


The North worked eventually worked against slavery, and stood up for their
beliefs and announced why it was wrong. However, the South disagreed with the
North, and this conflict eventually led to the Civil War.

William Lloyd Garrison


Briefly describe the person or event
WIlliam Lloyd Garrison wrote a paper titled The Liberator in 1831. He wrote in depth
about his strong beliefs towards how cruel slavery was, and how everybody in the
United States, deserves to be equal regardless of being white or black. They all
should have the same privileges and rights to strive for success in the country.
However, through writing this paper, we was disliked by many Southerners and
Northerners, and his point of view was not taken into account by many people.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


He benefited the system of slavery, because he bought the idea of slavery into
effect. By producing an idea that not many people were comfortable with,
especially in the North and the south, his efforts led to outrage by those who
supported enslavement.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


William almost dedicated his entire life to anti-slavery. He published an issue of his
paper every month and helped found the American Anti-Slavery Society. He
worked against slavery with everything in his power, and expanded his knowledge to
bring an end to this cruel system.

Frederick Douglass
Briefly describe the person or event
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County around 1818. He was an
eminent humans rights leader especially in the anti-slavery movement and the first
African American citizen to gain a high U.S government rank.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


He was able to bring issues of slavery into attention to people in the 1840’s, 50’s,
and 60’s. He was such an incredibly talented literary man, that epople could not
believe that he was a slave.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


He worked hard against slavery by talking and persuading other abolitionists and
writers that slavery was wrong. By doing so, he had writing in the newspaper to
spread awareness and issues about slavery.

Harriet Tubman
Briefly describe the person or event
Harriet Tubman was an African American woman born into slavery, working in
enslavement for 19 years of her life. However, after this period of time, she was
freed. After her release, she began helping slaves escape to freedom. Statistically,
she helped free over 300 slaves in her lifetime, as well as the conductor of the
Underground railroad, which was a system to help slaves escape.

How did this person or event benefit the system of slavery?


Harriet Tubman freed over 300 slaves, escaping through the underground railroad
that she conducted. However, a law was passed that escaped slaves were to be
returned to their rightful owners. The Fugitive Slave Law was passed, and even
one slaves went far enough North to be freed, they got transfered back to their
owners. This made the system of the Undergroudn Railroad difficult to maintian.

How did this person or event work against slavery?


Harriet Tubman was a ‘conductor’ of the Underground Railroad. Essentially, she
was an ultimate leader to help bring slaves to freedom. This process helped work
against slavery and deplete the amount of enslavement in the United States.
