3rd Grade European Lesson

A. Standards-

Bryan

Lesson Objectives: Multicultural

·​ Students will be able to: Develop the knowledge, skills and attitude to function in a diverse

society.

·​ Students will be able to: work effectively with other students, in the classroom and on the

field.

·​ S​ tudents will be able to build social and action skills​.

Lesson Objectives: Common Core Standards

·​ ​ ​Motor/ Movement​: ​Students will be able to demonstrate the appropriate skills for dribbling and

passing a soccer ball.

·​ ​ ​Physical Fitness:​ ​Students will be able to participate in exercises and in the physical activities

set up on the field.

Lesson Objectives: Learning Styles

·​ ​ ​Linguistic:​ ​Students will be able to identify important dates and origins of football (soccer),

while watching a video about “The history of football (soccer)

·​ Logical:​ ​Students will be able to identify the European continent from a world map handed

out to them and they will be able to identify two major “football” playing countries in Europe.

·​ Visual/Spatial:​ ​Students will be able to follow outside activities set up with cones. They will

demonstrate the ability to dribble and pass a soccer ball to and thru the cones.

● Visual Spatial: students will be able to visually see the numbers and colors to connect to

the proper vocabulary word.

Serenity:

● 1. Content Standard:

○ Criticism by identifying, classifying, and comparing characteristics of the art

elements as they share, interpret, and evaluate their own artwork and the artwork

of others. • Aesthetics by describing and ranking images, moods, and

functions in works of art for realism, expressionism, and functionalism.

○ History by identifying and discussing the materials, processes, purposes, and

functions of specific styles of artworks.

○ Production by creating works of art with a variety of lines, shapes, colors,

textures, forms, and space to create pattern, balance, value, movement, and

contrast through drawing, painting, clay, printmaking, 2-D and 3-D, weaving, and

digital and mixed media.

i. Students will be able to complete a mosaic according to the rubric standards

with at least 80% accuracy.

● 2. Multicultural Content Standard: Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and

cultures

Auditory:​ Listening to the Italian language and the musical video that goes along with that
Visual​:​ All the visual aids use as well as seeing the mosaics and other art.

Kinesthetic​:​ Physically making a mosaic, if it were the real lesson the kinesthetic would have

also been in playing sports.

B. Materials-

● Powerpoint

● Mona Lisa coloring sheets

● glue

● variety of construction paper colors

● container to hold the cut up pieces of paper

● video

C. Instruction-

Bryan will discuss sports of Europe, then Jennifer will discuss how she would teach

Italian to the third grade students. Finally, Serenity will present the topic of Rome, discuss how

art can tell stories, discuss the importance of art before books were created, learn techniques used

to create mosaics, and create our own work of art that represents them.

D. Instruction Procedures:

Students will be presented information about Europe through pictures, a powerpoint, and other

visuals. They will be given examples of the tools used and review how to use them. Then they

will complete a mosaic that represents them.

Jennifer goes second:

T: Explains that the time is 60 minutes,Type of Lesson: Basics of learning the Italian Language,

Grade Level: 3rd, and the Space Needed: Classroom.

Materials used are; Handouts given by teacher, Crayons, Pencils, Worksheets given by teacher,

Overhead to watch Youtube video’s and to use with handout and worksheets, and Classroom

items and fixtures

Then explains:

Lesson Plan: Learn Numbers in Italian 1-10 (30 minute activity)

● Students will get a handout of the numbers from 1-10 in English, Italian, and how they

should be pronounced.

● Students will work in a group to learn the words by working together.

● Teacher will read handout and have students repeat after the number is said.

● Teacher will first call on students to have them pronounce the numbers in Italian.

● Teacher will then speak the numbers in Italian and have individual students try to find the

correct number in the classroom somewhere. (Could be on the calendar, or something on

the board).

● Teacher will pass out a worksheet where students will match a number to the correct

word associated with that number. (This is a graded activity)


Lastly explains

Lesson Plan: Learn Basic Colors in Italian: (30 minute activity)

● Students will receive Vocabulary handout with all of the basic colors in English and

Italian

● Students will work in a group to learn the words by working together.

● Teacher will read aloud the handout and have the students repeat the color after it is said.

● Students will call on individual students and ask them what their favorite color is and say

it in Italian.

● After saying the color in Italian students will have the chance to find the color in the

classroom

● Students will also have a worksheet that needs to be colored with crayons to match the

color to the correct Italian word. (This is a graded assignment)

Serenity goes third:

T: Show students the introduction power point about Rome (vocabulary) and talk about starting a

discussion about what art used to be used for (to tell stories before books could be mass printed.)

S: Respond to discussion

T: Makes example on the board by starting a story but only using the pictures, and asking

students for input.

S; Respond by giving the teacher elements to the story


T: Illustrates on the board, show them a slide of the vocab review and evaluation sheet then

explain that they will be making a mosaic

S: Have Jennifer and Bryan pass out Mona Lisa coloring pages, glue, and cut up pieces of paper

T: Tell the students to glue the pieces to the paper in order to color in the Mona Lisa

S: Begin to glue paper

T: Show them examples of some Mona Lisa Mosaics

S: Finish Mosaics

E. Closure

Display a few examples of the students mosaics and discuss their uniqueness, quality, and how it

represents them.
